Town Linked With New Move for Pearce
Town Linked With New Move for Pearce
Wednesday, 14th Mar 2012 09:26

Town have been linked with a renewed move for Portsmouth central defender Jason Pearce, one of the three Pompey players targeted in January. A return for Pearce, 24, would come as little surprise with chief executive Simon Clegg recently telling TWTD that the Blues’ attempt to sign some or all of the trio was still a "live issue".

Last week Town were understood to have been offered Joel Ward by Portsmouth, who are desperate of offload players to raise cash, while keeper Stephen Henderson, the third January target, joined West Ham on an initial loan earlier in the week.

The Hammers and Southampton have also been linked with moves for Pearce, who looks likely to leave Fratton Park before next Thursday’s loan deadline.

Although the transfer window is closed, clubs can sign players on loan with already agreed permanent deals then formalised in the summer.

Portsmouth refused bids from Town and other clubs for Pearce in January, although the Blues’ offers for Ward and Henderson were accepted, only for the deals to break down due to the players’ wage demands.

Elsewhere, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Arran Lee-Barrett, Josh Carson and Carlos Edwards were the players involved in yesterday’s photo shoot and filming to promote next season’s two new kits, which are being released in April.

Meanwhile, Town players past and present will be involved in the club’s golf day at Hintlesham today.

I hope Lee Martin wears his safety goggles at Hintlesham!

We are unlikely to offer anything, we all know he will end up at Saints or W Ham

If he was that good, would they be in the bottom three? (likewise Ward and Henderson)

offered Ward - did we say no then?

Hmmm "offered Ward" ... I wonder if his wage demands have changed?

All very interesting. Clearly we won't go down or up this season. Therefore, rather than rely on loans we should stick with what we have - unless a permanent deal is 100% likely. However, Pearce is an excellent player and despite a decent run of results, the reality is we are sitting 16th in the league. This is because PJ got it completely wrong August through to 31 January. I suspect there will be better clubs - with something to play for - after him.

Would be disappointed if we rejected the chance to bring in Ward - on a full time basis.

If we can't sign players that are being off loaded by a desperate club then I don't think we are really in the market to sign anyone.

If Pearce is going ot West Ham to join Stephenoin then is this realy a story?

Can't really seeing him getting in west ham or saints team. I would really like him here, definitely a future captain!

walberswick - Stephenoin ?? what position does he play?

Saffronblue, They're only in the bottom three after the points deduction and consequently losing all of their best players on loan deals. Before that they were above us in the table, and have conceded significantly less goals, so i would say they are better than what we already have.

I don't really understand the comments stating 'If he was that good, would they be in the bottom three?'. Football is made up of 11 players and so it is quite possible to have 2/3/4 really good players and for the rest to be relegation fodder.Matt Holland is a good Town example..as is Terry Butcher

Reuser31 - totally agree but come on it was an opportunity to be negative, and some people cant ignore those.

I don't know why we keep faffing around just go and sign the two players and save us the long drawn out summer of disappointment with no signings. We only need a bit of tweaking and Ward and Pearce would go a long way in that direction.

The Ward deal had to be done by the weekend according to the earlier report.
If we were offered Ward and have said no was it due to his wage demands or the fact that we were just buying people because of our league position.

Would prefer Murphy to Ward as he has done a great job for the team, If we did buy Ward and Murphy I could see Scotland going as Murphy could play up front if need be

Doubt he would go to Southampton given extreme rivalry between them and pompey.

Deffo captain material.

Let's ALL look to the future.

Jas: nice to see you couldn't post without having a dig at PJ. Nice one! Thoguh I do note that you've changed your stance to how he got it wrong until end of Jan. Are you finally beginning to turn?

Anyway, I hope this deal isn't just a rumour, would be a good signing. As well as Tommy and Delaney have done I think we all know that they're not the long-term answer to our problems.

What would happen if we signed Pearce on loan with the paperwork done for when the transfer window re-opens and he breaks his leg in the loan period. Could we then pull out of the deal?

Tough decision this one, join a mid table champ club where you will be playing regularly or join a top champ club who are going into the prem next season and then probably sit on the bench and play in cup matches only. If he joins Southampton its a bit like someone from Ipswich joining Norwich however this does mean he doesn't have to move away from friends/family so probably the most likeliest destination.

re: Saffronblue

If they're that good why are they bottom three? Maybe because of their points deduction, they've conceded about 20 goals less than us this season, their defence isn't too bad

His agent will be trying to do deals with clubs with a chance of going up.
His plan -sign up for Southampton etc, play well, go up, get promotion bonus, sign a premier contract - set up for life.
Or sign for Ipswich who have played well about 15 times in the last 4 seasons.

its a tricky choice he faces

This is another story with about as much credence as the one about Ward being at PR for talks, just more media gossip and it is clear he could do better than come to Ipswich, he would also command a decent fee in the summer, at least 1.5 - 2M and we don't have that sort of money so just another story with absolutely no substance, if he was available for 50K them maybe.
