Loan Signings and Season Preview
Written by itfccymru on Saturday, 1st Sep 2012 23:37

I have to say, I was disappointed with Damien Delaney's departure without having brought in a replacement. Fair enough Town letting him leave on a free, with him not getting a lot of games and was never the most reliable of defenders, but having just Tommy Smith and Luke Chambers as our two most established centre-backs, I think is a schoolboy error from Paul Jewell.

Yes, the loan market is still open but it is far from ideal. I saw us linked again with Sean St Ledger, which would be a great signing if we could do it, but judging that he was in the Leicester starting line-up today, surely that means he is part of their plans?

I think we need at least two centre-backs in because if Chambers or Smith do get injured, we look very thin indeed, I know Guirane N'Daw can play at centre-half, but that's not his preferred position.

I've just seen that Barry Fry has said he would do a George Boyd loan deal with a view to a move. Boyd would be an outstanding signing, adds a bit of class in midfield and can play many positions. We need another creative midfielder so we're not always relying on Lee Martin and will also add a little competition for him, which is always healthy.

Which brings me on to Paul Taylor, and what a little gem Jewell could have found here. Already a fans' favourite and I really think he could be a real coup. With his energy and determination, I am sure he can be a massive player at Town and can score a lot of goals while he's at it. Also great to see Jewell play 4-4-2 today, with Murph and Martin on either side, I'm sure they can cause real problems.

Season Preview

I think as a fan you HAVE to be positive and optimistic otherwise if us as the heart and soul of the football club aren't, we have no chance! I fully understand we have been more then patient over the past three years, but you have to give Jewell credit in the way he has realised his mistakes and is now trying to build a young hungry team who will do anything to wear the shirt of Ipswich Town, which is what we want as fans.

We have to realise that as much as we'd love it, it is very much long-term and will not happen overnight, remember, good things come to those who wait! Sir Alex Ferguson, possibly the greatest manager of all time, took four years to win his first trophy at Manchester United.

We need patience and I'm sure Jewell can do the job because he's done it before. With two centre-backs, another midfielder and one more signing maybe to just beef the team up, there is no way why we can't compete at the top of the league this year.

But we do need to address issues in the team, killing opposition teams off for example which has cost us dear over the past season and learn to see the game out without conceding silly goals that are avoidable.

However, I'm sure all of this will come! We need to support what Jewell is trying to build and give him our 100% backing, which will only help! COYB!!! <3

All good points well made, but I don't really see your argument. Is the answer to get more loanees in, or to play the patient game and see how things pan out? I think they're two separate things, because loans don't really lead to a long-term strategy.

Why do you think this man is so wonderful he has taken this club so far down I do wonder were we will end up there is no long term strategy at this club loan signingsfreebies and a player costing over a million that we dont need .
SWe need defenders and left footed winger this is a total waste of money

Good post. For those of you moaning about loaning players, as much as i dont like the idea of it, as long as jewell gets players in on loan with view to permanent in jan then there isnt a problem. Compared to what we had last year in terms of strength in depth, we're in a better position now than what we were. Last year we had our starting 11 then no one who would really challenge for a place where as now we have 2 or 3 good players for each position excluding defence of course. Defence definitely needs strengthening, i'd like to see 2 cbs, one of which hopefully can play left back too as cover for cresswell.

bluey123. pj hasnt taken us down newhere, keane did that. he just hasnt been able to put right all the wrongs that keane did. and before i get accused of being a jewell fan, ive many times said to mates that i wouldnt be bothered to see him leave. but at the end of the day, changing the manager every 2 years will get us nowhere, we sack him now, we're back to square 1. starting all over again.there are signs of improvement, thought there an awful long way to go, so i believe he should be given at least till the end of this season. then if things not improved much more then we shouldnt renew his contract. having said that if we should really be in trouble around dec/jan time then, yes, he should go.

Echo Blues1, chopping and changing will only mean we have to start again. PJ seems to be slowly getting things better/right, and is probably 2 signings away from a solid squad CB/Wideman. Boyd would be a cracker, and any CB will do, as i believe that Chambers and Smith will get it together. Remember Smith has spent most of the summer away from Portman Road so has had little chance to work with Chambers and all partnerships take time.

Agree with the comment re Alex Ferguson. Our own Bobby Robson had a similar start.
Agree with the comment from blues1; RK put us back and PJ is moving us forward.

Disagree with bluey123: Just try and give PJ a chance. He has even admitted that last seasons tactic of getting older experienced players in didn't work. You have to admit that the calibre of players coming in now is much better than last season. PJ is learning from his mistakes. Maybe you should try and do the same??

Simple fact of the matter is we haven't got the players at the mo, or the mental state of mind. Confidence is everything in football, as you saw on our unbeaten run last year, we had the right frame of mind and confidence to go out and believe we are going to win, because we are such a young team I think it will take a few wins on the bounce to gain that confidence to kill teams off ect, It will all come, a few players and a few good results.. we could be right up there.
