Portsmouth Recall Begovic
Portsmouth Recall Begovic
Monday, 23rd Nov 2009 11:13

Portsmouth have recalled keeper Asmir Begovic from his loan spell with the Blues after David James picked up a calf injury in the warm-up ahead of their game at Stoke yesterday. The Bosnian international was due to remain with Town until January.

Begovic made six appearances for the Blues in just over a month at the club, taking over from Richard Wright after the former England man had made a number of crucial errors.

Manager Roy Keane will now have to decide whether to return to Wright or look at bringing in another loan keeper before Thursday's deadline. Prior to signing Begovic, Keane made an enquiry to Birmingham City regarding the availability of Irish international Colin Doyle.

The Blues also have Arran Lee-Barrett in their ranks with the former Hartlepool man contracted until January when new signing Brian Murphy officially joins the club on a Bosman from Irish side Bohemians.

This is a disaster - particularly with 2 tough away games. Wright has been abysmal this season and I have little faith in him - it is also evident that the defenders have little faith as well. One step forward two back for poor old Roy!

Roy will need to sign another Keeper on loan

It is a shame as the defence was at last looking settled (as we need the rest of the team to, without chopping and changing all the time!).

I think Begovic was a success and credit to him. We have only conceded 4 goals in the last 6 games. I think the reason is partly due to Begovic, partly due to the return of D.Wright and partly due to easier fixtures. Compare the last six (Swansea H, Watford H, Plymouth A, Derby H, Reading A, Sheff Wed H) to the last six under R.Wright (Middlebrough A, Nottm F H, Doncaster A, Newcastle H, Sheff Utd A, Barnsley A).

Great point. Bergavic 4 in 6. Wright 16 in 6. Enough said

And this is exactly why I saw this as a pointless exercise in the first place. He was going back whatever (be it now or January). All it was ever going to do was upset the apple cart. Now we have a pissed off Wrighty who had done little wrong anyway! Back to square one...

i'm not saying it is his fault.

Does not change the fact I want him out does it?

Last seasons player of the year will be fine now we have the defence sorted out . Begowic did well but our run coincided with Wrights return to the defence and playing poor sides in the league who have scored the fewest goals .
And as for Wright being awful all season what about the West Brom game , Leicester game , Preston game .
If we keep dropping everyone when they make a few mistakes the team will be constantly changing and have nervous players with no consistency , oh yeah that is what we have !!!!

This is a prime example why Spurs should loan us Gio. We've kept Asmir fit and playing games and given him 1st team experience. So when Portsmouth need Asmir back, he goes back after a string of fine performances and will probably slot straight into their 1st team and do very well. Gio could come back play some games and keep himself in shape so if spurs required him back he could go backa better player. I know this is grasping at straws but hey it makes sense to me.

I think RW will come back all the better from his time in the wilderness. Our defence looks a to have some solidity to it now whereas every time the opposition had the ball previously it looked like we would concede. RW is a very good goalkeeper, yes he made some mistakes but he also made some fabulous saves which people seem to forget. Ultimately goalkeeper is the least of our worries when you look at the goals scored column!

Asmir, you will be missed. Callum as you aint been to PR this season you cant comment on Wright's displays.
If Asmir had have been in goal against Sheff U we would have won.
Surco72 the defense has looked stronger because of Asmir, before he came everytime the opposition attacked or put a cross in or they had a corner everyone in the crowd thought that we were going to let another goal in.
Asmir record speaks for itself NO DEFEATS WHEN HE WAS IN GOAL.
Wrighty has never commanded his area or his six yard box, never been able to catch the ball, that is why he never made it at the so called bigger teams.
Lets hope Keano can get another Keeper in ASAP or wrighty will cost him his job.

Positives?

The defence has sorted itself out, we're unbeaten in 6 and Norris and Civelli on the horizon now. We're not longer bottom and Norwich are STILL in Div 1.

R Wright does NOT become a bad keeper overnight. Bar a handful of games where he did make several mistakes, we've all loved him since he's been back. Keane has managed him, he's had time to sort himself out and he'll come back strong.

lets focus on the strikers.... defence is now ok and we should worry too much about the GK.

As Brucie might say "What baaaaaad luck". Oh well, shame, but I've got no problem with Wrighty coming back in, now that the back 4 in front him look more settled. Cheers, Asmir.

pickles: you are hilarious sometimes, you really are. A few weeks ago you likened someone criticising Keane for being violent (in lreation to his cowardly hack of Haaland) to our granparents giving up their lives and fighting for our country in the second world war. One of the most ridiculous things I think I've ever read.

And now I see that Richard Wright will be the reason that Keane gets sacked if we lose the next couple of games! Genius!

Because obviously all of the team's problems are down to Wright. With him gone we've won 6 games in a row. Oh hang on, we haven't. Yes we've been tighter at the back but, as others have pointed out, there's more than one contributing factor that. But the fact remains that we've been rubbish this season and it's not all the goalkeeper's fault.

I'm surprised you can see to type for having your tongue wedged up a certain manager's rear-end.

Whilst I recognise that the teams we played with Asmir in goal have been a lot weaker than the teams we played in the six matches leading to him coming to the club, I still believe he has made a big difference and we will miss him. Still competition for places is what this is all about and now that Wrighty has got his chance back, he must take it with both hands. My worry is that with two tough matches around the corner letting in goals could shatter his confidence.

I have no idea how good this Irish guy is going to be, but I wonder if RK made a firm bid for Asmir in January, whether Portsmouth would sell?

SInce RW 'mistakes' were made playing behind possibly the worse defence I have ever seen play for Ipswich think he took more of the share of blame than he should have. Now that the defence is sorted you will see the the best goalkeeper in the CCC in action.

Gutted to hear this on skysports.

Hopefully Begovics positive performances have worn off on Wright whilst he's been warming a seat at the side of the pitch! Prob not though!

Fingers crossed our defence was just assisted by begovic in sorting themselves out a bit and will continue to play well despite him not being behind them.

Starting to get worried though, season so far has been full of disappointing moments such as this. Still in this position at xmas, you cannot help but start twitching a bit.

pickles: must apologise, sorry. I've just found the post I'd remembered and it was by DrJekyll. So I was completely wrong on that and, to be honest if I hadn't thought it was you I wouldn't have been so hard on you in my post about the Wright comment.

Though I still think it was a pretty stupid comment (I can't be that contrite, sorry).
