Town Move for Macclesfield Defender

Town are reported to have had a bid accepted for Macclesfield Town right-back Elliott Hewitt. The 17-year-old Wales U21 international is set to leave Moss Rose in the wake of the League Two side's relegation to the Blue Square Bet Premier.

An undisclosed offer is believed to have been accepted and Town given permission to speak to Hewitt, who is also understood to be interesting a number of other clubs, Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea having been linked earlier in the season.

Having made a single first team start in 2010/11 and becoming the Silkmen's youngest-ever player at 16 years and 342 days, the Bodelwyddan-born defender made 19 starts and five sub appearances this season.

Hewitt, who has won five U21 caps in addition to three at U17 level, missed the end of the season after undergoing hip surgery. He was expected to be fit in time for pre-season training.

Too young. Why are we going after these kind of players? Jewell and Clegg out.

Building for the future is the key. Don't know alot about him - presumably won't be a first choice at right-back, but good cover. Would certainly be a promising signing.

A very exciting link, let's hope this one is true! He ticks all the right boxes of the sort of player we should be bidding for as we build for the future.

An actual RB... that's exciting (perhaps we should raid Sheff Utd, as they were solid in defence today)

Phil, you had me until " He is understood to be interesting a number of clubs ", The club must move quick and get him in before others step up their interest otherwise we will lose out again

Come on, let's get real. This lad is 17 years old, having played half a season for a club relegated from League 2. He may well be worth signing but I for one know absolutely nothing about him. If we do actually manage to sign him, he will, in the short term, in all likelihood only be playing in the academy squad. Some people on here are so desperate for a new signing that any link sends them into lemming mode shrieking 'sign him up'. We can't sign everyone. Whether or not he signs for us there must be more pressing priorities in mind. History might ultimately suggest that this was a key long term signing; I can only see this as 'long term' and nothing to get too excited about in assembling a Squad for next season.

I would tend to agree that this lad could turn out to be a really good signing for the future. I have no problem with the club going for this type of player.

Just two points to make that really bother me:

1. If he is attracting attention from a host of other clubs, are our incompetent management team able to close this deal; and,

2. If we are so interested in signing 17 year olds from other clubs, what the hell had gone so wrong with our academy and why isn't the investment being made in it for long-term success?

The big spending has started, mass investment from Evans and maybe a good prospect (considering he was playing for a relegated side), hope no one above league two moves for him or we might miss out.

...... the kind of youngster we once produced ourselves in abundance - and actually PLAYED them in our team. Somewhat ironic that we now talk of 'buying them' in - should be telling the reasonably educated something. Especially after seeing so many youngsters leave the Club recently after being offered paltry contracts !!! - strange times indeed.

I think this just shows how desperate we've become, a lot of us on here getting excited about signing a 17 who nobody knows anything about.
Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the idea of picking up youngsters from lower leagues, in fact I'm all for it and as we found out last year there are some real gems out there in the likes of Cresswell.
It's a sad state of affairs though when we seem to have no confidence in our clubs ability to make a signing, hence this guy becomes big news. A few years back this wouldn't be such a revelation, he would have come in and more than likely settled into our youth/reserves before being introduced to the first team. Now it almost feels like some are treating this kid as the messiah and the answer to all our problems.

Having a bids accepted from a club is very different to having a plyer sign for us.
I won't hold my breath waiting on this one to mature.
Anyway, didn't think Jewel liked playing promising youngsters, unless it's for 10 minutes in the last game of the season.

If we get him that either means we've got in quick before others or that he's had other clubs to consider and he's chosen us. Either way good start to transfer summer.
PS If Rhodes goes, as rumoured, are we due a pay off, does anyone know?

well guys plain to see at last we may be looking towards the future but looking at 17 year olds that probabilly will only sit on the bench in league games if at all, will only get picked for our 1st round league cup defeat no good for today but maybe in a three or four year plan but well only sign him for three years, then hell go on a free . coyb

Amazing. Any RB we sign won't be a starter but will be great to have potential like this as back up. A couple of CC games/Edwards injury/suspensions, he will be ready.... We do not need or want players like Joel Ward here. I would much rather this young lad.
