Bowyer Set to Sign Next Week
Bowyer Set to Sign Next Week
Wednesday, 6th Jul 2011 22:50

Former Birmingham midfielder Lee Bowyer looks set to complete his move to Portman Road next week. Talks with the one-time England international’s representatives have continued over the last few days with news of the Blues’ interest in the former Leeds, West Ham and Charlton man having broken over the weekend.

Earlier today, David Lee, an agent working for Skillequal, the company who represent Bowyer, appeared to hint that the 34-year-old was close to completing his switch to the Blues when he tweeted: “ITFC have a very interesting player signing soon!”

He later added: “Just to let the Ipswich fans asking I can't say who the player is but [the] deal should be done next week!”

Free agent Bowyer is currently understood to be on holiday abroad and could sign on the dotted line on his return, in time to be involved in next week’s two-game pre-season tour of Holland. TWTD understands that the Blues could also sign another player in time to make the trip across the North Sea.

Despite some fans reacting angrily to the news of Town’s move for the controversial Londoner, a TWTD poll currently sees 71% of fans backing his addition.

Daleyitfc - Pedant that I am -
a) Bowyer was not convicted of a 'racist assault' in relation to events at Mcdonalds, he was convicted of affray and fined.
b) He did not escape GBH because 'he paid for a cover up'. He was found not guilty at the criminal trial, civil proceedings then followed.

Dated but detailed article about Bowyer -

I'm sure there is no reason to be too concerned about this possible signing but...........

That's from 9 years ago and on blog from a Man U forum, who surprise surprise don't like an ex Leeds player.

If you had a relative who had been 'involved' in a incident with the exact circumstances as Bowyer and 10 years later they still had the exact same opinion as you do about him, would you not want people to let it go and give him/her a chance? I'm not sticking up for what he was to alleged to have done, clearly. What would you say then when you were accused of 'seeing no ships' or 'we don't like thugs unless they are our thugs' kind of attitude?

If we were speaking about a player who was convicted of something, spent time in jail or was in the Marlon King mold then I could see your point of view, but he just isn't.

I wish I could share the optimism about the possible signing of Lee Bowyer but unfortunately I don't. A 34 year old whose best days are probably now behind him and at best he will be a short term solution in midfield. I think history shows us that Premiership footballers who are relegated of this age are rarely going to perform to the standards previously. The championship is more physical too and let's hope he doesn't pick up too many yellow and red cards! - hope I'm wrong.

oh, and Daleyitfc,

You clearly didn't read the link someone posted the other day from the Daily Mail no less, about Bowyer, here it is

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1201758/Could-wrong-Lee-Bowyer

He's not saying he's never done anything wrong, but he's right he's no Joey Barton.

Why do you have the letters itfc in your username ? Surely only a Ipswich fan would use those letters .

Bowyer is far better than his reputation.
People should read this carefully or at least do the mathematics here generally.

"...in December 2001, Bowyer was cleared of both charges while Woodgate was convicted of affray and sentenced to community service."

I wonder if all of this would have been said if it were Woodgate we were in for?

Great Signing .... shame the minority of pr1cks will boo him because of something he did as a youngster.

Gutted - I for one think this will be a (wage) expensive flop of the highest nature.

I'm giving my honest opinion here....... I have never particularly liked the bloke, I think he's an "incident waiting to happen" but my feelings & thoughts about him personally would not allow me to slag him off, or boo him should he be wearing a town shirt. When someone pulls that Blue shirt on I support them, because my love is ITFC, not an individual, to use a quote, "No one person is bigger than the club" If Lee bowyer can help ITFC achieve our dream of playing Premiership football then great...... It doesn't mean I will particularly think anymore of him as a person, but I love ITFC & whilst he does his best for ITFC good luck to him.

I would never boo him if he wore the blue shirt, I just genuinely believe he'll be a flop.

I guess anyone we sign could turn out to be a flop, we've seen quite a few flops in recent seasons, but lets hope PJ can get the best out of ALL the players, I feel more positive about this season than any other in our recent history.

After all these posts and all the interest shown. I just hope he signs and this isn't just another 'linked story'.

Just to divert attention away from Lee B, didn't Carlos E have a brush with the law recently?

No No No !! Does anyone want to buy my ITFC shares? I feel like throwing them into the local recycling bin. Oh yes - I'll have the usual replies of 'good riddance' and will also have my allegiance to ITFC questioned. OK - you may have a right to question how much of an ITFC fan I am. I will only say that the first match I saw was Ipswich v Torquay in the 1950s when we won 6 - 0. And I have followed them through thick and thin since. Do we really want a player with the character of Bowyer at our club? I don't think so. I'd rather be back in the 3rd division south than have this man play in our shirt.

Heard the General interviewed on BBC R4 a couple of days ago. He talked about the Olympics and football. If Town do recruit this infamous thug, then I wonder how the General will explain to national listeners how he can on the one hand promote Olympic ideals and inclusivity whilst on the other employing a racist thug? Might be awkward for him.

And I wonder how the racist thug will get on with Carlos and Scotland and the Duke? Maybe not too bad, actually, because he seems to go for Asians first and foremost. Then again he did stamp on a black Arsenal player back in January, so who knows what might happen with this guy who has a job controlling himself?

But Town won't sign him, will they?

I tell ya what I can think of 2 games last season against the budgies I would have loved to have Bowyer in the side! from what I gather most clubs he has been at since Leeds the supporters were very wary but he won them all over very quickly, he has made mistakes getting involved with things more serious than perhaps you or I would ever do, yes he was cleared of the high profile offence and yes he is still stigmatised by it, the truth we will never know about the extent of Bowyers involvement that night, nor the motivation for the attack on that poor lad, so i think without the full truth, it is not our place to judge him on this. His association with ITFC will not darken our name, we will not fold as a club, we will continue, I hope he adds to the future success of the team whilst with us as I do with all new players.

He may add "steel" but he wont add pace or creativity. Not happy abt this and wont be swayed.A very dislikeable character who i will applaud if he scores but itll take a hell of a lot 4me to say i actually like him. Still hope to god it doesnt happen.

p.s Top marks to Christine-above.Your comment alone shows that u hav more passion and depth of feeling for the club than those who hide behind their blind devotion.
