Where was the right-side of our defence for CU's first goal?
at 19:17 16 Oct 2021

Not the first time Janoi has drifted to the centre of the pitch- that's ok if the players in front of him run back to cover the space he leaves but far too often the right side of our defence is empty. i don't know what's going wrong but we've conceded a few goals on our right-side.

Where was the right-side of our defence for CU's first goal?
at 19:08 16 Oct 2021

"Highlights" from game here:-

https://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/competitions/league-one/12

Their first goal turned the game. I know that Burgess got done to get CU breaking forward. But from that point it looked like:-

a) They, as a team, were running forward with more determination than we were to defend.
b) Our defenders were drawn to the ball and not looking for runners or holding shape
c) Their scorer was left totally free in acres of space on our right-hand side.

It looks as though we went 2-0 and stopped concentrating and running hard for those vital few minutes before halftime - really disappointing as we had played so well and battled so hard for 40 minutes. I hope that's another lesson learned.

Lessons learned so far this season (I hope)

1. You have to earn the right to play
2. When you're winning, the whole team must keep running and concentrating.

We allowed Accrington (AS) to bully us
at 17:43 2 Oct 2021

When we were brave on the ball, we were the better team. Accrington pressed, we lost possession a couple of times and we stopped playing football. Too many of our players seem fragile in possession and resort to long balls or back passes and this plays right into the hands of aggressive teams such as AS and just invites more pressure. Only Morsi, Burns, Burns and Fraser had the confidence to be brave with the ball. I know Evans got a hat-trick on Tuesday but as soon as Carroll if fit, he needs to play alongside Morsi.

We need to play through midfield
at 14:51 26 Sep 2021

In the first half our centre-halves didn't pass to Carroll or Mizouni (despite Miz often making space and demanding the ball) and we struggled. At the start of the second half, it was noticeable that Carroll dropped back and the centre-halves used him, as a result Carroll used his passing skills to seize control of the midfield and we looked a different team. Understandably we went more direct in the latter stages but the turning point that saw us take control was making more use of Carroll and Miz.

I hope that Cook plays Morsi (no reflection on Miz who was brave on the ball and looks one for the future) and Carroll on Tuesday and insists that our centre-halves (who seem to be good defenders but have a limited range of passing) pass to that experienced midfield pairing.

Arrrgh. Who's injured now?

If Cook has any sense it'll be Evans with a 'groin strain'.

Next 4 games
at 11:42 24 Sep 2021

Three of the next 4 games are at home and we also face Accrington Stanley away. If we win those games we'll have 18 points from 11 games played. This would put us very close to the top 6 and out troubled start would be a distant memory.

We will turn it around
at 12:51 18 Aug 2021

We have one of the best squads in the league. At the moment there are two challenges.

Firstly, there has been a lot of publicity about all the players we've bought and we're seen as a big scalp, this gives our opponents a boost and they play with a commitment and togetherness that we, as a totally new group of players, have failed to match.

Secondly, the players haven't developed the confidence and self-belief to dominate teams. In last night's game this was clear in the way we responded to taking the lead, instead of driving home the advantage, we took our foot of the gas, content to retain possession but not to urgently push for a second goal (Bonne's miss excepted). This allowed the opposition to gain a foothold and when they equalised and instead of responding with aggression we withdrew and seemed content to settle for a draw.

One or two good wins will give the team the confidence, self-belief , resilience and togetherness to shoot up to the top of the league and stay there.

Lack of fitness is a big part of the problem
at 16:56 17 Apr 2021

Cook has mentioned it. Gary Roberts has mentioned it. It's probably why we can only play well for half a match (apparently we were excellent for the first 20 minutes today). It's probably why we have had so many injuries. What I find difficult to understand is how everybody at the club (owner, directors, manager, coaches AND players) allowed lack of fitness to become a problem. Surely the ability to run hard for a whole match 2 or 3 times per week should be a fundamental, an absolute basic.

It does explain a lot, if a player feels he cannot last a whole match it will impact his confidence and lead him to hide and to take 'breathers'. A team of players that are at peak fitness and have a little talent will always be confident of giving any team a match.

Now that Cook and Roberts have identified fitness as an issue, I'm not sure what can be done this season but it does mean the whole squad should be on notice to keep themselves fit over the summer break and to expect the most demanding pre-season training they've ever experienced.

Because we could have kept them- they were on our books. Not sure we could have retained any of the excellent loan players we've had recently.

Best XI from current and ex-Ipswich players still playing
at 21:29 5 Dec 2019

Prompted by Adam Webster scoring this evening, here's my stab at best XI if allowed to select current and ex-Ipswich players (not loanees) still playing. A "what we could have had" team:-

Nick Pope (Burnley)

Vincent-Young (ITFC)---Mings-(AV)---Webster (BHA)---Cresswell (WHU)

Hourihane (AV)---Skuse (ITFC)---Flynn Downes (ITFC)

McGoldrick (SHU)---Keiffer Moore (Wigan)----Waghorn (Derby)

Seems a bit light in midfield. I must have missed out one or two. Not sure whether Jack Marriott should be ahead of Keiffer Moore- Moore gets the nod cos he's scored a couple for Wales.

Defensively this team is Premier League- overall it could be Championship play-off standard. What would be your XI?

More worried about Adomah than Grealish

Apparently this is the Uncle Albert chant:-

"You play him on the left, you play him on the right, he makes defences look f****** s***e.

"Because when he has the ball, you hear the Holte End roar, why does Uncle Albert always score?

"Albert Adomah, la la la la la, Albert Adomah...."
