Walters Stripped of Captaincy
Walters Stripped of Captaincy
Friday, 13th Aug 2010 21:27

Wantaway wideman Jon Walters is understood to have been stripped of the captaincy and dropped for Saturday’s first home game of the season against Burnley. Boss Roy Keane hinted that the midfielder or striker, who is interesting Stoke and another Premier League club, might not be his captain this weekend at Thursday’s press conference.

Keane hit out at Walters for asking for a move, adding that his status as captain was likely to be in jeopardy when asked if he remained in possession of the armband: “He is today, but football changes on a daily basis.”

Midfielder David Norris was praised by Keane for his performance as skipper at Exeter on Tuesday and will take the armband against the Clarets.

Good Choice in Norris - another player with a GREAT work ethic and a good role model for the younger players.

No player is bigger than the Club and Keane has acted swiftly NOT because Jon wants to leave which i think we all understand BUT because he (Jon Walters) has tried to force the deal through at a price which i hear is well below ITFC valuation, i posted previously my support and understanding for Jon Walters but his agent and Tony Pulis seem to be a right pair of W*NK*RS

@WickhamWonderland - I'm more of an optimist - I don't think Town will be in the Championship next year

well done Roy, i havn't got a problem with Walters wanting to leave but like Roy said there is a way to go about it. Good choice if it is to be Norris-good luck to the boys tomorrow,COYB.

I completely understand JW being stripped of the captaincy (it would send out all the wring signals if he had retained it), but with the squad being so thin at the moment I would have expected him to keep his place in the team. That said, if his heart isn't in it then it's probably the right decision. For the good of the team his transfer has got to be sorted out sooner rather than later.

Real shame it's come to this, but bang on behind keane on this. By saying he wants out he's wanting town to accept a low bid to get rid of him. Pulis has prob said I'll buy you for a million so you need to manipulate it your end. Dirty tricks between Walters, his agent and stoke. So what do we do, banish him to the reserves and continue to pay the wages or let the kiddy get his way and sell low?

You have to understand that Walters knows he has a limited playing career so when his agent tells him you can get more money at stoke you can understand why he wants the deal to go through.
However he should remember we did buy him from chester so he owes us something!

Also, I personally believe Leadbitter would make a better captain, though Norris is a good worker and also a good example to the youngsters, barring the whole 'handcuffs' gate.

Good to see Norris captain v Burnley, long may he lead our team to Championship glory. Love Keane's honesty in all that is ITFC. Feel like a kid on Christmas Eve can't wait for the match tomorrow to kick off, we're guaranteed to see more passion and fight than our sorry national team. COYB

Norris is a very good choice he should have been captain a long time ago, walters has been a good servant to us,but you cant have someone like him throwing his toys out of the pram when you have a lot of youngsters coming through.

I have been 110% behind Keano since day one at town, but its funny how some people have changed their tune and now he can do no wrong? Whats the matter Itfc moaners, lost your TWTD password?

Great decision to have Norris as captain, a real leader, but surely Mcauley and Leadbitter cant be far behind? Give it 6 months and add Hyam and Smith that list!

Thank you and goodbye Jon Walters. Always gave 100% but hopefully we get a good fee to spend on McCormack, Scotland etc. Norris is a great choice as captain.
COYB! KEANO!!!

Excellent, about time, never captain material as demonstrated by the lack of team motivation last year. Also maybe now we can start to play a bit more rather than using the desperate lump up the right flank for Walters to flick on to nobody!. He was brillian against Bristol City couple of seasons ago when we humped them at PR but can't recall that many repeat performances. Easily replaced by other names mentioned this week.

I can't understand Keane's decisions. Why to threat Walters that way? If the player wants to move PL, then he can go. We get some money. Walters have been great servant to the club and he gives everything on every game. That's why Stoke wants him.
Now Keane is doing same thing with JW than with Pablo.

If this way continues we're going to be a club that most of the players don't want to come in. Crazy manager without any skills to get on with different kind of human types...

I like the idea of Norris as captain.

If Walters leaves, this is a disappointing way for his time at Town to end. He has so often been our best player and has always been committed on the pitch when I have seen him,

A bigger concern: What if Walters does not go? What if Stoke do not meet our valuation or don't make a bid at all? I am sure Keane is frustrated by it all and his comments sound genuine and honest, but I do not think it has been best to put this all out in the open.

I like Norris but I wish Leadbitter was captain. Very strong and leads from the front. Walters - Get going.

Good decision, if he doesn't want to be part of the team then he doesn't deserve to be captain of it. Hard worker no doubt but won't be a huge loss in terms of quality. Much better players on their way hopefully, it is a shame that football has turned into a money game, especially when you look back on the game in the 60's and 70's. Wish i had been around then to be part of it

Get real finnishblue. It's nothing like the same. Walters has hung the club out to dry.

"FinnishBlue"... The reason you "can't understand" is because you obviously a little naive to the workings of a stable football club. Not that I know much better, but having characters around the club that feel, to quote Keane, "they are bigger than the club" can only have a bad effect on morale.

"We get some money"...? Yes we get some money, but Keane has said all along Walters is only moving if we receive an offer deemed acceptable. And if you are a true fan, you would have been at Portman Road for the Spurs XI friendly and seen Pablo deserves to have been frozen out of the first team picture.

And last point, "a club most players don't want to come into". Thats why Mark Kennedy, Andros Townsend and Connor Houridane have all signed, with it appearing Jason Scotland and Ross McCormack at least seeming interested...
