Jewell: Martin Has Chance to Impress
Jewell: Martin Has Chance to Impress
Thursday, 20th Jan 2011 16:38

Town boss Paul Jewell says it’s up to winger Lee Martin to impress him now that he’s been called back from his loan spell at Charlton. The former Manchester United man had been expected to stay at the Valley until the end of the season before the new Town manager utilised a 24-hour call-back clause earlier in the week.

Jewell said: "Lee gives us another option and we will have a look at him. He's done quite well at Charlton and provides something different. We will see how he gets on, it's up to Lee now.

“He was left out of the team at Charlton on Saturday and there was no point in him being there if he’s not playing. I was going to call him back anyway and he’ll be in the squad and under consideration.”

Meanwhile, former Town loanee Andros Townsend has joined Watford from Spurs for the remainder of the season. The winger had been on a season-long spell with the Blues until he was sent back just before Christmas.

Elsewhere, ex-Blues wideman Danny Haynes has joined Barnsley from Bristol City for an undisclosed fee, signing a contract until 2013.

Townsend has gone - we move on.

Good luck to Martin - hope he does well for us. Hopefully his time away has made him a better player

Casting for Bambi on ice again? The man makes Colin Healey look a class act.

Go stand in the corner Jewell this is a big mistake.

Well as watford are already one of the top scorers in this league i think them getting townsend will really help their push for promotion, so thanks keane.
As far as martin is concerned he may play alot better in a football team rather than keanes hoof ball one up front at home style.

Makes sense for Jewell to check him out for himself as clearly he does not want to take RK opinion of a player. If he falls short again then I am sure that PJ will loan or send him out again.
Would hope to see Civelli given a run out sometime soon too, perhaps Saturday, last half hour?

some of you dont know what your talking about! yes he cost us a fair bit, but he has potential. He only played 16 games for us last season, and i hate to think how many of those were whole games! he has the talent, just needs someone to put an arm around him- and jewell will do that! all im saying is look at prisken now, quality player at the moment...

I doubt Charlton were paying much of Martin's wages, so what is the harm in bringing him back? He has 2.5 years of his contract left, so it makes total sense to bring him back and take a look at him. Maybe without the pressure of the big price tag and expectations he will surprise us this time and do well? Let's give him a chance at least.

Loan players are not the way forwards unless they can be signed permanently, but once we had Townsend for a season's loan and he did pretty well then it was a shame to send him back prematurely. Oh well, let's hope one of Civelli, Martin or O'Connor are able to excel on the left!

With the injurys and players going back to there own clubs, we really need someone to play on the left. For now martin will do but a I would like to see civelli in the near future.

WITH THE SQUAD SHORTAGE OF EXPERIENCED PLAYERS WE WILL BE BETTER WITH LEE THAN WITHOUT HIM, WHO KNOWS MAYBE HE WILL IMPROVE FROM HIS PREVIOUS TIME HERE, IM SURE THE PJ WILL DO WONDERS FOR HIM, WE CAN HOPE, GOOD LUCK LEE

bluelady you talk alot of sense, both you and I have been saying on several subjects that this is a different manager with differing skills, I just wish some of those posting understood. I suspect PJ's man management skills is that much better than RK's and may he be able to extract the best from Martin. Also although we as Town fans know Martin to be an extremely expensive flop, PJ is doing right by seeing him for himself. Aagin respect to this very professional manager, and to you bluelady.

Everyone crucified Priskin but he has been our most effective striker this season...Give Lee Martin a chance and get him down the chippie to put a bit of weight on.
PJ needs to see his squad, make changes and sort RK's mess

Lets give him a chance oncemore, some players play better under different managers, let's hope he can do well, if only at least to try and recoup some money for him in the summer?

thanks Lennyboy, id just like to know how amazing these people are at there own 'trade' that gives them the right to continue to moan and moan about everyone and everything. Ok he maybe a flop again but Prisken for one is beginning to show what he can do why not Martin....Also Jewell does know him he tracked him as a youngster and was impressed with him so he clearly has seen potential... if it doesnt work we have lost nothing as no doubt we were getting very little in payment of his wages and we are in desperate need of a left winger (Yes id love to see Civelli but he cant just be thrown straight back in to full 90 mins week in week out and im not sure what sort of player he will be after such a bad confidence knock, again hopefully Jewell can sort that issue!)

Not to have re-called Lee Martin would have been ridiculous given the investment by the club. Played in position with a credible brief on his role who knows what may happen. Last times out he was pointed all over the park by the manager of the day. Bring him on PJ. Good luck LM

good luck lee. with some proper man managment from p j, we could well start to see the potential invested in him and give us some much needed width. coyb.

I really hope I'm wrong about Martin but lets be honest he did nothing first time around with us and that was before the Keane effect got established. At Charlton he started off well but then could not even get into the team. How then can he become a successful player with us - putting arms around people does not make them better players you either have it or you don't. At Man United he was blessed with playing with outstanding players but as soon as he left he was exposed. Just ask Forest fans what he was like with them - I can tell you now they were not impressed. If PJ gets him playing then he is a miracle worker so lets hope he is.

bluelady added 21:49 - Jan 20
Surely playing with top players would expose you even more?? Not saying it will work out but right decision to give him a chance just wish some fans would do the same

Bluelady, i admire your support for the lad, but had RK recalled him you and many others would have been up in arms.
Having said that i hope it works out for Martin but surely this is his " Last Chance Saloon "
