So assuming Edmundson and Chaplin sign ok.. 09:56 - Jul 27 with 4202 viewsWallingford_Boy

and Coulson eventually joins us.

Whats left?

tbh, that would probably be fine, but I'd say one more CM and ideally one more experienced CB.

Left back was the big one for me, but hopefully Coulson will sort that, then we are good to go!

RIP Sir Bobby

Agree with that. Although the other CB maybe a young understudy on loan from either the championship or premier league - Similar ilk to Pennington in gaining experience etc.

I see there was some mention of Mariappa few days ago. That wouldn’t be bad either.

Another CB, another CM and at least 1 more attacking option as wingers is still short on depth

I'd also be tempted to try and shift Donacien and get a loanee to back up KVY, if KVY is injured for a long period - which isn't a great leap to suggest may happen - we need someone who can come in and play that role in an attacking style

Not sure Cook plays with "wingers" as such, more a front three.

Chaplin/Dobra/Penney.... we seem ok on the left.

But yeah, lacking on the other side somewhat.

Maybe more another Fraser type then, that can play out wide right too.

RIP Sir Bobby

If KVY were injured, surely we would move Burns back?

I know the club denied it but Owen Dale would be ideal for covering all the attacking positions. Great age and great resale value.

RB, CB, CM/CAM & winger.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

I believe we will still be making use of the Prem Youth loan market, same as we have done for many seasons now. Will give us at least a couple of talented but not overly expensive hole fillers for the squad, of theoretically better quality (or, at least, promise) than we might be able to secure in permanent transfers.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

After those 3 join, I still think we need 3 more. An experienced CB (Mariappa seems to fit the bill), then cover in CM and someone who can act as cover across LW and RW. If Burns picks up an injury we look very light there at the moment.

But, I think the spine of the team is pretty much there now, and I can imagine we might utilise some young PL loans to use as cover in the remaining positions.

I'd be interested to know what Cook thinks of some of the young players on the fringes. Are the likes of Ndaba, El Mizouni, Dobra regarded as acceptable first reserves who could potentially play 10+ games this season? Or just as total fringe players?

If we get Edmundson as a first choice CB, Chaplin as LW and Coulson as LB, I would say we only need two more signings. A back-up winger who can play on either side (as we are still a little short there) and a back-up centre-midfielder who can play number 8 or 10 in case of an injury for Fraser or Evans/Harper (unless Humphreys can do this role, but I suspect he will return to the U23s once pre-season is over. That will leave us with:
GK - Hladky, Holy
CB - Edmundson, Nsiala, Woolfenden, Ndaba
RB - VincentYoung, Donacien
LB - Coulson, Penney
CM - Evans, Harper, Nolan, *one more*
CAM - Fraser, El Mizouni (interchangeable with the CM)
RW / LW - Burns, Chaplin, Dobra, *one more*
ST - Norwood, Piggott, Bonne

That is a squad of 23 - a good size.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

If you look at wide forwards we are well short for me - those 3 in a 4231 are basically Fraser, Burns, Chaplin and Dobra currently, maybe Bonne filling in - one injury and we are struggling for me.

That would be my guess currently re RB, but does mean what is the point in Donacien remaining as a back up RB who wouldn't play anyway....!

Agree re Dale, can get him for £650k or so apparently - the sort of player who could be worth 5 times that if puts a good 18 months together

CB, CM and a winger as others have said, the latter preferably someone fairly direct, a good PL loanee would be ok for this.

I can see 4-4-2 being used more this season though, but either way, someone wide right is definitely required.

Can't see the point of PL loans as cover, really. Just use our kids.

Another defender is a must as is another attacker. If this Cameron What’s His Name in CM is good then we probably don’t need another as long as Evans and Nolan are available.
I sort of vaguely heard Edmundson is left sided and could cover at LB if necessary but it sounds like they still want Coulson.

Think it will be exclusively 4231 but Cook might use an extra striker in the 10 position which will look a bit more 442 when attacking.

I know Ashton has strong connections with Chelsea re loan players. And Cook has a lot of credit in the bank from the Reece James loan at Wigan I imagine. Not sure what possible players they may have available though?

Broja jumped out at me but think he's an an and out front man rather than a ten or wide man? Albanian and will have played with Dobra too. Did very well with Vitesse in Holland last year.

He's right footed, don't think he's ever played left back.

Centre backs at full back just won't happen under Cook, even for a couple of games. It's such a specialised position in his formation and style of playing.

Think Broja firmly out of our range but that's a good shout re Chelsea connection, quite a few there I imagine we'd be interested in.
