Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Saturday, 26th Nov 2011 18:17

Blues boss Paul Jewell was left feeling “sick” after his side surrendered a 2-1 lead late on for the second week running. The Town manager again cited individual errors as his team conceded twice from set pieces, just as they did at Nottingham Forest a week ago.

Jewell said: “We didn’t play great, it was a nervous performance and in the situation we’re in that’s going to be the case.

“If we could have hung on for the win, it would have been great for the confidence but the goals we’re giving away from set plays and the third one are just beyond comprehension really. Sick is the right word.”

The Blues manager said players weren’t doing their jobs: “If there was never a mistake in a game, every game would end 0-0, but people have got their man to mark and they didn’t, basically. We got away with a couple in the first half as well.

“Individual errors cost us. What we’re trying to do from the throw-in [on the third], I just don’t know. From that, you get the feeling they’re going to score because that’s the way it is with us at the moment.

“We should have seen the last two games out. If we were mentally tough we should have got six points out of the last two games. But at the moment, because our confidence is so low, every time the ball goes in our box we’re nervous.”

Jewell said he brought on Jimmy Bullard late on to try to help see the game out: “We tried to play 4-3-3 and just shore it up a little bit, but we didn’t keep the ball, we didn’t pass the ball really, but even so, the goals we gave away didn’t come from that, they came from people not marking.”

One positive was Daryl Murphy’s performance and goal: “Considering he hasn’t played for a while, I thought Daryl did very well. His goal was great for him.”

The Town manager says skipper Grant Leadbitter is likely to miss out at Burnley on Tuesday, while keeper David Stockdale and Ibrahima Sonko are doubts: “Grant’s got a nasty groin injury, so that was why we had to make that substitution. We tried to put Reece in there but unfortunately we couldn’t keep them out.

“I would have thought Grant would be out for Tuesday. He limped badly into the dressing room so I would have thought so.

“Stocks did his shoulder in training on Monday afternoon. We don’t think it’s too serious but we don’t know if he’ll be available for Tuesday. Richard wasn’t to blame for any of the goals.

“Sonko’s only trained once with the first team [after his hamstring injury], so we’ll have to see how he comes through tomorrow and Monday.

“I think we’ll have to make one or two changes for injuries [at Burnley]. We’ll have to see how everyone is in the morning.”

Reading manager Brian McDermott admitted he wasn’t confident of a victory as the 90-minute mark approached: “I thought it was going to go against us again at 2-1 down with not long to go.

“I thought we started the game really well, the first 20 minutes. We didn’t get the goal we needed in the first half, then we gave a goal away for a set play which was disappointing. We got back into the game, then we gave another goal away that we’re not happy with.

“But I always feel that with the team that we’ve got and with the group of people that we’ve got, we can score late goals.

"When it got back to two-all, there’s a lot of difference between one point and three and we thought the third goal was a quality goal. I’m delighted with the win.”

alex12345 Agreed, but it's difficult to take.

We need Sonko back desperately, or sign someone similar. Nearly all the goals are coming from free headers

I agree with alex12345, the fans need to back the team for the full ninety minutes, and save moaning for later. Also agree with alfromcol, if that happened to me at work I would tell them tio stuff it. Wright was an early bloomer anyway. I didnt want him back. And I didnt want Bullard either, who has gone into full on could not care mode as the hull fans said he would once he has a new contract.

Year after year we nvr seem to go n e where other than backwards!! Been like this since mighty joe left since then we've seen three different manages no matter who ever has managed the team since joe they've all been hopeless at building a good back four, at present we have one gd back and that's cresswell, year b4 last big mac, we need to build from the back!! FOR ME it's an old record on repeat magilton keane now jewell keep playing it ,sort it out u over payed pratts and sort it out management. If my team at work performed like u lot do we'd all find ourselfs out of work!

Mr Jewell take a leaf out of Gordon Strachan's book, you are not up to it so rip up your contract and walk away with dignity. You could also go back to punditary just like Gordon and we wouldn't have to pay you any compensation!

Attendances dwindling, players aimless, manager clueless, club we all love once again pointless.

This death by a thousand cuts cannot go on.

Time for ME to dust off and re-oil the firing pistol.

Why is this happening!?!?! We were 2 nil up! And what in the last 20 or so minutes we let 3 goals!!! It's not good enough! We've lost like 4 on the trot now! I'm sick and tired of watching our results and seeing us slip further and further down the table! Its a habit which i'm sure all town fans can agree when i say we need to get into the routine of winning!!! Paul Jewell pick us up! All the players need to start playing for the team! Earn the ridiclous amount of money they get paid week in and week out! Win or bloody lose! Get a grip town!
I don't think we're going up until we go down tbh! SORT IT OUT! Another crappy season yet again! And we'll give PJ the benifit like we always do after the first season! Wich is right, but if he can't get us higher then 12th this year, i don't believe there's any hope for us! Unless ME can scrape up £10 million next year!

'I was going to lambast Jewell for another shocker but i have had a couple of glasses of wine (medicinal of course) and am now pointing my finger at the players, it takes strong experienced players to see out a result, qualities we should have in shed loads, so why is this still happening to us. We are not playing a squad of kids...stand up and be counted you muppets you are going to get your manager the sack.'

Brilliant post!

Feel's a bit like the dark lord is still hanging over us! Another strange decision from left field with RW playing instead of ALB and other changes means an unsettled team.

Changing the team constantly does no one any good (apart from opponents). PJ is becoming as popular as a traffic warden that shops at Littlewoods.

Note to RSPCA - Cat population in Suffolk is taking too many kickings.

Now Mrs PJ

So Roy Keane wasn't so bad after all.... let face it guys... we are mid table team or below now. We can't continue to sack managers !!

I thought we were doing o'k today until Jewell took Chops off, he and Murphy were at least holding the ball up and and trying to bring our midfield into the game and defending from the front.
As soon as Bullard came on he was running about like a headless chicken putting pressure on our defence, and our defence fell down like a pack of cards.
This was a game we should have won Reading looked a very poor side who's only tactic was to give the ball to Kebe.

'When was the last time we lost 5 on the bounce?'
Are some of you kidding? Do you not remember Keane last year losing 6/7 in a row around this time? Short memories! This IS NOT worse than Keane! I even heard some d*ckhead chanting his name when the third went in, idiot idiot idiot!

The whole thing is freeking pointless. Next week will be the same and the week after (last minute goals and embarassing losses) confidence goes lower. Whats next dumped out of the FA Cup by Chelmsford City at home after leading 2-0 in the 95 minute, 3 goals in 96,97 and 98? In front of 4,000. Lose away to Burnley 6-0, bottom by Christmas...it can happen

I never post Keane out but I am going public in saying Jewell out.

This has Peter Grant and the Scum written all over it!

If Jewell is in charge in January, we will be relegated. This is so bad, I am losing all faith more rapidly than I ever thought I could. I love this football club more than anything and I don't usually cuss but this is worse than the Duncan era.

Evans - sort it out. If I made 5 terrible mistakes in 5 weeks at work, i'd be sacked.

Jewell, please walk and take your totally incompetent (apart from Webster) back room staff with you....

I just dont know what the answer is anymore watching this today. I would/could say Sonko missing is key but I'd hardly say he's Bobby Moore!!
Its so easy to blame Jewell and get rid but in the last 5 years the club has never given numerous managers as much funding for players only to then produce the most mediocre seasons in the 25 years of watching the club and I include the duncan era in that. But some of the truly and utterly appalling performances/results in the last 2 years have put it on a whole new level on the crapmeter with today another example. To be honest it was hardly a classic to watch especially first half when I would have rather have been visiting my knitnurse. Only positives today was Chopra who I thought was excellent and seeing Richard Wright back in between the sticks.
