O'Connor on Trial at Southend
O'Connor on Trial at Southend
Wednesday, 4th Jan 2012 09:24

Left-back or midfielder Shane O’Connor has joined League Two Southend United on trial. The 21-year-old returned from his one-month loan spell at Port Vale at the weekend without making a first-team appearance for the Valiants.

Irish U21 international O’Connor, whose Town contract is up at the end of the season, is very much out of Paul Jewell’s plans with his only appearance under the current manager a 16-minute cameo as a sub in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final at Arsenal last January.

One-time Liverpool trainee O'Connor is set to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Colchester today.

he couldn't break into the port vale first team yet.people are saying he should start for us!!! whats going on with some of you??

bedsitfc - thank God someone else sees this for the reality rather than some unearthed gem who hasn't been given a chance!!

He couldn't get in a mid table L2 side who were struggling with injuries. Says all you need to know!

Wake me up when there is some decent news, Like Jewell and Clegg sacked!

Appreciate that if he can't get into Port Vale first team, then clearly not good enough for us. But then there must have been a dramatic decline in his form, because on his earlier performances for us, he really did look a good prospect. How bizarre.

Another player left to rot confidence disappears. Typical pj imo

He should be judged on what he did for US not what he didn't do for another club!! he's 21 for goodness sake, bags of potential, needs to get fit and be handled propley

None of us see him in training every day - he could have the worst attitude ever so is why he isn't picked?

If he was that good though he wouldn't be offered on trial to Southend.

Keane dropped him, PJ clearly didnt rate him and a league two manager didnt rate him enough to play him, come on wake up and smell the coffee you moaners! Dont forget he showed a little flare in a very poor Keane team on one or two occaisions thats about it. As for Smith coming in, is he really? you know that for sure do you Lord_mac, not sure lazy media?

He's probably thinks that it would be nice to go and play for a team that are winning,.Can't blame him for that.

The rate we're going he'll be playing against us next season anyway..And they'll probably win

So Port Vale don't want him nor did Crawley town and Liverpool let him go for free

bet the liverpool fans are going on about how their coaching staff let another promising youngster go and spent 35 millions on a striker who crap.

Put O'Connor in and top six here we come

Only one person with the worst attitude ever PJ - get rid of him and get in a decent manager who will give o'connor a chance along with some of the others before they all walk and all we are left with is the overpaid OAP's

So where would you play him if we keep him? Left back and drop Cresswell another promising youngster? Or left midfield, where many of you were calling for Carson to play, i.e. keep another promising youngster out of the team

yorksblue added 11:56 - Jan 4
Well, I look forward to us playing against him next season!

Please say Kane Ferdinand is coming the other way?

blueherts added 12:16 - Jan 4
So League Two teams dont fancy him - yet he is the answer - Maybe , just maybe he has a bad attitude - been known before , young kid with good talent but has wrong attitude . Maybe he turns up late every day , there must be something wrong cos if he was as good as people on here lead us to believe then he would be playing - Looked ok in the snow against Leicester , maybe we will pick him when there is 4 inches of snow on the pitch - move on - Cresswell , Carson and Whight are ahead of him

WTF is going on here. Why is O'Connor not being used when the little we have seen of him albeit in the snow says he has potential. Why won't Jewell or Clegg or someone at Portman Road tells us the truth.

All blaming Jewell, but I don't remember Keane who brought him playing him that often either. Really was never that good, poor signing and couldn't get into a League 2 team. Just be fair, poor signing who didn't cut it.

Team vs Hull - nothing to lose
Cropper , Cresswell , Smith , Sonko , Ainsley , Carson , Hyam , Martin , JET , Murray , Scotland - Lawrence , Whight , Wright , Drury , Chopra

I've been impressed by O'Connor every time I've seen him in a Town shirt but if he is good enough for our first team as many posters claim why wasn't he starting for Vale?

buryblue77 added 12:43 - Jan 4
I can't believe this, although our situation is dire at the moment some people will take any opportunity to knock Jewell and co. There is clearly something about the lads ability and or attitude that managers don't like as I'm sure he'd have pushed his way into the Port Vale side if he were that good, despite this some still think he should be starting for us, these ARE the same people who would criticise both him and Jewell if he did play and say had an absolute stinker!

Sell Kennedy instead. Clegg Out. Not Jewell.

Keaneish added 13:53 - Jan 4
Well if illustrious managers like Jewell, Keane and Adams don't rate him...he must be rubbish!

This is a mistake.
