Town Back in for Palace Skipper Derry
Town Back in for Palace Skipper Derry

Town are being linked with a renewed move for Crystal Palace skipper Shaun Derry. TWTD first broke the news of the Blues’ interest in the out-of-contract 32-year-old a month ago, but it had appeared that the ex-Sheffield United and Leeds man had instead opted for a reunion with former boss Neil Warnock at QPR.

However, reports in London now claim that Town are set to grab Derry’s signature with the Blues said to have alerted Rangers of their intentions in order to prevent agents from playing one club off against the other with regard to wages.

One factor which reportedly could scupper Derry’s move to Loftus Road is Warnock’s unwillingness to guarantee the holding midfielder a place in his side, although whether Town would offer such assurances seems unlikely.

Derry, 6ft tall, started his career with hometown club Notts County before moving on to Sheffield United for £700,000 in January 1998. Two years later, a £300,000 deal took him to Portsmouth, then in 2002 he joined Palace for a first spell for £400,000.

Having been on loan at Nottingham Forest during the Eagles’ 2004/05 Premier League campaign, Derry eventually signed for Leeds for £250,000 late in that season.

In November 2008, he moved back to Palace on loan, making the switch a permanent one the following January for an undisclosed fee.

Derry came close to joining the Blues on loan in November 2004 during Joe Royle’s time as Town manager, but Palace preferred to do a permanent deal with Leeds.

Didn't Chopra and Derry have a spat last season or year before? Let's hope if we sign Derry it doesn't make Chopra think twice about joining us!

Wow, bringing in a 32 year old has been, great, because thats just what you need in a 46 game season, a midfielder whos legs are shot. Baffling?

heard him interviewed on Talksport a few weeks ago and seem a decent chap. The holding midfield role would be perfect for us, allowing others to get up and support the strikers. I would welcome him and he would be good captain material.

Can't see him coming here as I doubt we can offer him a garunteed first team place so he will go to QPR I presume.

hype313 - what makes you say his legs are shot? Did you see him in action much last season?

Only 32, so still got a few good years left in him - would be a top signing I reckon.

I don't rate Derry, not good enough to get us up. If we are looking for holding midfield players i would go for someone like Nolan at Newcastle or Scott Parker. I hope we sign Chopra to score the goals and maybe someone experienced to play off him, Klose has looked quite good for Germany or maybe Heskey or Carew they cant both be needed at Villa.

I'd like to see him here as I think he could do a job for us. He just needs to know that last year was a blip for us and this year he could be part of something good.

He may be ok, but it is a long time since ''Big Joe'' wanted in him, he would probably have been more useful then .

Our main problem is scoring goals so bringing in a 32 year old holding midfielder is hardly the answer. Also all this talk of Chopra, we'll probably end up with Alan Lee back on the eve of the season.

Does the re-emergence of this story have anything to do with the appointment of George Burley down at Selhurst Park?

Derry is crud. If I was a Dagenham and Redbridge fan I'd be quite happy to sign him.
I'm not and if he signs for Ipswich it's another reason to be pessimistic... Unless of course you are Swinger.

would not be my first choice, but i don't get paid a million a year to make them

Thanks Swinger! Cheered me up no end.

Klose or Alan Lee? WTF! Your all mad . . . We'll start pre-season with no new players and a really pissed off set of fans, this will result in a crap start in some hard opening games and as such the season will be set up for doom and gloom!

. . . on the other hand, a couple of key signings and some 'dead wood' out! Sorted.

um corshamblue,i think your first point unfortunately will be correct, either no one in,or average, over the hill, bargain cheap easy option players.

Could be just the kind of player we need, someone to lead the team and be a commanding presence in both defence and midfield. I hope he still has plenty to offer with his feet too, but like it or lump it we've got to trust Roy's judgement. However, if Derry was Warnock's captain he's got to have something about him.

Of course a goalscorer is the priority, but many of you are posting the same old drivel before engaging brain as usual.

the opposite of what we want...if keane goes for him it will simply reinforce what i think of him (TW*T)

Good idea, Swinger - let's try to sign players who are too expensive/not for sale/not available.

Far better than chasing sensible targets ...

No recognised right back at the club, yet still no news on that front. I know that the transfer roundabout is still slow at the moment, but not even any 'Town linked with.............."

Don't get me wrong - an experienced hard tackling player is exactly what we want. BUT do we need another midfielder (other than left side)?

TRANSFER MARKET BLUES

The links come in so thick and fast
Them press boys, well they have a blast
we're signing him & he will do
but most of it's a load a poo!!

We need a striker, there's no doubt
A clever chap, the ball to clout
A left back here, a right back there
But who will be our central pair?

We start again so full of hope
Is Roy Keane the 'real deal' bloke?
I guess we'll have to wait and see
What lay's in store for thee and me?

But Keaneo please no boasts this time
Your predictions, they've become a crime
We're going up is all we hear
Shame we don't just know the year!!

So dear Keaneo, start to sign
Chopra & Hooper will do just fine
Can they please just all have style
And not come from the Emerald Isle!!

Will we sign the greats they moan
Or journeymen that come on loan
Like the press, you and me
Well, we'll have to wait and see!!
