My girlfriend has been denied entry into the country. 09:52 - Oct 18 with 15375 viewsBlindOptimism

My girlfriend is Taiwanese. She lives in Taiwan, and was visiting the country for the first time, for a holiday, and to see me. Her plane landed at 4:30pm on Wednesday. After 11 hours of almost silence, aside from being asked a couple of questions about her on the phone, I was informed she had been denied entry into the country. I asked what the reason for her denial was, and they told me they couldn’t say, only that they have “criteria” and she didn’t match it.

1. She has all her documentation, including Passport and a signed “invitation” letter from me inviting her to stay at my home during her trip.

2. We have proof of our entirety of our relationship, from the moment we met, years of communication and photos of us together from my trip to Taiwan to see her.

3. We have proof that she would be staying at my home – a four bedroom house with mortgage fully paid off.

4. We have proof of my finances and that I would be sponsoring her entire stay. I am employed with regular income. I have 6-figure savings.

5. Our stories will have fully corroborated, as her visit was entirely genuine and legitimate.

After a 14 hour flight here, she now has 48 hours to sit in a an immigration centre, alone, before another 14-hour flight home. I was able to speak to her on the phone briefly at around midnight, and all she could do was cry.

I am crippled with despair for her. She hasn’t done anything wrong. We met all the publicly available criteria that we were able to find. How can we comply if they can’t tell us the reason for her denial?

That stinks.

Presumably she would also have had to get a Visa prior to travel? If so to be denied entry on arrival is a real kicker.

Is there right of appeal?

Really sorry to hear this, sounds awful and it's totally unacceptable that they won't even give you a reason that you can appeal against or fix.

I honestly don't know what's happening to this country. The least they could do is explain their reasoning.

No right to appeal. They didn't give us anything to appeal. She had all the documentation she needed.

It was a long holiday (months) and she was relying on me for sponsorship, rather than funding herself. I can only assume they didn't believe that.

Welcome to Torykip Britain.

Sucks that does. I can barely imagine what she must be feeling.

Set a specialist immigration lawyer on them - there is still accountability even if they haven't given you a specific reason.

Any chance of an appeal on this whilst she's sat in immigration?

Interestingly, I wonder if things would have been better received by immigration if you'd not had your own paid for house and savings? Maybe the alarm bells are triggered in that your girlfriend might not be in too much of hurry to get home after her holiday with you*?

*please don't see this as a dig at you, it's not meant to be.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

That's what I thought too.

Mrs May's hostile environment strikes again. Though why anyone would think it is better to be seen as hostile rather than welcoming is beyond me.

Absolutely ridiculous, so sorry for you both. Why didn't they simply contact you to confirm story? And with your house paid off, they could have kept tabs on situation - hardly as tho you're gonna do a runner is it?!

That's what we assume as well, because she was staying for the entire length her visa requirements would allow. I can only assume they thought she just wasn't going to leave again. But to me, that's assuming criminality with no evidence.

We would be happy to significantly reduce the length of her stay just to get her in, but apparently she has to leave before she can try and come back again.

They did ring me a couple of times to corroborate our story. I told them everything, genuinely and honestly. Long term, long distance relationship, coming to UK for the first time, the address where she'd be staying, my financial situation, etc. I just don't understand how they can have all that information and still decline.

Best of luck. I do hope that there's something that can be done whilst she's still on UK soil.

Appalling.

How long was she intending staying for? Sounds like you did everything possible correctly prior to the visit.

actually on the .gov.uk website

If you’re refused entry

You’ll be told in writing:

why you’ve been refused entry to the UK
if you can appeal against the decision
when you will be removed from the UK

You’ll usually have to leave the UK immediately.

You may be allowed into the UK temporarily (usually for up to a week) but your passport will be taken from you and you must report to immigration officers at set times.

Sorry, missed that they'd contacted you in your OP.

Absolutely baffling. I wonder if someone somewhere had maliciously fed them false info?

Her ticket is for October 17th to April 10th, so just under 6 months.

Even a week would be better than just sending her home again immediately. Just something. But I don't know how to get them to accept this. We've already asked if there's anything we can do, and they've declined all appeals.

Spoke to consulate in London?

I've not had time to read through so sorry if I missed that. I need to go out.

You gotta act fast whilst she's here really.

Wish you all the best.

Utterly ridiculous.

Just makes you wonder why you try and do everything 'above board' and legitimate when you could have 'bent' the truth and it would have taken them months to find out.

Feel for you dude.

Quite - in the long run, it's going to have exactly the effect "they" didn't want, and be totally counterproductive. But we all already knew they're a bunch of idiots anyway.

It's a fair bet that 'criteria' = 'hostile environment' targets. Appeal - and all the very best.

If she's visiting she has to show evidence of intent to go back to Taiwan.

My Peruvian wife has to do the same when visiting UK.

This goes under the radar though as virtue signallers only really care about the predominantly white EU nationals
