Chopra at Portman Road Today
Chopra at Portman Road Today
Thursday, 9th Jun 2011 10:19

TWTD understands that Cardiff striker Michael Chopra will be at Portman Road today to complete the formalities of his move and if all goes well to sign on the dotted line. The Blues and Bluebirds have agreed a £1.5 million deal for the 27-year-old frontman.

Town, who previously targeted the former Sunderland and Newcastle man during Roy Keane’s time in charge, are understood to have turned their attention back to Chopra late last month after having a £2.3 million offer for Doncaster striker Billy Sharp turned down.

An initial offer of £1 million was turned down by the managerless Welsh club but a subsequent £1.5 million offer in the last couple of days was accepted by the play-off semi-finalists.

As is their usual policy, the club are remaining tight-lipped regarding the situation but we expect the former England U21 international to be at the club today to continue talking terms and to undergo a medical.

The one-time Newcastle trainee, who is contracted to Cardiff until 2012, scored 11 goals in 28 starts and 11 sub appearances during 2010/11 despite being in and out of the side due to injuries.

Overall, Chopra, who also had loan spells with Watford, Nottingham Forest and Barnsley before joining Cardiff for the first time from Newcastle for £500,000 in June 2006, has scored 65 goals in 142 starts and 20 sub appearances over his two permanent spells and two periods on loan with the Welsh side.

In July 2007 the 5ft 9in tall frontman joined Roy Keane's Premier League Sunderland for £5 million, rejoining Cardiff permanently for £4 million two years later after successful spells on loan in the second half of 2008/09.

Meanwhile, striker Connor Wickham suffered an ankle injury in training with the England U21s this morning after a tackle by Manchester United new recruit Phil Jones but the problem is not thought to be serious.

All for this move but at the risk of sounding negative i hope he has dealt with his gambling problem, then again on what we probably offered he hasn't room to fritter the money away, LOL !!

You morons who keep blabbing on about Clegg not screwing this one up...as you are opening your big fat useless mouths, try to provide actual evidence that he has cocked up anything....until you do shut the fook up!

Geting Chopra is what we need. I think we now need to focus on a centre back, a centre mid, and maybe a half decent winger? Plus a goalkeeper bu tthat goes without saying. Looking forward to what else is to come now!

Last season scored 11 times but got 7 yellow cards. Watching him play in the derby v Swansea he looked mentally unstable. In 2008 he checked into rehab including time at the Sporting Chance clinic. He had (according to press reports) relationship issues, anger issues and a gambling addiction. His son is called Sebastian Rocco (!) Thomas Chopra. Is he worth the risk never mind the fee and wages?

He did leave but just to put a bet on in the bookies. He is betting that another club come in for him who are not as tight fisted with their wages.

There's a wage structure for a reason don't forget - it's so we actually have a football club not a sinking ship!

Hear hear SuffolkBlue88. If Blackpool were able to cap wages at £10,000 a week for all squad players while in the Premier League, there's no reason why we should be willing to offer stupid wages.

Come to think of it, isn't giving players insane wages the main reason the 'ammers are now in the same league as us?

Seriously.... I've worn out the refresh button.

I need to see him holding a town shirt whilst sat in the directors box before I'll believe it!

Phil, please do all you can to get an update on this tonight. I really feel like this is such an important transfer for us. If we get him we can attract and pay for the right type of player. If we don't get him when we've also missed out on Derry, Coppinger and Austin when they've all been at Portman Road you have to seriously begin to think something is wrong at the club
