Chopra at Portman Road Today
Chopra at Portman Road Today
Thursday, 9th Jun 2011 10:19

TWTD understands that Cardiff striker Michael Chopra will be at Portman Road today to complete the formalities of his move and if all goes well to sign on the dotted line. The Blues and Bluebirds have agreed a £1.5 million deal for the 27-year-old frontman.

Town, who previously targeted the former Sunderland and Newcastle man during Roy Keane’s time in charge, are understood to have turned their attention back to Chopra late last month after having a £2.3 million offer for Doncaster striker Billy Sharp turned down.

An initial offer of £1 million was turned down by the managerless Welsh club but a subsequent £1.5 million offer in the last couple of days was accepted by the play-off semi-finalists.

As is their usual policy, the club are remaining tight-lipped regarding the situation but we expect the former England U21 international to be at the club today to continue talking terms and to undergo a medical.

The one-time Newcastle trainee, who is contracted to Cardiff until 2012, scored 11 goals in 28 starts and 11 sub appearances during 2010/11 despite being in and out of the side due to injuries.

Overall, Chopra, who also had loan spells with Watford, Nottingham Forest and Barnsley before joining Cardiff for the first time from Newcastle for £500,000 in June 2006, has scored 65 goals in 142 starts and 20 sub appearances over his two permanent spells and two periods on loan with the Welsh side.

In July 2007 the 5ft 9in tall frontman joined Roy Keane's Premier League Sunderland for £5 million, rejoining Cardiff permanently for £4 million two years later after successful spells on loan in the second half of 2008/09.

Meanwhile, striker Connor Wickham suffered an ankle injury in training with the England U21s this morning after a tackle by Manchester United new recruit Phil Jones but the problem is not thought to be serious.

Cardiff 126 full games 56 goals
Sunderland 22 games 8 goals (in the prem)
Barnsley 38 games 17 goals
Forest 3 games 0 goals
Watford 4 games 5 goals
If we dismiss Newcastle stats as he was so young and was mainly a sub that's:
86 goals in 193 games thats a goal every 2.25 games so in a full 46 games with no injuries MC could be banging in 20+ goals - and best of all his scoring ratio apart from the 3 game spell at Forest has always been a goal every 2 - 2.5 games so no flash in the pan. As Jewell favours keeping the spine of the team unchanged where possible I might have a few quid on Chopra to get the FLC golden boot next year if this goes through!

I'm cautiously optimistic on this one - with the emphasis on "cautiously." Good price and still a good age. May just be the catalyst we require to convince others to get deals done. Maybe... But if the powers that be at PR (and I don't mean PJ) cock this one up, then the verdict will be crushing. On the other hand, we don't know how many of the other rumours have been just that - rumours and smokescreens. No one in the Championship has made masses of signings yet to my knowledge. Let's hope this is the first of about 7 (although 3 would do)!COYB!

You on a wind-up again Whoppit? This would be a great signing. Now get us St.Ledger, Bullard and things will be looking up...at last!

FFS! Are you ever encouraged by anything whoppit? We could be about to sign Messi and you'd probably still find something to grumble about. Lighten up jeez..

It's hilarious - all you lot thinking that if a player announces he is keen to come here (that means his agent has done all the groundwork, agreed terms and given his thumbs-up by the way), that somehow or another Clegg can 'mess it up'. Too many 'Carry On' films I guess.

Be patient guys and girls....but remember he won't be the first player recently to walk away without signing.

Oh heavens - I am glad I didn't say anything about St Ledger who was crap at Middlesbrough and was a fixture in a relegated side at Preston.

I would get excited at Bullard but there is no chance there guys.

Good news right?! How long we been after him? Long time - interesting that Town is an appealing option for him post-Keane's tenure.

Fantastic signing! Can't believe we're so close to signing someone of his quality. The future is blue.

Im licking my chops (sorry!) at the thought of this but wont be satisfied until he has signed on the dotted line. I know recruiting another striker was high on the list of priority signings for the summer but I cant help but think that this is to make way for Connor to leave us for Liverpool. I personally think he'd benefit from another season of regular football at this level before making the switch though. If Connor does leave then surely we will need to get another striker in. I have to say that a Chopra and Nugent partnership would be quality in my opinion!

Hopefully the St Ledger bid will be accepted and a few more of the rumours I heard last night via Facebook come to fruition over the next week or so! (Cresswell from Preston and Pearce from Bournemouth)

Lets hope that things are on the up - COYB!

Nice bit of business by Jewell and Clegg here as long as his wages aren't over 14k a week I think this is a bargain in todays market. A proven striker capable of 20+goals a season for under 2M- No one in our Division will be able to pull off a coup like that.(not inc free agents)

Can we possibly try and get Peter Whittingham from Cardiff too?? Excellent player at this level, and if Cardiff are in financial trouble he might be worth the punt? Would definitely give our midfield a bit more creativity and take the pressure of Leadbitter for next season too!

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate waiting! Really hope this comes off, don't let him leave without siging a contract!

There have been a lot of rumours floating about regarding Chopra signing lately. Lets hope the deal is a fair way done. This what the club needs right now, a quality signing, a good sign of intent. It shows the likes of doncasters chairman that we won't be held to ransome and are prepared to go elsewhere.

I'm as impatient as everyone to get some new players in, but I'm not worried as we know the club have been putting bids in, showing players around the ground and scouting. There hasn't been a great deal of transfer activity by anyone other than the budgies. Also could it be that our targets are players who have been away withtheir international sides so any deals will take longer.

Don't mess this signing up town. I'd like to be in a good mood tonight!

Well phil, u r good! According to Cardiff city fanzine, it says you're reporting on Chopra joining Town, then it says in brackets 'who are usually quite good at this thing' lol
I'm guessing they haven't read ALL the rumours that get posted on here eh??
Our very own star!
