Chopra at Portman Road Today
Chopra at Portman Road Today
Thursday, 9th Jun 2011 10:19

TWTD understands that Cardiff striker Michael Chopra will be at Portman Road today to complete the formalities of his move and if all goes well to sign on the dotted line. The Blues and Bluebirds have agreed a £1.5 million deal for the 27-year-old frontman.

Town, who previously targeted the former Sunderland and Newcastle man during Roy Keane’s time in charge, are understood to have turned their attention back to Chopra late last month after having a £2.3 million offer for Doncaster striker Billy Sharp turned down.

An initial offer of £1 million was turned down by the managerless Welsh club but a subsequent £1.5 million offer in the last couple of days was accepted by the play-off semi-finalists.

As is their usual policy, the club are remaining tight-lipped regarding the situation but we expect the former England U21 international to be at the club today to continue talking terms and to undergo a medical.

The one-time Newcastle trainee, who is contracted to Cardiff until 2012, scored 11 goals in 28 starts and 11 sub appearances during 2010/11 despite being in and out of the side due to injuries.

Overall, Chopra, who also had loan spells with Watford, Nottingham Forest and Barnsley before joining Cardiff for the first time from Newcastle for £500,000 in June 2006, has scored 65 goals in 142 starts and 20 sub appearances over his two permanent spells and two periods on loan with the Welsh side.

In July 2007 the 5ft 9in tall frontman joined Roy Keane's Premier League Sunderland for £5 million, rejoining Cardiff permanently for £4 million two years later after successful spells on loan in the second half of 2008/09.

Meanwhile, striker Connor Wickham suffered an ankle injury in training with the England U21s this morning after a tackle by Manchester United new recruit Phil Jones but the problem is not thought to be serious.

Does the signing of Chopra mean that any deal for Bullard is now dead in the water? And if Kieron comes can we sure that he and Copra will not be injured at the same time? Still, better this than chasing wingers from relegated and near relegated teams for our creativity.

When Chopra plays for us, he won't have the likes of "Toys out the Pram Bothroyd" and "Overpaid Bellamy" hindering his goal scoring chances... We all know he is a proven goal scorer and we all know that this deal is complete.

Welcome to Ipswich, Mikey!

(I'm sure it was you who nodded at me at Liverpool Street this mornng??)

i my self am not worried about the goalkeeper area with fulop and lee barrett aswell as pollit if he was to come as player/coach plus the youth team guy.defence we def need sorting.as norris is acting the arse then we can do with a central midfielder.Personally we are well covered in wide players with martin, carson, edwards, peters,o'conner and wickham if need be.maybe another decent goalscorer up front.just need a player inthe middle of the park to spray the ball around and to do that killer pass

Would like to see another good striker sign before I get excited, given that it looks as though Connor is on the way out :(

Chopra and Wickham would have been a lovely combo for next season.

Add Bullard/Dyer/Other, Right back and 2CB.

Chopra is quality. He has vision to run in at goal and get in the right position something we have been lacking for a number of years. His touch is good, and with finishing like his would be sure to get goals and hope fully inporve our shots to goals ratio. Him and wickham up fornt could be an amazing strike partnerhsip.
He can also take freekicks. All round good player.

Rated.

I still think we will need creativity somewhere.

See the Bipolar brigade are out in force again, doom and gloom yesterday, the futures bright the next - I'd hate to be making your tea of an evening - why can't I have steak :o( I've made Sausages. Sausages? YAY :o).

He will be a good signing (if it happens - we shall see), but one part of a jigsaw which is missing some fairly large pieces.

We'll get there (hopefully), but one signing does not a summer make. It is, however, a start, well it will be when it actually goes through...!

This (fingers crossed) will be a great signing. A fully fit and in form Chopra could easily bag us 15+ goals next season! Sign him up!!
