Forest Could Move for Delaney
Forest Could Move for Delaney
Wednesday, 25th Jul 2012 09:29

Town’s Irish centre-half Damien Delaney has emerged as a target of Nottingham Forest. The 31-year-old has a year remaining on his Blues deal.

One of this morning’s national newspapers reported that Delaney was due to join Forest having been released by Town this summer and while the Irishman is still in contract with the Blues, there is believed to be interest from the recently taken-over club, although we understand Town are yet to receive an approach.

Forest are short on centre-halves with amongst others Luke Chambers moving on to Town this summer.

New manager Sean O'Driscoll said: "We need to supplement the squad with some defenders because, in this division that is the most important area.

"We have to bring in players with good character, who can develop and use their experience to help the squad."

The Midlanders are also targeting former Blues loanee Danny Collins, who is reportedly on the verge of a £400,000 switch from Stoke.

Delaney is also believed to be interesting Crystal Palace, who previously targeted him in January 2011 when they also made an approach for ex-skipper David Norris.

Totally agree with itfc1981 and robbo123 I'll chip in for petrol money.

Always thought Delaney was a big f u from Magilon when he went to qpr and sold us Delaney. Had a good partnership with Macauley but that's only because Macauley made him look good.

Please don't sell cresswell.

I am sure this must be paper talk as there was no news of Delaney being released and I cant see town releasing a centre back when we only had Smith and lately Chambers.
Delaney could do a good job for us as cover.

Delaney decent second CB, but cannot lead the defence. Needs a good CB alongside.

Delaney is fine as our 4th choice centre back playing 10 games a season. But we desperately need another central defender. Somebody like Danny Collins, or Danny Gabbidon, or anybody Welsh named Danny!!!

If Chambers got injured we would be left with Smith and Delaney again. Those two are fine as cover but I think Chambers with another signing would be preferable. Another right sided central defender who could partner Chambers or Smith.

We desperately need him as cover. However I can see us selling him and, dare I say it, get O'Dea back on a free as I doubt we will spend any cash on our backup CB's...

Lord Mac spot on, yes we can afford to move him on as he's only got a year left but only if we replace him.

Prefer him to stay but would accept him leaving. Could we get in on the Collins deal? 400k

Delaney to go and Danny Collins to come in. Now that would not be a bad scenario.

Has done 'okay' but no more. If he goes, will need to sign another permanent CB and quickly. We would only have Chambers and Smith left (and Smith is away)!

Delaney is a good professional who gives his all for the cause, and he's a dependable player - with a reliable centre back beside him. I don't think he deserves any slagging off! He was certainly one of the more solid performers in Holland.

Anyone know how his donkey is getting there?

Delaney has the heart of a lion, he'll stick his head and feet anywhere to clear the ball - surely that's the first attribute you want for a defender? Disappointed to see so much negativity directed towards him to be honest.

Yes, he can be clumsy but as we've seen when paired with a reliable centre half, he was an absolute rock and I believe came close to POTY 2009/10. Chambers could be that reliable partner in the same way McAuley was.

I wouldn't sell, unless there was a particularly good fee involved, which there won't be, let's face it.

Apart from anything, sell Delaney and we have one centre half at the club! Smith gets back from the Olympic mid August doesn't he?

Reckon Damien is better than some give him credit for. He always gives his all eventhough sometimes its not good enough. Wouldnt leave him go unless we bring someone in straight away. Danny Collins???

Cant believe this, he is dependable cover if we assume Chambers/Smith to be the number one pairing. We had the worst defensive record across the four leagues last season and yet we are letting defenders go without replacing them.
Posts on here saying get rid and replace yet we have struggled to recruit defenders recently so how are we suddenly going to get them in.
I fear for this season.

He has always seemed ok alongside a better than he is centre half, maybe doesn't have the confidence to lead. I can only assume we've replacements lined up, in reality we needed another CB anyway so we'll need 2 if he goes.
Not to mention the possibilty of a new LB.

@ Garv. Have to agree with you mate. He gets alot of unfair stick imo.

Delaney is a strong centre back who is fairly good in the air, but he can make mistakes like most and his forward-passing is terrible. Damien managed to forge good partnerships with McAuley and Smith however, so I think he is a decent enough player to compete with Smith for the left-sided centre back spot or at least provide backup.

We need to look to sign another centre back, not sell one. At the moment we only have three, so if one gets injured or suspended then we don't have a central defender for the bench (unless you could Ainsley, which I don't really).

imo, we would be silly to sell delaney. he is very decent backup at this level. selling him would mean having to bring another cb in which, in this market could be quite expensive.

if we were to find someone to replace him on lower wages then this would make sense but the talked about players at the moment e.g. gabbidon, collins would be probably on almost double delaneys wages if we were to bring them here.

Collins and Chambers would be a solid CB pairing, let's hope we can hijack some deals for once! Collins and Friend in, Delaney could be spared then.

High earner so I am sure Town will listen to offers. He has not had a good time at Ipswich- injuries, form, Keane etc so would not be surprised to see him want to go and secure his future.
Could be problems developing at the back- all we need is Smith to get injured in the next 2 weeks and we might be sounding out Mark Fish for a comeback

Dont sell Dellerz! Who else is a DECENT centre half that will be happy to be cover!? He will be on the bench at forest or here, seems silly to uproot his family and sever ties with friends just to sit on the bench at forest.
