A Daryl Murphy Revolution
Written by paulthebluealien on Thursday, 9th Oct 2014 18:00

Or, should that read a 'Daryl Murphy revelation?'

Daryl Murphy. A short plea. Please, from every Ipswich fans hearts, don't stop scoring those goals. It's now up to six. Heck, I would not bet against him hitting at least 20.

Daryl Murphy. The 31-year-old Irishman who right now is playing some of the best football of his entire career. You only have to look at those goal statistics both this year and last, to see the leaps and bounds that he is not only gaining upon, but rampaging.

So, what has changed? Well, let us start from the beginning. Firstly, you do not succeed at a club as the ever frequent loanee. The man who strolls in the revolving doors in July, who is then out again by December and returns again after his stuffing and turkey in January.

Having previously been on trial at the club as long ago as 2004/05, Murphy came in to Ipswich on loan for the first time in 2010. He scored six goals in 18 games in that loan spell. That is by all means, a modest return. His next two loan spells combined 74 appearances, with a magical 11 goals. For a guy built like the Hulk, with strength and pace to match, that goal return is paltry.

Moreover, in this spell Murphy was condemned to the sadistic regimes of Keane and the bore of Jewell's reign. A man who deemed a good footballing team to consist of around seven loan players.

In fact, as I remember Murphy was consistently thrown out onto the left wing. A big, powerful player he may be, Murphy was completely ineffective. This is not without mentioning that Murphy was condemned to playing with exceptionally average strikers. The two factors are like green and yellow. The two simply do not go well.

Not for me, anyway. Now, one of the games which I remember clearly is a 3-1 home victory over Nottingham Forest at the end of 2012 and at the beginning of gorgeous Mick's tenure. He threw Murphy on up front in the 56th minute for the completely useless Tyrone Barnett. Murphy scored and terrorised that Forest defence.

Murphy is now, arguably, one of the best in the league. He scored a respectable goal tally last season and with McGoldrick, sorry, McGoaldrick up front, Town are now adding goals to the solid foundation that as some of my previous blogs have observed, was not a lacking factor even during our timid start.

Ipswich now look a very decent team. With Murphy, Sammon and super, man-crush Dave up front, goals are now expected both home and away. We can always rely on ourselves to be decent defensively and we even have creativity now in that midfield!

So, thank whichever supreme being you may believe in. Mine personally, is Big Mick for saving us from the horrors that plagued the club before him. Yours may even be Daryl Murphy, which admittedly, he would thoroughly deserve.

His transformation is simple, a striker out of position to a striker in his proper position up front. Sprinkle the magic dust of a bit of confidence and you have the player who is exceeding expectations right now.

So, in the words of every single Ipswich fan. Long let him continue to do so.

He didn't score goals consistently at left wing but to say he was completely ineffective is completely wrong.

Agreed Garv, I think he did a decent job out there when required. Honestly I think the biggest difference is that TC has taught him how to shoot! That and a bit of confidence and he suddenly looks like a genuinely dangerous player, and that has the knock on effect of giving McG more time and space to work his magic.

We will have dips in form again over the season, but the team is actually starting to look like a good footballing side once again with several viable non-loanee options in each position...Mick is doing what we needed and what he seems best at, slowly building a good side on a tiny budget, long may the good times continue!

I love Murphy. He quietly goes about his business, never gets involved in gamesmanship (diving or feigning injury) and having had the pleasure of bumping into him at a local hostelry he is quietly spoken and polite to "ordinary" folk. Certainly the staff at who look after him like him which is more than can be said for some others both current and previous employees from ITFC.
Just a shame he is towards the end of his career before it started to go right for him and us.

Murphy is on fire at the moment yes! As for loan players not coming in and settling in and playing well---- errr Johnny Williams?

Walk the wark-Johnny Williams is a young player being loaned out to a club who adore him, to gain experience of playing regularly to get him ready as he prepares for a career of regular premier league football. Murphy got passed around between clubs where he wasn't adored and sometimes played out of position for the majority of his career. It is only now he has found his home with us and has finally began to realise his potential, just a shame it's this late in his career. Comparing the two makes no sense

Loan players are a disaster and used as a stop gap for ? what?
Murphy has always given a 100%. He has always led the line. What we need to go up automatically is some one who complements him and gels, making an unasailible partnership. We dont have that and I fear we will drift away.Williams however respected is not the answer. if its not marriot it needs someone brought in. THE WRITTING IS ON THE WALL.

Daryl Murphy has turned into Paul Mariner in the last 2 months - it's as simple as that

Daryl Murphy is knocking in some right goals at the moment. TC has got him to his peak... You watch he'll be our top scorer this year.

@tractorboybig - Go back to Naaarwich

Marriot couldn't even get into the Carlisle team, so dream on about him being our answer this season
