Town Confirm Jewell's Exit
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 13:00

Town have confirmed that manager Paul Jewell has left the club "by mutual consent".

A statement from the Blues reads: "Ipswich Town Football Club have today parted company with Paul Jewell by mutual consent.

"Jewell, who has been in charge at Portman Road since January 2011, finalised matters with club owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg this morning and all parties agreed that he should leave his post as manager."

Owner Marcus Evans added: “Since he first walked through the door here, no one has worked harder to bring success to this football club than Paul Jewell.

“Unfortunately his outstanding commitment has not been rewarded by results on the pitch and having spoken with Paul at length, we feel it’s best for him and the club if we go our separate ways.

“I’m bitterly disappointed — as is Paul — that it has not worked out as we had hoped when he became our manager 21 months ago and I would like to put on record my thanks for his services to the club and wish him every success in the future.”

Jewell himself said: “I could not have had any more support than I have done from Marcus Evans and Simon Clegg. I have enjoyed working with both of them in my time as Ipswich Town manager.

“We all know that football is a results business though and I’ve never hidden from the fact that our results have not been good enough.

“It’s been a privilege to be manager of such a fantastic football club and I want to thank the staff and the supporters for the backing they have given me in my time at the club and wish Ipswich Town the best of fortunes ahead.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg said: “I am bitterly disappointed that we have parted company with Paul, but we accept that this is in our respective best interests.

“Paul has worked tirelessly to try and deliver the levels of success on the pitch which we all aspire to but the recent results and our position in the table required us to make a change.

“The search for a new manager of this football club is well under way and I am confident that we will find the right man to get the best out of the players, both individually and collectively, and lead the team to future success.

“The immediate focus is to ensure we secure three points on Saturday and in this regards I have asked Chris Hutchings to take over as caretaker manager.”

Town have called a press conference with chief executive Simon Clegg for 3pm.

Unsurprising but still NOT good news - PJ is a scapegoat for Evans/Clegg both of whom should leave if either has a conscience - which I very much doubt. What happens now? Redknapp too old, Curbishley out of touch - might struggle to appoint someone decent given league position although I'll be submitting my CV - again! COYB.

I would have loved it if Jewell had succeeded, but unfortunately it wasn't to be.

Agree with Portman Terrorist. This next appointment is possibly the most critical in the club's history. I actually don't want too much money thrown at this. I want someone who can work with and inspire what we have. Get Higginbottom in, Wellens, Henderson, Diaw, Mohsni out (the latter is good but we need togetherness in teh dressing room). We really need the true blue youngsters such as Hyam and Carson and Loach inspired, with others who rfeally want to play for the club like Drury, Higgy, Murphy, Scotland, Edwards. Not sure we should worry too much about keeping Martin or Chopra, who's attitudes are questionable.

All the best for the furture Paul - shame it didn't work out - Sorry for those of us fans who have got personal in the last few weeks you never deserved that as the effort you were putting into the job could not be questioned.

Of course this is great news wahhooooo!

but can anyone say they trust that useless w*nker clegg to get someone decent in and then help attract some decent players!!!
Clegg is as much to blame, i f*ckin hate this arrogrant pr*ck, we need to get him out and we need to be taken over by someone who loves the club and doesnt sit in barbados sunning his balls while are club is in turmoil

I know i was going ape sh*t last night but i want to thank Paul at least for his effort, my frustration was mostly aimed at the situation of the club and not completely at Paul.

fair travels wherever you may go.

This is not going to change anything. We still have a CEO who doesn't know the first thing about running a football club and dealing with players. The new manager will continue to have the same problems. We'll offer good money for players, just to have the deals break down over personal terms because we're offering the players half of what other clubs are paying.

Clegg out!

Please , please , somebody get the message to the top of the tree , ' Please take your time in your decision making ,' and whoever you asked last time for their opinion , and the time before that , don't bother revisiting them again , go elsewhere .

a very sad day all round.
Inevitable, as it turned out.
I'm sure he tried his best, but sadly it just wasn't enough.

Very sad it's come to this, but his position was totally untenable. Onwards and upwards! Will be interesting to see the reaction from the players on Saturday

A third bad appointment would be catastrophic. Please not Mick McCarthy or Gary Megson

IT MIGHT BE GOOD NEWS, BUT DONT FORGET WE ARE STILL VERY DEEP IN THE MIRE, AND WHO EVER TAKES OVER IS GOT ONE HELL OF JOB ON HIS HANDS. LETS MAKE SURE WE GET BEHIND THE NEW MANAGER WHO EVER HE IS.

I take no pleasure in seeing anyone lose their job, but football is a results business and the results just weren't good enough.
Whoever the next manager is, the priority must be to sort out the defence as without that we are doomed. My choice of a (short term) fix would be to appoint George Graham. I know it wouldn't be pretty, but needs must where the Devil drives.

Thanks for nothing Paul..absolutely stunning how you've managed to make a club like ours so,so poor.

I can only hope and pray that Evans asks someone who knows something about football/our club before appointing another numpty.

Billy Davies for me.

Shame it did'nt work out but the right decision without doubt.

Big decision coming up for Evans because we cannot afford another mistake. The next appointment could make or break our club for years to come in my opinion.

Could he also get rid of Clegg at the same time because I really do think there is a big problem there as well!
