Jewell Delighted With Win at Colchester
Jewell Delighted With Win at Colchester
Wednesday, 8th Aug 2012 22:14

Blues boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side’s display as they beat Colchester United 2-1 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Jewell said: “Certainly in the first half we were excellent, weren’t we? We should have been out of sight in the first half. They had a good chance but I think we’ve had about four gilt-edged opportunities.

“We played some really good football in the first half. We made a few changes in the second half and then it’s always a little disjointed.

“We came through a couple of injuries, Scott Loach had a tight groin and Luke Chambers had a tight adductor, and we didn’t want to take any chances.

“We took them off because it’s pre-season and although it’s important, it’s not as important as a week on Saturday. That’s what we’re aiming for.”

The Town manager was pleased to see Michael Chopra net twice more: “There’s nothing like your goalscorer scoring goals, but it’s not just that, his general play has been sharper this pre-season than it was last season. He’s fitter and he’s got six goals in pre-season, which is a good return.”

Overall, he says he’s been much happier with the last two performances: “We did create a lot of opportunities, we had a lot of good movement in the team, we passed the ball exceptionally well and we were a danger every time we’ve got forward. But we’ve got to make sure when we get those gilt-edged situations, we kill teams off.”

Don't write off Tuesday please, as we don't want to be dumped out of the cup by a League Two side to start our competitive season!

Well done to the lads tonight. I think the squad is in pretty good shape considering the finances have been as tight as they have since the Joe Royle days, so hopefully it'll be a good season ahead.

No point spending my money next Tuesday then if he has no intention of trying to win a cup game.

Agree with Mark, when i was reading that part of the story. We need to win Tuesday to get in the winning mood. Last season we beat Birstol City 3-0 then lost in the carling cup and went on a very bad run. However the team is looking very good indeed and in good shape.

COYB!

I also actually thought about that Mark. Hope he plays some youngsters but make sure we proceed

The Cup match is the first of four games in 11 days, three of them tough League fixtures. Don't be surprised if we don't put out the first team against Bristol Rovers with that kind of schedule coming up.

Just a bit of a worry that same as last season we only seem to play well for one half! Yes i know "it's only pre season" but it's a worry.

OK I admit it - I only get to see Town once per year, so if you want to stop reading now please feel free! I live in Poole on the south coast and now Portsmouth have gone down and Southampton up my nearest away game is Bristol and neither Saturdays nor midweeks fit with work and family.

ENOUGH of my woes. What is the point ... well, the ONE game this year that I look like being at is ... yep, Bristol Rovers home in the little cup on Tuesday!!!

Tickets bought and transport sorted and I am really looking forward to it.

I watched the win in that cup against Northampton (thankfully wasn't there for the next time) and actually thought it was a great game. Great "pre-season" opportunity to get the "best 11" out there to see how they do against a team who might be lower, but will surely be hungry for that upset.

I KNOW we have a tough league campaign coming up with a tough start - but the way our pre-season has gone (up down and up again) we really do need to treat Tuesday seriously if we are to have any confidence going into that league campaign. Even if we wont play our best 11 in future rounds, the timing of this one means it should be treated as the last preparation match for the best 11 even if we have legs on the bench to allow the cotton wool to come out for some.

And if not for the good of the season - please remember it is the only game I'll get to see and be kind to me Paul !!!
