Clegg: No Deals Imminent
Clegg: No Deals Imminent
Saturday, 21st May 2011 10:36

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Town fans will have to wait a little bit longer for the Blues’ first signings of the summer with no deals set to be completed over the weekend. However, the Town chief says that situation can change very quickly with attempts to land new additions to Paul Jewell's squad ongoing.

Clegg, speaking to TWTD at last night’s launch of the Ipswich Town in Europe exhibition, said: “We’re working behind the scenes, there’s nothing that is imminent at this moment in time, Paul's away at the moment, but that doesn’t mean the situation might not change in 24 or 48 hours.

“But at the moment here’s nothing imminently in the pipeline which will come to fruition within the next 48 hours.”

The chief executive kept to the club’s usual policy of not talking about specific targets: “I do not get involved in discussions about speculation or about individual players until we have something to announce one way or another.”

No, Jewell did not say there would definitely be a transfer in that week. He said he was "... HOPEFUL of MAYBE completing a deal next week." (my emphasis): http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=18378

And we did, indeed make an approach - to Doncaster - which didn't succeed.

He further qualified it a few days later, expressing even more caution: http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=18406 (3rd paragraph).

As usualsome of the posts on this site seem to be based on an abundance of fatuitous opinion, uninformed gossip and down right slanderous statements! Jewell stated he hoped deals were imminent - they were - except Donny blew them out of the water..what else do you expect him to say when he is bombarded with questions and the club is desperatly trying to shore up flagging ticket sales!!! Get real...look at Norwich and what they have achieved since going down a few seasons ago...and also look at other clubs that have had money...QPR being a good example...it has taken them time to find the manager who can get them out of this cut throat division...might not keep them in the Premier league but plenty of money has been spent by a succession of QPR managers. So be patient - listen to some of the more informed opinion on this site that obviously can read, understand what they are reading and then they make informed posts ...six deals down so far in the Championship...fact!

Trouble is people have no faith in smeghead to get the job done.

Looking at the contract situ, PJ says it must never happen again (he is right) and smeghead comes in with the classic it was all part of some masterplan and was allowed to happen on purpose.

ME has made a right hash of running ITFC.
He may get lucky and be saved by PJ, but I regret the day I voted for ME at the EGM. Knightsy was right, but we all laughed at him in our collective greed to take the money, which up to now has bought nothing but misery.
There were other local interested parties, perhaps we should have waited, but the ME money seemed on face value to be very attractive.

After ITFC came out of admin it had to be run on a nil overdraft basis day to day, so whilst the Club was viable and not going bust it had no money to spend on players and increased wages so ME seemed a good idea at the time.
Trouble was he bought beano and smeghead with him and the damage those two have done runs very deep.

Thiiiiiings. Can ooooooonly get betterrr uh errrrrr.

Season's not finished yet, many players (and in our case, even managers) are on their holidays at present, others are still in play off contention (notably Peterborough, who Jewell has been "watching" recently), the Bullard deal is likely to drag on for most of the summer if he is that hell-bent on coming here and in all truth, Doncaster have talked the talk with Sharp but we haven't given them a testing offer to make them really think. We are sure to be playing a waiting game with a number of potential players targeted whose contracts are up in the summer and with contract extensions on the table from their current clubs. Keep the faith!

Hello everyone, first comment on here, just joined. As the name says i live in diss and far to many yellow and green shirts for my liking. And i think thats half the problem, seeing the success they had and we want the same, but rushing through a couple of signings isnt the way forward, we want the right players in, good players who want to wear the blue and white with pride.
Lets go back 2 seasons, narwich had just been thrashed at home by colchester, and we were going places (or so we thought with roy keane) and i certainly thought that clegg and evans were taking us in the right direction, in contrast i dont think too many narwich fans believed in delia and wyn jones. Lambert turns it around when the season had already started. We have got plenty of time to sign players b4 the new season, lets be patient and get the right ones in.
Lets be positive, i have to be, i have had a bet with so many narwich fans that we will be taking their premiership place. COYB

dirtydingusmagee, maybe not a wise bet, but my pride made me do it, only just finished off paying this seasons lost bets, may need a second job then next season. Or moving could be an option, lol. We have suffered mediocrity or less for too long now, things must surely change and i believe they will, but you are right mate it may not be next season, depends on getting the right players in, and at the moment we havent made a poor signing yet. But it will be great when we hear who our first signing is. The excitement is killing me.

Ive said it before and i'll say it again, while Mr Bean of the closing a deal world is in charge of signing players up i wont get excited about any potential deals until i see the player with a blue shirt on in a press conference, its not worth it, this man couldnt close a door!! he is way out of his depth, simple as.

Signings imminent, its a bit like the quote about ST sales, '13K' yeh, and we will be signing Sharp, Nugent and Mackail-Smith next I suppose, do me a favour, this club is a joke, come August and we are still scratching round for a team, then the quote will be 'well it's difficult to attract players here' well perhaps if some our of our lot got of their backsides and chased some players we might get somewhere instead of sitting back like we have done for past 4 years, complacent with a capital C.

Clegg is the weak link in all this. Get rid and get someone who knows what they are doing!!
I can see the same rubbish that we had to put up with last summer, Keane had the players in his office and Clegg f***ed up the deals..............The same will happen again!

Dissboyitfc. I was a Diss boy for many years so have seen the increase in yellow shirts for myself as i still have clients there, but now live in my birthplace, Ipswich. This proliferation of budgies on the border has been steadily increasing for the last few years & it doesn,t take a rocket scientist to work out why. Winning team, lower prices for season tickets & on match days & better performances on the pitch. Your post was spot on in that we need as a club to be patient, get in the right players for the team & build a solid squad as Lambert has done. We need to face facts, at present, they are a bigger club than us because of their new premier league status & the millions of pounds that will bring. Many lessons to be learned from up the A140 methinks!!!!!!!

...... for me I have to say the glass is half empty right now.
I am genuinely concerned as to the current plight of this Club, we do not stand well that's for certain, no queue of players wanting to sign, no clear intention or directive, little or no Combination activity next season, many experienced players and staff having left the Club, not impressed with apparent Coaching or Scouting ability currently at the Club. I could go on.

Unfortunately, I am old enough to compare the above with what we have previously had at the Club, and with allegedly less wealth.
I guess many of the older associates and supporters will share my concerns - I know for a fact some do.

I hope that come mid July the glass will be at least half full - but I won't be holding my breath on that.
A few short weeks - much, much work to be done, on many, many fronts to restore and keep the faith of many supporters.
