Town Confirm Jewell's Exit
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 13:00

Town have confirmed that manager Paul Jewell has left the club "by mutual consent".

A statement from the Blues reads: "Ipswich Town Football Club have today parted company with Paul Jewell by mutual consent.

"Jewell, who has been in charge at Portman Road since January 2011, finalised matters with club owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg this morning and all parties agreed that he should leave his post as manager."

Owner Marcus Evans added: “Since he first walked through the door here, no one has worked harder to bring success to this football club than Paul Jewell.

“Unfortunately his outstanding commitment has not been rewarded by results on the pitch and having spoken with Paul at length, we feel it’s best for him and the club if we go our separate ways.

“I’m bitterly disappointed — as is Paul — that it has not worked out as we had hoped when he became our manager 21 months ago and I would like to put on record my thanks for his services to the club and wish him every success in the future.”

Jewell himself said: “I could not have had any more support than I have done from Marcus Evans and Simon Clegg. I have enjoyed working with both of them in my time as Ipswich Town manager.

“We all know that football is a results business though and I’ve never hidden from the fact that our results have not been good enough.

“It’s been a privilege to be manager of such a fantastic football club and I want to thank the staff and the supporters for the backing they have given me in my time at the club and wish Ipswich Town the best of fortunes ahead.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg said: “I am bitterly disappointed that we have parted company with Paul, but we accept that this is in our respective best interests.

“Paul has worked tirelessly to try and deliver the levels of success on the pitch which we all aspire to but the recent results and our position in the table required us to make a change.

“The search for a new manager of this football club is well under way and I am confident that we will find the right man to get the best out of the players, both individually and collectively, and lead the team to future success.

“The immediate focus is to ensure we secure three points on Saturday and in this regards I have asked Chris Hutchings to take over as caretaker manager.”

Town have called a press conference with chief executive Simon Clegg for 3pm.

Ah come on people, we've over looked the obvious, Canada's finest, Frankie Yallop.

In all seriousness, I would not like any of merry go round brigade, its got to be a Burley/Holland partnership.

No one likes to see someone lose their job but as Jewell states it is a results business and at any other club he would have probably been relieved of his duties earlier. The stats don't lie and he now has the unenviable record of being one of the worst managers in ITFC history. As a result i'm pleased the decision has been made.
My only concern is that Clegg is still here and i'm not convinced he is the man to take this club forward.
We're now in a difficult situation where we need an experienced manager to get us out of trouble quickly but at the same time the club IMO could do with a young upcoming manager who can bring fresh idea's and young players through.
Positive decision from the club but difficult times ahead.
I really hope it is 3rd time lucky for the ME/SC managerial appointment.
Mick Mills was excellent in his analysis of the club last night but i would not have him as our manager. If we are to look at town legends surely Mogga must be worth a look if we could get him?
My vote would go to Karl Robinson although i would love to see Ian Holloway approached.
Just as long as its not Chris Hutchings,Megson or Steve Kean!!
COYB and 3 points on Saturday.

He should never have been appointed in the first place.

Most people were of the opinion that he had been out of the game way too long.

My fear is that whoever 'advised' ME and Clegg the last time will be called upon again.
No Curbs, Big Mick, Megson (God forbid) or Mills.

We need a young hungry manager who see the Ipswich job as a big step up not an old hasbeen looking for a retirement fund.

Fascinating to see who comes in.Obviously this means that our goalkeepers will stop dropping the ball now,the left side of midfield and defence might stop a cross coming in and our strikers may actually find the net from 3 yards instead of putting it over. All im saying is...it wasnt just the fault of 1 man. All the best to PJ,for whatever reason he wasnt up to it,mixed feelings.

He was never good enough and told one lie after anouther,Town have never been in such a state on and off the pitch and its all down to the bluffer Jewell nd his lack of ability to manage

Guess this now means the loyal supporters numbers will now be swollen by the fair weather, glory hunting 'fans' for the next month or so!? That is until they find something else to moan about before throwing up the same old arguments of being 'true fans for years and years...'

It had to be, and fair play to the man for taking the decision now. But just be careful who you wish for to replace him. I'm not elated; I'm worried what we might get instead. Too many false dawns. Anyway, I'm still planning on coming over for the Wednesday game, so hope the new regime is in place by then. Thanks, Paul, for doing your best. Sorry it didn't work out. No hard feelings from me.

Statement by Mr Clegg: "I am confident that we will find the right man to get the best out of the players, both individually and collectively, and lead the team to future success." I'm sorry, but I'm not at all confident about that. I hope to be proved wrong.

Sad to see it hasn't worked for a proud and honest man. Thanks for the effort PJ and all the best for the future.
Next manager - I'd like to see Glen Hoddle in charge - great coach and great tactician. Time to forgive his misguide comments of a few years ago.

Paul Mariner & Matt Holland, both Ipswich through and through and the formula may well work. Give them a chance.

Def the right decision, we need a new manager, giving us new direction, however, I truly believe Jewell has given his all for ITFC, & although its not worked out, I do wish him well for the future.

Inevitable Paul I'm afraid. It just didn't work out for you. Good luck in the future. Hope someone will be in place for Birmingham, first opportunity to go to a game so hoping someone is in place by then. Would be happy with McCarthy, Davies or Curbishley. Up the Town.

I think carl Robinson would be good but I think mk dons have a fantastic owner in winks man when ever I have seen him he has come across as a very good bloke that love his club and football and all the appointments he has made for them have been good ones so ME give him a call and see wot he says because he won't want carl leaving when u ring him up to poach him and listening to Suffolk last night I think Mick mills talks alot of sense and would be someone good to get his input I liked PJ though but he really didn't get the respect from the players and as for Carlos he is no skipper and I told him that last night the only two players u heard last night were Danny and Nigel first time I have heard any shouting on the pitch the last 2 seasons and any decent team have the same team out every week win or lose that's the key

As harsh as it sounds its good news because we can finally move forward albeit with an intelligent appointment. Like many people have said I have always had time for paul as a man but he's made countless mistakes and results simply haven't been good enough, I wish him the best and I dont agree that this would be his last job, a League 1 or 2 club may come available and I dont mean that as tongue and cheek.

Who would I like to see, a young and up and coming manager, possible Karl Robinson, Carl Fletcher has done a decent job at Plymouth in tough circumstances. Solskjaer and Holloway possibly but may be difficult to persuade. Even Uwe Rosler as an outsider. But it is for much debate.

Can see us going for an out of work manager because of the financial point of view. Short term we need results, long term we need to develop youth and have some sort of plan.

No supporter wants to see town in their current plight and we could have well done without this after the RK debacle but I think Paul Jewell had integrity and he deserves respect whether he was great or whether he was clueless. He always conducted himself correctly and now he's out of a job and he would never made the money during his career that RK would have done, and one would think his prospects in professional football are fairly scant, so lets have fewer "Yah Boo" style comments please. If anyone is to blame it is those who appointed him.

How refreshing to witness the general decency re-emerging from Town fans on this thread - PJ a decent man, but this was the right decision by both parties and sadly inevitable end to one man's tenure.

Not sure people should be jumping for joy just yet, as the people ahead of the manager at our club are yet to demonstrate an ability to make the right decision and more important would be a strategy that puts hunger over experience both on and off the pitch.

Less than 16,000 there last night at the most expensive ground in the Championship and the problems of our club are unlikely to be resolved by changing the person who never puts on a pair of boots or signs the cheques.
