Burley: Pablo Deal Not Yet Done
Burley: Pablo Deal Not Yet Done
Thursday, 19th Aug 2010 16:16

Crystal Palace manager George Burley says there’s still work to do before Pablo Couñago’s loan move to Selhurst Park is completed. The Spaniard is out of favour at Portman Road having fallen out with boss Roy Keane.

Former Town manager Burley says the clubs have been in talks regarding the 31-year-old’s switch: "We have spoken to Ipswich about him but there is nothing settled at the moment. It would be a loan basis for the rest of the season, but we still have got to finalise that.

"There have been too many deals that have fallen through at the last minute in the last couple of months so I never count my chickens until they have actually hatched."

Couñago, who was first brought to Town by Burley in 2001, is out of contract at Portman Road at the end of the season.

Even if the deal goes through before the weekend, Couñago is unlikely to play against Town on Saturday.

He'll go - at least someone wants him. Good luck to him - I still think he could play some part for us.

The only way Pablo will play a part for us again is if he dons the Crazee costume!

I wish Pablo all the best for the future, but he needs to move on.

I've always seen Pablo as a talented individual who struggles in a team. He's one of those who could go to another team and either shine or languish. I wish him all the best and hope things work out - just not too well if Palace (I presume) are close competition

Burley will drag this out to get Town to pay as close to 100% of Pablo's wages as possible. We have no negotiating position here at all: there is no competition for his signature, and Pablo is probably pretty happy just to sit the year out. Any relief, however slight, will be welcome, and GB knows that. And, especially as Pablo couldn't play on Saturday, why not drag it out into next week?

Counago is now as out-in-the-cold as Lisbie and Thatcher were, so there is no chance he will play for Ipswich again. Burley knows it and will indeed hold out for a deal where Palace pay the smallest percentage possible of his wages. Oh well, at least it will be good to see him leave. I always liked Pablo's skill, if only his attitude were better (it is not just Keane, as he fell out with Royle too).

Good luck Pablo.
I never really liked your style and you have never been the striker we all wanted you to be with your abilities but you served this club for a long time and I really wish you all the best in the future!

I was really hoping there might be some news on players coming in today, bt I have again wasted much of my working day checking on here with nothing happening. What does clegg do all day I wonder ?? Can anyone enlighten me ??

As for pablo , it's a shame he never applied himself properly and it's best he moves on.

Thank god we have Priskin to replace Pablos vision finesse and skill, lets just ignore his strengths play to his weaknesses then expect him to perform miracles in 10minutes from the bench then next year complain what a useless money grabbing foreign to**ss*r he is............then if Keane backs him he's the greatest thing since sliced bread again. Pablo could do a job for us I'm convinced some of the others never will.

GroovyASH - what's Pablo being Spanish got to do with it? If he was English would you call him a greedy English money-grabbing git?

Child.

Sheff wed were sniffing a few months back , and swansea last year but it appears he wont budge from ipswich area so its touch and go if he can be persuaded to commute to palace.

You are all probably right about us paying most of his huge wages . recon he is on 10+ a week . Crazy. !

arc - Our bargaining position goes along the lines of "we'll keep him unless you pay x% of his wages." Not a great bargaining position like you say, but the survival of the club does not depend on Pablo leaving, so if worst comes to the worst, he stays. This is not ideal but Pablo's career will be effectively over if he is left to rot in the reserves for another year and Palace need reinforcements so it is in everyone's best interest to see this done.

Thanks for the good times Pablo...

Its a shame about Pablo, at times he does bring a sense of vision and footballing inciciveness that too often the English game lacks,at this level anyway. Problem is you still have to work hard and ultimately a striker will always be judged on what he puts in the net and in his case its nowhere near enough. If there was a sign that he could produce the goods on a regular basis then there is then the incentive to play to his strengths bt it has not happened this time around and it didnt in Malaga either. I think that part of his problem is that he thinks he is better than he actually is and is happy to inspect the grass and demand a free kick off the ref.Like i said, its a shame, and i wish him all the best but we move on.

God only knows what the Palace fans are thinking about having Town hand me downs.

Never really rated the guy, average @ best. when Burley sighned him in 01 we were led to believe he was the next 'Raul'!! Raul moat more like!! over rated, often lazy money grabber. think we only re-signed him when the Francis Jeffers deal didn't happen, Magilton thought that would placate the fans. Rather nervous about who's coming in now! come on Clegg !! pull your finger out!! UP THE TOWN!!!
