Ward to Move By Midweek
Ward to Move By Midweek
Monday, 21st May 2012 10:23

Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch says Joel Ward is yet to make up his mind where he will be playing his football next season but expects a decision by Wednesday. The Blues, Leeds, Blackpool, Burnley, Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday have all targeted Pompey’s versatile 22-year-old defender or midfielder.

Birch said: “We are still waiting for news on that situation — there has been no further movement.

“Obviously I cannot be certain when it will go through but I would have thought it could be around the middle of this week.

"It has taken time. We have all been waiting on this one, hopefully it can go through soon.”

The interested parties are understood to have agreed a fee of around £450,000 with the administrator.

Unconfirmed rumours yesterday claimed Town were winning the race for the one-time Bournemouth loanee.

It's a done deal. It's in the bag then. So he must be off to Leeds.

Don't think I can remember us being involved in such a drawn out deal for a long time.

The amount we have had to hear about Ward is rediculous!!! If we do get him he had better turn out to be the next Cafu!!! In all seriousness I think he would make us more solid at right back while still adding an attacking threat. Would be good to get in Keogh and St Ledger at cb too. Playing Hyam in the holding role would also make us far tighter at the back. Gallagher on the wing (seems to get double figures most seasons, and has provided more assists than anybody in our squad), then Ricardo Fuller up top. A blend of youth, prime and experience (22, 25, 27, 27 and 33)

It's like a bad soap opera.

What's nest, Joel Ward's cat is stuck up a tree?!

I know this has dragged on but he does need time to think where he wants to go. although as some have said, in the real world if you were offered a job you would have no where near this amount of time to decide.
DanLyles - I also completely agree with that team. Sounds solid but attacking on paper but who knows how it would pan out IF it actually happened. big word is IF tho cus unfortunately it is quite unlikely! COYB

@DanLyles
I like the sound of that! Shame Jewell probably won't do that....

Ok.....so this has gone on a while. But I don't we should blame the player for huge media speculation.

Three factors in why it has gone on longer than other transfers

1) It is an administration sale
2) The season has only just ended, meaning not a rush for the player
3) wanted to see play off final outcome (who wouldn't opt for a premiership side)

Every year its the same. Lots of rumours and speculation but no transfers done before the managers/chairmen return from holidays and the players return to training.

Only a desperate man does a deal at this time, ie the Eaton Spiv sold Bent to Charlton for a cut price deal before 'Arry could bid!

Ward is still being paid, he might as well wait to see if any Prem teams fancy offering a silly deal.

When I first saw us being linked with Ricardo Fuller I wasn't at all keen on the idea. But when you think that he is in and around a midtable Premiership sides first team, has the physical attributes to hold the ball up well, would offer an aerial threat/target (6'3), likes to bring the ball forward and has a goal in him then maybe he would be the perfect foil for Chopra and would bring JET and Martin into play more. I think that stepping down a league he could have an impact akin to that of Jason Roberts at Reading last season.

To be fair he has had plenty of time i cant see him being in the starting eleven anyway so not botherd if he doesnt come here.Danlyes think fuller would be a great signing fuller scotland chops martin jet just behind id be chuffed with that

We always seem to take longer than any other Club to tie up deals so perhaps he will come here after all. I'm still optimistic he will come. Yes to Keogh no St. Ledger (he had his chance) yes to Gallagher - Fuller undecided.

I too am fed up of hearing about Ward.

If Ward signs then great! He's young, and by the sounds of it a very good player! BUT he has taken ages to sign for anyone so it wont be a great loss if he doesn't choose us!

Slowtractor ..wasnt it Leicester that pulled out of the St Ledger deal after he had agreed to join ?
I would like all of DanLyles suggestions also , who's going in goal ?

Marcus added 13:55 - May 21
Can we be linked to Eden Hazard as well? Seems like every other club is.

MichaelRockyLavelle added 14:16 - May 21
I don't want Ward anymore, I'd much rather a player who jumped at the oportunity to join town- not take months and months.

Fuller alongside Chops, Scotland and Wickham on the bench...
Jet and martin just behind/wings.
With Hyam and Drury CDM. 4222 formation?
Then a solid defence- definitely promotion contenders ! IMO
