Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Saturday, 26th Nov 2011 18:17

Blues boss Paul Jewell was left feeling “sick” after his side surrendered a 2-1 lead late on for the second week running. The Town manager again cited individual errors as his team conceded twice from set pieces, just as they did at Nottingham Forest a week ago.

Jewell said: “We didn’t play great, it was a nervous performance and in the situation we’re in that’s going to be the case.

“If we could have hung on for the win, it would have been great for the confidence but the goals we’re giving away from set plays and the third one are just beyond comprehension really. Sick is the right word.”

The Blues manager said players weren’t doing their jobs: “If there was never a mistake in a game, every game would end 0-0, but people have got their man to mark and they didn’t, basically. We got away with a couple in the first half as well.

“Individual errors cost us. What we’re trying to do from the throw-in [on the third], I just don’t know. From that, you get the feeling they’re going to score because that’s the way it is with us at the moment.

“We should have seen the last two games out. If we were mentally tough we should have got six points out of the last two games. But at the moment, because our confidence is so low, every time the ball goes in our box we’re nervous.”

Jewell said he brought on Jimmy Bullard late on to try to help see the game out: “We tried to play 4-3-3 and just shore it up a little bit, but we didn’t keep the ball, we didn’t pass the ball really, but even so, the goals we gave away didn’t come from that, they came from people not marking.”

One positive was Daryl Murphy’s performance and goal: “Considering he hasn’t played for a while, I thought Daryl did very well. His goal was great for him.”

The Town manager says skipper Grant Leadbitter is likely to miss out at Burnley on Tuesday, while keeper David Stockdale and Ibrahima Sonko are doubts: “Grant’s got a nasty groin injury, so that was why we had to make that substitution. We tried to put Reece in there but unfortunately we couldn’t keep them out.

“I would have thought Grant would be out for Tuesday. He limped badly into the dressing room so I would have thought so.

“Stocks did his shoulder in training on Monday afternoon. We don’t think it’s too serious but we don’t know if he’ll be available for Tuesday. Richard wasn’t to blame for any of the goals.

“Sonko’s only trained once with the first team [after his hamstring injury], so we’ll have to see how he comes through tomorrow and Monday.

“I think we’ll have to make one or two changes for injuries [at Burnley]. We’ll have to see how everyone is in the morning.”

Reading manager Brian McDermott admitted he wasn’t confident of a victory as the 90-minute mark approached: “I thought it was going to go against us again at 2-1 down with not long to go.

“I thought we started the game really well, the first 20 minutes. We didn’t get the goal we needed in the first half, then we gave a goal away for a set play which was disappointing. We got back into the game, then we gave another goal away that we’re not happy with.

“But I always feel that with the team that we’ve got and with the group of people that we’ve got, we can score late goals.

"When it got back to two-all, there’s a lot of difference between one point and three and we thought the third goal was a quality goal. I’m delighted with the win.”

With the transfer window looming it's squeaky bum time for PJ. But it's not about the quality of the squad. Its about the quality of management. Unfortunately for PJ he's got decent players, certainly decent enough for this division. But for whatever reason they won't perform for him. He has no excuses. He has nowhere to hide.

At last some consistency, 5 defeats in a row against mediocre opposition. Quite an achievement in a division where any team can beat anyone! Yet more goals conceded from set pieces and a quick counter attack. The third goal shows yet again why we need a proper holding midfield player who gets a nose bleed when he crosses the halfway line. At the moment we have a team devoid of confidence, a midfield that offers next to no protection to the back 4 but which also lacks any incisive passing, an inability to defend as a team or to deal with corners and free kicks. Whilst the manager can argue that the players have let him down by individual errors again, this is his team. He has signed 14 players and had plenty of time with them on the training ground but we have gone backwards.

The thing is Jewell can hardly be blamed for the last 2 results... 2-1 up with not long left its down to the players to keep focused and grind out the result, but both times they've lost all concentration and were caught sleeping. Jewell can't have any control over that and I feel sorry for him at the moment. As for 'substitutions lost the game for us' If it wasn't for substitute Lee Martin we wouldn't have scored our second goal, so find a new excuse. However we can't defend set pieces at all so Jewell does need to get that sorted as soon as possible.

I can't stress enough how important it is that we be patient with Jewell, after all he didn't get Wigan promoted first season either... But the guy hasn't even been in the job for a year yet and if we sack him and bring in god knows who then we're just going even further backwards and will just make things worse. Oh and when I say be patient I don't mean wait until the next time we lose and everyone bitches again.

JEWELL IN!

In some ways thank god we are not pushing for promotion . If we played at old trafford then with team losing 9 nil wouldn't look so bad

We have players who are (dum footballer's no brains for the game) a manager who has not got a clue, worst team in many years, people are saying poor old ipswich up the road in Nor;;;; Ha Ha Ha.

Football managers are paid to win matches, end of. The buck stops with him. When was the last time we lost 5 on the bounce? It's not just the defeats its the number of goals conceded.

Looking at the next 3 matches where will the points come from and can't see no mote than 16,000 at the next game.

PJ wasn't' my first choice but have supported him. Have a feeling that Mr Evans will lose patience in the next month.

On paper we have some decent individuals but again have a manager who can't get gel a team and get the most out of them. We are where we are because we have no spine and we concede far too many

If we lose next 2 could be curtains for PJ. Worrying times ahead.

Same crap different week.

PJ done very well to keep us up last season thats the only success we have had so far. We are not progressing once again season after season. One of these years if we are not careful we will be playing in league 1. I really hope we never but enough is enough. For me if we lose another 2 on the bounce will PJ Walk?
Tick Tock Tick Tock Tick Tock........

You lot need to calm down! What good is sacking pj going to do? Conceding in the last few minutes doesn't have anything to do with him - players need to stand up and wear our shirt with pride. Both of the las two games we should have won but we haven't. It's a bad run, there's no denying that but jewell out so called fans need to get a grip of your selves. Onwards and upwards from here. Cmon town!

J4ck22. His crap substitutions DID cost us the game. We played poorly all match but at least Chopra was chasing Readings back four. When he went off, it invited them foward as ALL our players sat too deep. I was all for giving PJ time, but today, i,ve had enough & feel if Mr Evans doesn,t get in a damn good replacement ASAP, we will be staring down the barrel of a gun very soon.

I was going to lambast Jewell for another shocker but i have had a couple of glasses of wine (medicinal of course) and am now pointing my finger at the players, it takes strong experienced players to see out a result, qualities we should have in shed loads, so why is this still happening to us. We are not playing a squad of kids...stand up and be counted you muppets you are going to get your manager the sack.

Unquestionably Jewell needs more time. A year in a management job just isn't enough. Allow him to try to sort it out. If we're here in a years time still underperforming then yes, it's probably time to have a change but not yet.
Admittedly, Jewell has signed the majority of the players which he puts on the field every saturday and he does work with them in training but at the end of the day nobody can say they were "bad" signings as everyone assumed they would be good:
Bullard - "The prodigal son", everyone wanted back and has underperformed since being back.
Chopra - The signing us fans have prayed for, for the last 2 or 3 seasons and hasn't exactly set the world alight yet.
Emmanuel Thomas - A very promising young spark who was an exciting signing again but has underperformed.
Stockdale - England's number 3, a touch of real class we all know but has been at fault a fair few times.
Bowyer - A Premier league class act who we all thought would bolster our midfield no end, however it seems that the championship isn't the league for him and is maybe more suited to the premier league style of play.

I could go on. My point is that although we complain that it's "Jewell's team" of which he's assembled, we all wanted these players too and regardless of how much scouting goes into watching them, we all know they're class acts. I know Jewell is the one training them (along with other coaching staff) but at the end of the day, as class players which they are, they should be performing a whole lot better than they are.

Jewell is the right man for the job as we stand and deserves a good chance. The team is not going to get any better with the constant sound of booing as soon as they walk off the pitch or the despairing loud groan when somebody gives the ball away. In times like these we have to get behind "our" football team, give them some confidence from the terraces and that way they will play better football.

Lets all get behind OUR team and OUR manager and ultimately OUR club and see us get back to where we want to be, the negativity is not needed.

alex 12345 i agree with everything you have posted but dont you think its hard not to be a little bit negative sometimes, Keane got sacked for what i can see is less than what Jewell has done and compounding matters is what the scum up the road are doing.

Not as sick as I am after enduring a third straight 3-2 defeat, at least you arent paying to watch PJ.
'Individual errors' by you. Big big mistake taking Chops off and bringing Bullard on to settle for 2-1 when you should have worked out we cannot defend.

Least my non league club chelmsford are doing well in the blue square south and home to macclesfield in the fa cup and beat woking in the fa trophy who are top of the league. And chelmsford are 14 games unbeaten. Non league is sometimes better value

How many more inept performances do we have to watch ?
How much more rubbish do we have to listen to from PJ ?
He is the manager, he is fully accountable, this is his team, his signings and his tactics and quite frankly we are going backwards very quickly under his leadership.
On Tuesday it will probably be our 6th consecutive defeat - will ME then decide enough is enough ?

We have clearly not got the right players - we need a centre back and a right back and a holding midfield player. If Jewell cannot get those players in he should move on - unles that is he is being ham strung by Clegg and ME

Jesus H Christ we have the backbone of a jellyfish at the mo. I thought we would loose so no suprise for me I actually tipped us to loose, its the manner that kills me. We have no defence but in truth we´ve not had one for a decade or so. I dont believe a revolving door is the best thing regarding managers, but its a fine line as to whether or not Jewell has "lost the dressingroom" or not.

I think you are all missing the point. Our current squad simply is not good enough even if we had Alex Ferguson at the helm. I respect an owner that grows cash at a money pit like football but we have been a selling club for some years now. Loans and Horney an is the best Mr Jewel can expect, I don't confess to understand the financials but spending 3m and getting 8m from Wickham should have given us scope but wages and debts clearly rule. Burnley Barnsley s**t if we can't beat these northerner average teams then Colchester here we come. Maybe it will be ahold thing.

Absolute disgrace Wright coming in ahead of ALB, what sort of message does this send to players waiting their chance. ALB has trained all season waiting for Stockwell to get injured and this happened. Absolute disgrace.

At least ALB may have cut out one of the unopposed crosses and may not have let the shot go between his legs.

i am not one for sacking managers, dont think thats the answer, but i cant defend him either, this is now his mess, he created it and should be given the time to fix it.. Paul Jewell has for me made some very strange decisions and the strangest one is leadbitter as captain, i cant think of one reason why he is captain???? think of the great captains we have had down the years , guys... i can remember being at hillsborough in 1986 when we had to win to stay up, history will tell you we were relegated, but my main memory was seeing terry butcher running from the pitch in tears... that wont be leadbitter in may, he is off to the highest bidder but will stay if no one wants him... i dont wish harm on anyone, but i believe his injury is a blessing in disguise.. Imho, i think we should make a centre back captain, make collins captain and then sign him on a permanent deal and i think this is where , jewell should start, anyone agree.. any other suggestions for captain? ffs we have to have a captain who really wants to be a town player...COYb
