Jewell: Championship So Tough
Jewell: Championship So Tough
Friday, 17th Jun 2011 10:03

Town boss Paul Jewell assessed the Blues’ 2011/12 fixture list after its release earlier today and says it shows what a tough league the Championship is. The Blues manager begins his first full campaign at Town with an away game at Bristol City, followed by a visit by Hull City.

Jewell said: "It just proves what a tough league this is. Bristol had a slow start last season but picked up and were on a good run when we went down there and beat them.

"Hull were in the Premier League two years ago, Southampton have played at that level and are on a roll after coming up. Then you've got Leeds, Blackpool and Coventry, all who've been in the Premier League, after that.

"I know it's a cliché but it's true, every manager will tell you that every game in this division is tough.

"The fixtures coming out is an exciting time though. Managers, players, supporters, the media, they will all be looking at the games and counting down the days to August 6th."

Its understandable to see why some fans are negative we have underperformed over recent seasons, however that said if we consider that had we not given away so many late goals (barnsley at home for example) last season, and managed to turn a handful of draws into wins we would have been in the play offs if not the automatic places. This makes me think, although better players may be needed, it is small changes that need making not a huge overhaul. I believe that if we can have a happy dressing room with some experienced heads (ingermarsson, Chopra), with some good young flare (Wickham, Carson) we have every chance of reaching the play offs and dare I even say I would expect it. With a good run we could fair even better. I agree a new GK, an experienced, calm ball player in the centre and some tenacious talented youngster alongside will greatly strengthen our squad and clout in this league, so to invest in Koumas and to try take on loan a JJ Shelvey or player of similar ilk would be splendid, especially if someone of Scott Loach's or Andy Lonegan's stature is between the sticks.

As fans we need to get behind the boys from the off, make shed loads of noise, remain positive and do our part as I for one, am wholey confident this year could be our biggest push yet and something to get excited about. COYB

footyblue:

How many times do people have to explain - Paul Jewell did NOT say that! He said he HOPED to make a signing. Indeed, Ipswich made offers for a couple of players, which were turned down by their parent club.

The relegation run-in looks tough and it looks like it could be them or us at the last game of the season.

Totalblue, COULD NOT AGREE MORE!

Really looking forward to more business going on over the summer, pre season and then Bristol City on day one. I have real belief in PJ and this club again, and really don't get the negativity. Some ITFC fans are very pessimistic, get your arses off your computer chairs, down to PR next season and support/ believe in them!!!

Ultimately how well we do will depend on how successful PJ is at getting the team to gel, not on how many big name signings we make. Compare Cardiff and Norwich last season: Cardiff had plenty of footballing talent and admittedly did well for most of the season, but lost momentum and fell at the final hurdle.

Norwich, a side of comprising mainly league one players, took second place because (as much as I hate to admit it) they consistently played as a tight knit, well drilled team full of confidence.

Provided PJ makes the right selections in the transfer market and puts together a well balanced, organised and energetic side, there's no reason why we can't make a serious bid for promotion.

Town will have as good a chance (and ebtter than some) of achieving a top 6 place.

In Jewell , we finally have a "proper" manager. the players he is targetting will make a big difference to the underachievers Keane brought in. And Jewell will certainly get a squad that is willing to play for each other, which the two previous managers never managed to install.

Im more confident for this coming season than at any other time since Royal's tenure tbh !

RetroBlue. May I borrow your rose tinted glasses. If you actually believe what you have written may I have some of your medication also.
This club will not move forward until a proper Manager and a football-wise Chief Executive are appointed. The club continues to move backwards and has lost sight of the most important feature of any club - the fans!!!! 40 years of support and out!

The fans in general have had to endure all sorts of rubbish over the last several seasons and rightly remain pessimistic. However I am of the opinion that when PJ has conducted his summer business and we can see what the squad is looking like. THEN and only THEN should we perhaps be critical and start looking at our chances.

The league is stronger this time round than what it was last season,I believe many of us accept this. Be patient people for i sense that perhaps the best is yet to come.........

Tiggs: no great loss it seems then if that's your attitude.

What constitutes a 'proper manager' exactly. Jewell has only had two 'failures' and one of those wa at a club in serious decline and money problems. Nothing he's done so far at our club suggest he is anything other than a proper manager.

I agree - it is a tough league, but every manager in every league will be saying the same thing!

Far too early to predict where we may finish. Currently, despite two excellent signings, we still have an average squad - below average if we are all honest. There is still much to do, but PJ seems on top of it - the quality of the next signings will have a big impact. Will also depend on who leaves and whether they will be replaced in addition to the 5 new players.

No pain, no gain.

You've got to be in it to win.

Sorry guys but only being relistic

Yes we have PJ i feel is a good manager and think we will play better football than last year, However with PJ in charge we lost heavy to Norwich.Swansea and Leicester in the last few games leeking 13 goals, McAuley gone and most on here said was our best player, we have replaced him with Imagarsson, like for like
Back four has not really changed so can still see us leeking goals.

Chopra good goal scoring record (but so had Scotland at this level) think he will do well for us, However at the minute who is loading the gun for him, Bullard has gone and made such a big differance, Top goal scorer gone in Norris, cant see Leadbetter or Drury or Martin scoring 11.

There are 3 big sides coming down and the 3 from last year have a 12 million payment to come from the prem league, more than our transfer budget.

so at this point we look a mid table side the two we have signed will not turn us in to Champions, however good signings.

If we sign this 5 annd they are of quility then yes I can see us pushing for play off but 3 years of poor football and at the begining of every season i hear this is our year and it never is.

so not building up my hopes angain

I think we'll be a top 8 side this year, we've got a very difficult January by the looks of it. BTW who is this Billy Sharpe everyone is talking about?? I've heard of Billy SHARP but not Billy SHARPE.

Looking at the quality of the players joining and the proposed players possibly joining, why on earth are a lot of you so low about the coming season. yes there are some quality sides out there, but they have lost/bought in players, and they just may not work out for them, so whose to say that they are going to be the force they were. Is it possible that the signings we get in, might just make us on a parr with them, or dare I say it - better ! Who knows ? P.M.A.

Very similar teams within the championship, it's not just about signing new players but also getting the right team spirit and instilling confidence throughout the team. Hopefully PJ is the man to do this and hopefully the negative town fans can also raise their game and put some spirit back into PR, every little helps! Saying that, yes a few more quality signings wouldn't go amiss.

PJ only had half a season last season with players in the douldrums resetting there expectations and way of plying...so come on lets hand it to them.... he and the team done very well all things considered with where we ended up.....this season is going to be tough no doubt but with a bit of luck and talent and a whole season to get it right we can smuggle ourselves into the top six no doubt in my mind at all.

I have no idea what Towns chances are yet and wont until we have finished our transfer dealings.

At the moment we are a 'work in progress' so all this speculation is pointless.
