Which drill to buy? 22:08 - Feb 26 with 6310 viewsipswich78

Any trades people about? I’m looking to buy a decent drill up to £150. It will mainly be used for wood / masonry so hammer action (or equivalent) is required. And it needs to be cordless.

Any recommendations? It seems like a minefield! There seems to be so many incremental differences between the ones I’ve been looking at - Dewalt, Makita and the Bosch Professional range.

There’s not much difference in any of the drills you’ve mentioned but I buy mainly Makita products
20 minute recharge time
Also for that price you’ll be able to pick up 2 batteries which is very handy if intending to drill plenty of holes

I've been using De Walt drill, screwdriver & circular saw for some years, never had any problems.

This Bosch unit is on Amazon prime for £115, or if you can get to Costco, £120 with 2 batteries:

Bosch PSB 18 LI-2 Ergonomic 18v Combi Power Drill

Amazon's blurb says you can get 700 screws with one battery. Nudge, nudge, wink wink.

Both my cordless and mains drills have given up the ghost in the last two weeks. Was in Elmers, Kesgrave looking at replacements today - came out totally baffled alternatives. What I do know is that they are usually one of the cheapest places in the area to buy from.

I've been using a De Walt battery hammer drill since the summer. Is pretty good (was on offer at Screwfix, about £150). Is the one with higher Amp-hourage (Ah) batteries so doesn't need charging so often.

Had a Hitachi one before that, did very good service for several years (regular use as a tradesman) - is still going but mainly used for screws nowadays.

Makita which is the brand that most use on site from accross the trades. De Walt just aren't as good in comparison in terms of longevity and power.

I picked up a dewalt drill in the sale at B&Q a few years back for £100.00. Decent piece of kit.

Best ones out there are Festool, although a bit pricey but often decent deals at Anglia Tool.

Other than that I’d say Makita

And Festool's UK office is just outside Bury St Edmunds so they're kind of local if actually German.

Interesting thread cheers. Could I just ask a stupid question: is there any use in buying a cheaper one from the like of lidl or are they good for nothing?

I got chatting to the guy in b&q a couple of weeks ago and he admitted that neither the makita or dewalt drills they sell there are actually manufactured by Makita or dewalt.

If you look at Toolstation you’ll see a proper makita 18v drill is about £400..... so I went for a cheap black and decker

I wouldn't buy a cheap one. Personally (like with a lot of things) I would rather pay £50 on EBay for a decent used product than the same price for a new rubbish product.

Thanks for all the comments, personally I would prefer to buy new - Makita, Dewalt etc. seem to come with a three year warranty and I prefer the peace of mind.

If anybody is actually using any of the brands I have mentioned specific model numbers would be useful if possible. There seems to be so many slight variations.

They tend to lack the power, accuracy and durability of decent quality kit. Can actually make the job harder by not working properly and efficiently (e.g. saws not cutting true, drill not powerful enough). Even had a cheap carpenter's square which I later discovered was fractionally out, thus messing up any woodwork I attempted.

Fine for very occasional light DIY tasks, but for anything serious, not worth it.

This. If it's something more specialist you can usually move it on for almost the same price and it works out cheaper than hiring for a few weekends.

Try to get one that has a light on it (quite a few do now) as it's handy bearing in mind that most of the time you will be standing in the way of any light source.
Although second hand is cheaper you will find that the reason they are being sold is because the battery is knackered. Unfortunately replacement batteries are dear.
