Blues and Owls Linked With Doncaster Midfielder
Tuesday, 4th Sep 2012 00:09

Town and Sheffield Wednesday are reported to be interested in Doncaster Rovers left midfielder Martin Woods. The 26-year-old Scot, who has a year remaining on his contract, is believed to be available for loan.

Airdrie-born Woods started his career with then-Premier League Leeds, spending a month on loan with Hartlepool in 2004/05.

After the Whites, for whom he had made only one senior sub appearance, dropped out of the top flight he moved on to Sunderland, making a handful of appearances before joining Rotherham on a free in the summer of 2007.

A year later Woods, who has been capped by Scotland at U17, U19 and U21 levels, moved on to Doncaster and, aside from a month on loan at Yeovil in 2008, he has been there ever since.

While Blues manager Paul Jewell has said he is looking to strengthen in other areas as well as centre-half, a left midfielder doesn’t look to be a priority now that Daryl Murphy has returned on loan from Celtic for a third spell at Portman Road.

Football League clubs are able to take players on 93-day loans from the weekend.

I'm waiting for the usual barrage of "can he play at CB?" 8-)

His history doesn't really seem that of a player who would aid a Championship side with a promotion push sadly, i may be wrong but you never know i guess

If we're going to loan someone, please let it be a centre back.

With the strong possibility of Boyd also joining I can't see this happening and don't really want it to. Strange one.

What right do we have to make a promotion push?

Wake up.

As big a right as any other team in the Championship.

Garv, maybe the question is, What chance do we have? In which I reply, without some defensive strengthening and organization, not much- and then the point is- would this fella strengthen any part of out team? To which I concluded, I find it highly doubtful. Many of us fans are wanting ITFC to build up to at least a playoff contending team thee last time I checked...

Every year is a promotion push until mathematically impossible.

Never stop believing. Even when 6 down I think of the possibility of winning 7-6.

This season I would be very satisfied if we finished in the top 10 with a young team/squad including the likes of Hyam, Carson, Loach, Martin, Cresswell, JET, Smith, Taylor, Murray, Ainsley and Hewitt.

In my opinion we have no right to even consider ourselves to be anything close to promotion contenders, because we haven't been for about seven years now and have been mid-table for three or four consecutive seasons. Gradual improvement with a talented young squad should be the aim.

Now, that's not negative, its positively realistic.

With Paul Jewell publicly saying he wants to bring players in on loan we will be linked with everyone and the teaboy. Jewell knows we need defenders and he is not that inept to say so then go against his own statements. So we will get defenders, My money is on St Leger and one other and we will be linked to all and sundry wich at least keeps Phil busy. COYB.

I think he would add something, though it was a while back he was quite a big part of Sean O'driscol's success at Doncaster when they played some really good football and he's a natural footballer. Woods would give us a nice balance in their, a bit of maturity amongst Drury, the graft of N'daw and youthfulness of Luongo and Hyam. On the other side we have decent central midfield cover and I'm aware the centre back position is the number one priority.

I know very well this is only a link, like in so many other cases. Snd I hope it remains that. If were to bring in boyd i dont see why we need him unless martin is on his way out...

He doesn't sound particularily awe inspiring.

Now let's think. 25 miles from Donny to Sheffield, or an eternity to the back of beyond. I know where I'd go.

Gotta go with Garv on this, top 10, then push for promotion next season

Agree Garv, this would be realistic progress.

a promotion push is unlikely but we should be at least trying. I think everyone is on the same page there. If you look at other clubs in the division with more financial clout and better squads on paper it's going to be a hard task and we certainly shouldn't have the expectation of being up there to the point that just missing the playoff's is "disgraceful"

Problem with pushing for next season, not this one is that next season never comes. Also easier to become complacent. I say we shove a sock in that "fat ladys" mouth to stop her singing and push for promo this season. Only singing I want is from all 4 stands at PR (excluding away fans ofcourse).

I agree that a promotion push looks somewhat unrealistic at the moment even with just forty two games to go but we have to keep dreaming. We could get into a confident winning streak and perspectives would undoubtedly change along with the short term aspirations. Similarly we could take one point from the next four games and find ourselves cast adrift at the foot of the table when all the aspirations will be to escape relegation. The truly sad thing is that no-one can confidently predict which way this particular cookie will crumble. Generally the minimum target must be to progress and a top half finish would probably seen as progress and certainly what many fans would settle for today. At some point though we will need to break out of this mediocrity in order to ensure that continuity of support is preserved through the generations. We can't attract or keep the younger fan base with what is being served up presently.

whats the point in getting st ledger, he is 5ft 10. that is no good for a c/b. needs to be someone who is physically strong and around 6ft 2, 6ft 3.

dont see this deal happening but we are starting to see a more positive shift in looking at lower league talent which should be applauded all the best town sideswere built this way and i feel that is where our best chances of mounting a playoff challenge lie an experienced cb and a league 2 youngsterwould tide us over and lay foundations for future lokking forward to seeing hewitt and dont think we should sign boyd he is apparently prone to laziness. team is coming together now loach looks a v good keeper things are looking up

I'm assuming there's nothing in this link and that it's just papertalk. Two centre backs please and nothing else thank you PJ!

With a promotion push unlikely, save our cash for when the new manger comes in and next season.
