Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Saturday, 26th Nov 2011 18:17

Blues boss Paul Jewell was left feeling “sick” after his side surrendered a 2-1 lead late on for the second week running. The Town manager again cited individual errors as his team conceded twice from set pieces, just as they did at Nottingham Forest a week ago.

Jewell said: “We didn’t play great, it was a nervous performance and in the situation we’re in that’s going to be the case.

“If we could have hung on for the win, it would have been great for the confidence but the goals we’re giving away from set plays and the third one are just beyond comprehension really. Sick is the right word.”

The Blues manager said players weren’t doing their jobs: “If there was never a mistake in a game, every game would end 0-0, but people have got their man to mark and they didn’t, basically. We got away with a couple in the first half as well.

“Individual errors cost us. What we’re trying to do from the throw-in [on the third], I just don’t know. From that, you get the feeling they’re going to score because that’s the way it is with us at the moment.

“We should have seen the last two games out. If we were mentally tough we should have got six points out of the last two games. But at the moment, because our confidence is so low, every time the ball goes in our box we’re nervous.”

Jewell said he brought on Jimmy Bullard late on to try to help see the game out: “We tried to play 4-3-3 and just shore it up a little bit, but we didn’t keep the ball, we didn’t pass the ball really, but even so, the goals we gave away didn’t come from that, they came from people not marking.”

One positive was Daryl Murphy’s performance and goal: “Considering he hasn’t played for a while, I thought Daryl did very well. His goal was great for him.”

The Town manager says skipper Grant Leadbitter is likely to miss out at Burnley on Tuesday, while keeper David Stockdale and Ibrahima Sonko are doubts: “Grant’s got a nasty groin injury, so that was why we had to make that substitution. We tried to put Reece in there but unfortunately we couldn’t keep them out.

“I would have thought Grant would be out for Tuesday. He limped badly into the dressing room so I would have thought so.

“Stocks did his shoulder in training on Monday afternoon. We don’t think it’s too serious but we don’t know if he’ll be available for Tuesday. Richard wasn’t to blame for any of the goals.

“Sonko’s only trained once with the first team [after his hamstring injury], so we’ll have to see how he comes through tomorrow and Monday.

“I think we’ll have to make one or two changes for injuries [at Burnley]. We’ll have to see how everyone is in the morning.”

Reading manager Brian McDermott admitted he wasn’t confident of a victory as the 90-minute mark approached: “I thought it was going to go against us again at 2-1 down with not long to go.

“I thought we started the game really well, the first 20 minutes. We didn’t get the goal we needed in the first half, then we gave a goal away for a set play which was disappointing. We got back into the game, then we gave another goal away that we’re not happy with.

“But I always feel that with the team that we’ve got and with the group of people that we’ve got, we can score late goals.

"When it got back to two-all, there’s a lot of difference between one point and three and we thought the third goal was a quality goal. I’m delighted with the win.”

Irishtim...... I loved Burley and Holland when we were involved in being one of the best sides in the Division 1 promotion etc but what would they bring? They would bring passion back for sure but what about results and building a decent side? Burley was great his era was the best Iv'e known as a fan but since he moved on from us he has'nt been so successful?

Garv - don't you think you should be asking yourself 'who's the one without a clue' ??
- I suggest you do just that.

The more I think about this Burley / Holland scenario - the more I like it.

Long shot I know - but that is a partnership that could really work.
And no one could ever doubt there committment to the Club - REAL IPSWICH PEDIGREE providing a good sound base to start with !!!!!!.

WHAT A DEPRESSING PLACE PORTMAN RD IS TO BE THESE DAYS!
IT MAKES YOU THINK WHAT THE HELL GOES ON IN TRAINING.
I THINK FOR THE LONG TERM FUTURE IT MIGHT NOT BE SUCH A BAD THING GETTING RELEGATED, AT LEAST IT WILL PUT A STOP TO SIGNING PAST IT JOURNEY MEN FROM THE PREM AND GET PLAYERS IN THAT HAVE GOT A HUNGER TO SUCCEED !

Holland has NO experience and hasn't even expressed any sort of interest in becoming a coach/manager. Love the bloke but talk of him coming in is ridiculous.

Burley is a legend but what has he done in 9 years?

Curbishley and Holland would be better imo. On current form we are relegation material and biggest concern is that we concede so easily.

Burnley away is going to be a tough away match and am sure if fit Austin will be looking to show what we missed.

Keane couldn't get us out of the rut but can PJ?

Next 2 games are crucial for season and his future. Last 2 managers have talked a good game but not delivered and PJ will not be given the patience of the fans keane did.

Something is clearly wrong at ITFC.What on earth is going on?
Have absolutely no faith in PJ or his tactics. There is no denying we have some very good players but we have a manager who clearly cannot organise or motivate the team to play to their undoubted potential. Why on earth haven't we sorted the defence out yet and please PJ stop signing players who are past it and injury prone.? Sonko was injury prone before he came to ITFC so its a shame but no surprise he starts so few games. Also the team have been crying out for pace and width for months and months and yet PJ only seems to have noticed this recently?
Ipswich have always had a great academy with good young players coming through but we now have a manager who would rather buy has been's with no passion for the club rather than bring through the youth. He's only now realising Carson's potential?
Excuses ,excuses and publicly slagging off players is not good enough PJ.Your the man in charge and you have brought many of these players to the club so either sort this out soon or resign and at least give us a chance of staying in the Championship. The loyal ITFC fans deserve much more than this.COYB.

What on earth is going on at PR, yet again another abject display, Jewell says he feels sick well try paying for it!! I am sick and tired of the excuses, no matter what is said at the press conference and what will be done to address these issues, nothing changes in fact it is worsening. The last two games are amogst thw worst I have seen in all the years of following Town. The worry is that I can't see where and how we are going to improve after all it isn't as if we can call in any of our own younger, hungrier players, so we will have to rely on has beens, loanees it is just not good enough - don't get me wrong I wanted both Keane or Jewell to succeed and I am bitterly disappointed but surely the problems at Town are deeper, Clegg - what a waste of space, pity he wasn't called in to set up a running track at some olympic venue!! As fans we have been shortchanged for sure and if Town want to avoid League One football then something drastic has to change and soon!!!!

At the risk of stating the obvious, all good teams are built on a sound defence. We have the worst in the league. We are not going to win matches (well not many) when we concede three goals a game. Things look better with Sonko playing, but with his age and fitness he is not a solution. Apparently, the club which produced the likes of Beattie, Butcher and Osman can't produce a decent young centre back. I suspect that Mr Jewell will be given until the end of the season and that we will survive (just).

.....Now everything in perspective......Thoughts go to Gary Speed's family.....who cares if our only worries are that we have lost a couple of football matches!!!

Well the issue ought to include the individual management issue of appalling substitutions and tactics. Nothing wrong with Chopra coming off but with 4 4 2 working ok then it must have been Scotland for him. As soon as it was 1 up front it simply was a case of backs the wall. We struggle to defend at the best of times so attack has to be the way to go. We played bad, long ball, non passing football so to be 2 - 1 up was a miracke in itself. Bullard is either unfit or just taking the money, Edwards is out of his depth, Leadbitter (who has a half decent gane for him) cannot generally pass. JET is lazy and looks a total flop, Inga wiling but aging. Collins decent but not ours. Andrews seemingly waiting to find anothe club. The fans disillusioned. The club has had the heart and passion ripped out of it, not just by PJ but moreso by Keane and the new regime. On a positive, Chopra gives 100 per cent and is class. Josh Carson has to be an automatic choice, knows where the goal is and can switxh flanks. Darryl Murphy looks a handful at this level. Lee Martin looked positive and direct when he came on and finally Richard Wright finally a keeper shouting at his defence. More than once he had to physically move defenders into the right position at a corner.

irishtim - you're absolutely right - from somewhere, somehow, we much get the unique 'Ipswich Pedigree' back into our Club.

Many people, I am sure, will be able to relate to this.

Otherwise - I think we've had it big time.

No to Dave Jones!

Yes please to:
1. Alan Curbishley
2. Martin O'Neill (can't see this happening)
3. Burley/Holland

But I'd still give PJ time, see if he can make further bad signings in the January transfer window.

TownOnTheUp added 17:32 - Nov 27
Garv, what has Burley done since he left us?

I'll run you through it. He kept Derby in the Championship in his first season with them, then with no money turned them into the 4th best team in the division. He then took Hearts to the top of the SPL before he resigned. He took Southampton to the play-off final in 2007. As manager of Scotland he won only 3 out of 14 and they failed to reach the World Cup Qualifying play-offs, but only after a 1-0 defeat against Holland and of course Iwelumo's miss from 3 yards against Norway. His latest managerial job, with a pretty poor Palace side, was played 25, won 7, drew 5, lost 13. He was sacked on New Years Day 2011.

Now, a bit inconsistent maybe, but no more than Jewell and we seemed to have no problem employing him.

Still don't think he'd come back though.

i think burley would be here in 2mins if he was asked....never should of sacked him in the first place. He loves it here and his passion alone would see us through this dire state of affairs
