Town Watching Spanish Defender
Town Watching Spanish Defender
Friday, 5th Aug 2011 22:45

Town have been keeping an eye on Real Zaragoza central defender Víctor Laguardia during the Spanish side’s tour of the UK. The La Liga club faced West Ham last Saturday, Norwich City on Wednesday and take on Wolves tomorrow.

The 21-year-old featured as a half-time sub in the 1-1 draw with the Canaries having been unused in the 2-0 defeat to the Hammers.Town are likely to be represented at Molineux on Saturday.

Laguardia came through the ranks at his local club, featuring for Zaragoza’s B side in the Tercera División before making his first team debut in a 1-0 victory over Tenerife in August 2009.

Two more senior appearances followed before the 6ft ½in tall right-sided defender suffered a training ground injury to his right knee which eventually required three operations and kept him sidelined for 17 months, including the whole of last season.

Prior to his lengthy spell out, Laguardia appeared for Spain at the 2009 U20 World Cup, playing three games as his side reached the round of the last 16. He was also a member of the U20 team which won the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Italy.

Caps at U21 level followed, including two in the qualifying phase for this summer’s European Championships.

Real Zaragoza are currently in the Spanish equivalent of administration with debts of £100 million and may have to offload players either on a permanent or loan basis.

Laguardia, good name for a defender.

He looks like this: www.fifa.com/u20worldcup/photo/111/147/0/picture.html#1111470

When Town were in administration we were forced to accept low bids for our stars, so as this guy has made only three appearances and had those operations hopefully we could get him cheaply.

Iv been hoping we look abroad a bit more especially with the highly inflated British market at the moment, look how close we were to getting iziguire when Jim was in charge and look at him now! They are there to be had. In this case obviously that's a pretty serious injury he had but hopefully youth would have helped his recovery.

Some sort of headline in the offing about "Laguardia's in the arrival lounge" or if he's sent off "Laguardia departure..."

After recent bad experience of a home sick foreign player with a knee injury, I would like to see him play a few games.

Loan with buy clause ?

Good enough and fit enough to get a game for Real Zaragoza in pre season, should be worth a punt ?

We need someone ahead of Smith and Delaney, urgently.
