Town Confirm Jewell's Exit
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 13:00

Town have confirmed that manager Paul Jewell has left the club "by mutual consent".

A statement from the Blues reads: "Ipswich Town Football Club have today parted company with Paul Jewell by mutual consent.

"Jewell, who has been in charge at Portman Road since January 2011, finalised matters with club owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg this morning and all parties agreed that he should leave his post as manager."

Owner Marcus Evans added: “Since he first walked through the door here, no one has worked harder to bring success to this football club than Paul Jewell.

“Unfortunately his outstanding commitment has not been rewarded by results on the pitch and having spoken with Paul at length, we feel it’s best for him and the club if we go our separate ways.

“I’m bitterly disappointed — as is Paul — that it has not worked out as we had hoped when he became our manager 21 months ago and I would like to put on record my thanks for his services to the club and wish him every success in the future.”

Jewell himself said: “I could not have had any more support than I have done from Marcus Evans and Simon Clegg. I have enjoyed working with both of them in my time as Ipswich Town manager.

“We all know that football is a results business though and I’ve never hidden from the fact that our results have not been good enough.

“It’s been a privilege to be manager of such a fantastic football club and I want to thank the staff and the supporters for the backing they have given me in my time at the club and wish Ipswich Town the best of fortunes ahead.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg said: “I am bitterly disappointed that we have parted company with Paul, but we accept that this is in our respective best interests.

“Paul has worked tirelessly to try and deliver the levels of success on the pitch which we all aspire to but the recent results and our position in the table required us to make a change.

“The search for a new manager of this football club is well under way and I am confident that we will find the right man to get the best out of the players, both individually and collectively, and lead the team to future success.

“The immediate focus is to ensure we secure three points on Saturday and in this regards I have asked Chris Hutchings to take over as caretaker manager.”

Town have called a press conference with chief executive Simon Clegg for 3pm.

a young manager is the way forward, karl robinson would be a great choice and cant think of any other stand out names apart from the usual suspects, curbs, mccarthy, megson, davies, please none of these. the whole club need a clean out top to bottom and the new man will need alot of time to repair the mess that keane and jewell have left because the use of the loan window has turned into a joke

About time, its been inevitable for some time now.

Time Evans and Clegg pulled their finger out and put the football club first. Get in someone who is passionate enough about town to get us out of trouble... Premier league 2013/14!!! :D

This is only a small change in the big scheme that is the mess of this club.
As many have said, I don't know what Simon Clegg does, so why is he here?
The players are as much to blame as PJ. All good players on their day but not performing now, it's a shame some of them can't be sacked.
ME came nearly 5 years ago now and I honestly don't think we would have been in much of a different position otherwise (probably better as we would have entered admin, cleared the rubbish and be on the rise)
Very important decision for next manager, young hungry and wants to play football guy for me

Karl Robinson is sticking out for me as a good appointment!
Redknapp also a favourite of mine, always admired him! not sure if he's the right option is this current situation however.
Also, no one has mentioned Sean Dyche, I think he's a good manager

My vote is for Boris johnson as manager, bring the fun back to Portman Road, and he will know more about football than Paul Jewell!!

Wait for Brendon Rodgers to get the sack after 'Pool lose to Everton at the weekend. (Joke)

Curbs is the out and out favourite at this early stage. 2/1 with Harry at 10/1.

Burley is at 20/1 with Billy Davies 18/1

Gareth Southgate is 25/1 along with Terry Butcher, Alex McCleish and (aaarrrggghhhh) Nigel Worthington.

Gordon Strachan has made a move up the odds table. Now equal with many others at 33/1.

All this excitement, all this speculation! I hope I'm not disappointed when the decision is announced.

I'm sorry, but I don't want managers past their sell by date, failures at other clubs or out of touch with modern football. That rules out Megson, McCarthy, Davies, Curbishley, Coyle, Ferguson and the like. I want an up and coming manager, I would like Keith Hill of Barnsley. Otherwise, Robinson of MK Dons or Matt Holland. I'm unconvinced by Paul Tisdale

I agree it's a decision that had to be made but I do feel sorry for Jewell. There's something wrong at the very core of the club which goes deeper than whoever is manager. Those coming on here suggesting Jewell knew nothing about football are idiots. He's a football man through and through and I thought that was just the kind of manager we needed when he was appointed. I don't doubt he's made mistakes but there's more to it then that.

Who's next? Hard to get away from the feeling that with Curbishley you're getting a carbon copy of Jewell - success at 'family' club, experience of getting teams promoted and keeping them in the top division, been out of the game for a while'.

A fresh, bright talent is very appealing but if there is something wrong at the heart of the club then it might take a strong, experienced character to sort it out.

Paolo Di Canio would be fun.

I feel Hutchings will be jst another PJ in disguse, same tactics, it has to be undersood that any descions made in the dugout would have been made by those two together!and we all know how that worked out!
Give Mick Mills the caretakers job for while at least he loves this club

Christmas has come early. I'm considering doing the naked conga round the office in celebration. Seriously, it was time. It's been time for a few weeks.

Harry, no
Steve Kean, hell no
Mick McCarthy is Jewell 2
Curbs/Holland?
Big Fat Joe?

Ipswich till I die. A momentous day for the Club.
COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

At last some action but 6 weeks and about 10 points too late.

We find ourself in a very bad position but, but , but, but.......we should not rush into an appointment. Both Keane and PJ had come into the Town job after a break away from the game - this may be coincidental but both really struggled - I fear much the same if we go for Curbishley although I really like his style.

We need to re-adopt our footballing philosphy that we had - a passing team, a team able and willing to use youth, a team that had a great scouting tradition (very good in Scotland & Holland), a club that connects with the fans, a plan that is transparent. Get all of that right and we won't mind paying top dollar at match day!

Place Klugg in charge for Saturday as Hutchings was as big a part of the problem as PJ.

ME - to really get change you 1. Need to take a more prominent and transparent role in the club or 2. Get a CE that understands and knows the game.

I would love to see Harry Rednapp in the CE role and with a young manager brought in. Also bring back the likes of Fabian, Matty, De Vos etc into the coaching roles - all have Ipswich blood and will kick start the upward curve.

If ME reverts to type the slide will continue, probably after a short upturn.

ME time to man up, be seen and lead from the front.

i wish PJ well but whatever manger comes in next will find it hard when most of the players who comes down to discuss terms cannot agree with Clegg and Evans. plus with are gates at a all time low just means nothing for transfers..

anyone who thinks that Mick Mills (don't think has ever managed a team) or a young unproven manager is the right way to go are deluded......we need stability and someone with managerial experience. I highly doubt Owen Coyle or Billy davies would be interested as well....people need to start thinking about realistic targets, off the top of my head not sure exactly who that is......we love Curbs, but don;t like the fact he has not been in the league in some time
