Town Confirm Jewell's Exit
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 13:00

Town have confirmed that manager Paul Jewell has left the club "by mutual consent".

A statement from the Blues reads: "Ipswich Town Football Club have today parted company with Paul Jewell by mutual consent.

"Jewell, who has been in charge at Portman Road since January 2011, finalised matters with club owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg this morning and all parties agreed that he should leave his post as manager."

Owner Marcus Evans added: “Since he first walked through the door here, no one has worked harder to bring success to this football club than Paul Jewell.

“Unfortunately his outstanding commitment has not been rewarded by results on the pitch and having spoken with Paul at length, we feel it’s best for him and the club if we go our separate ways.

“I’m bitterly disappointed — as is Paul — that it has not worked out as we had hoped when he became our manager 21 months ago and I would like to put on record my thanks for his services to the club and wish him every success in the future.”

Jewell himself said: “I could not have had any more support than I have done from Marcus Evans and Simon Clegg. I have enjoyed working with both of them in my time as Ipswich Town manager.

“We all know that football is a results business though and I’ve never hidden from the fact that our results have not been good enough.

“It’s been a privilege to be manager of such a fantastic football club and I want to thank the staff and the supporters for the backing they have given me in my time at the club and wish Ipswich Town the best of fortunes ahead.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg said: “I am bitterly disappointed that we have parted company with Paul, but we accept that this is in our respective best interests.

“Paul has worked tirelessly to try and deliver the levels of success on the pitch which we all aspire to but the recent results and our position in the table required us to make a change.

“The search for a new manager of this football club is well under way and I am confident that we will find the right man to get the best out of the players, both individually and collectively, and lead the team to future success.

“The immediate focus is to ensure we secure three points on Saturday and in this regards I have asked Chris Hutchings to take over as caretaker manager.”

Town have called a press conference with chief executive Simon Clegg for 3pm.

He had to go I shed no tears, but I fear who is the next Manager simply because Mr Evans has got it wrong big time with the last two.

Players were texting each other last night saying he had gone so no surprise and thank heavens get Clegg out and get someone in who actually knows about football and we may have a fighting chance. How about Bryan Klug in the interim though

Goodbye Mr Jewel
You promised you would love us,
But you knew too much.
Goodbye Mr Jewel
You had all the answers,
But no human touch.
If life is subtraction,
Your number is up.
Your love is a fraction.
It's not adding up!!

shefkikuqi. what a daft thing to say. wed have been better off if evans not come in? yer, great, wed have gone into admin for a 2nd time, at best been docked 10 points, ended up relegated, or at worst going into liquidation. for those already slating clegg about the next appointment, please remember its evans who appoints the managers, just as its evans who decides how much we pay players to sign for us. clegg is just the frontman for evans. would like karl robinson, but while im not sure about curbs, because of the time he out of the game, it could just be that he & this club could be a good fit for each other. for those suggesting under him wed be playing hoof ball, thats rubbish , charlton played good football under curbs. but lets wait & see, & whoever the next man is lets get behind him everyone. hes gonna need time to sort things out.

Hutchings in charge, 3 pts to the Owls then...
Lets hope we take time and make the right appointment. Just wish Klug had been given the reigns as the old regime still rule, albeit without the figure head.

Mick Mills has been a manager ... an unsuccessful one. Whoever comes in must understand the serious budget constraints (and therefore I believe the succession of loanees rather than full time players) and be able to work with the youth. This surely has to be the way to build for the future and get back to admirable youth system of the past. It seems that of the players PJ brought in, the more recent younger ones were better. We need a Bobby Robson reincarnate !

All the best PJ - nice fella, but the rot had set in after Keane p#*ssed everyone off and turned the football world into Ipswich-haters. We were always well thought of in the game until Keane, then mediocrity set in and now no decent prospect wants to come here any more, a problem PJ found out.

Mick Mills - failed as a manager donkeys years ago
Harry - get real...
Billy Davies - constantly failed in play-offs, finally got Derby up, lasted 5 mins in Prem so they brought in a bigger man for the job, PJ...!
Steve Kean - no thanks
McCarthy - got Sunderland and Wolves up, couldn't keep either up, may get us up this table, but not a great option for me...
Mariner - Interesting...
Yallop - Even more interesting, but probably no intention of leaving the USA...
Curbs - Can't understand negatives against him. I wanted him after Magic, and after Keane. Took Charlton from 3rd tier to Prem, left them mid-table, they then returned to third tier. Took West Ham off the bottom of Prem against the odds, left them mid table in the Prem when Icelandic owners sold players behind his back. COULDN'T take a job when unfair dismissal case working through, which he won. I can't understand why he hasn't been snapped up. He's NEVER FAILED as a manager, I only fear Crystal Palace will get to him first...

"I'm not sure I have faith in the powers that be to make the right decision when it comes to hiring a replacement, but at least they're halfway there"

I think you've made a spelling mistake... transpose "half-wits" for "halfway" and it sounds about right!

Jewell is now history... thank God and all his little elves!

Clegg NEEDS to be history!

Wake up and smell the coffee Mr Evans... Clegg is a cancerous carbuncle on the face of our beloved club and left to his own devices, will spread his poison to the next encumbent of the Portman Road hotseat. He really is half the problem and he's still here!

What needs to happen to eradicate this pustule from the next manager's back?

If it's the golden handshake money you're worried about, don't! I'm sure the supporters would willingly club together to drum him out of OUR club!!!

Grow a spine and throw him out the door by his earhole!

'nuff said.

Harry as a Director of Football would be epic! With Matt Holland, Fabian Wilnis and Taricco as management team!

Unless Clegg follows him nothing will change. Time to learn from repeated mistakes. If not within no time you'll be calling for another managers head and claiming all too many think they know best. The state town are in will not be fixed in a few weeks. So I hope a wise choice is made and then time is given to get things right. It's not just the club that has lessons to learn but a few fans that are far too short sighted for theirs and everyone else's own good. Please old town values with Mr Evans money should have us where we all want to be. Please, this decision has to be the most crucial for many a year, if it's rushed or wrong, we don't have much further to fall!

Lots of sensible posts on here which is good, but a few of you need a lesson in respect. Correct decision at the right time, good luck in whatever you do PJ.

Jewell must hate Ipswich vs Derby at home. It is the second time that he has been the manager in this fixture and been sacked straight after it!

Draw a line and let's move on for the good of our club.
My view for the future would be Head Coach Clive Allen with Joe Jordan & Kevin Bond back room. Loads of experience under one of the fans favourites for the job. HR not going to happen so get next best thing.

Best wishes for the future PJ. Not all your fault but it had to happen. Who next??? Well, as has been previously mentioned, this is the most crucial appointment in the history of ITFC. Get it wrong and we could spend years in league 2, get it right and who knows! I don't care who the next appointment is as long as they can get our club moving in the right direction. Whoever it is will have my utmost support!

I would personally like Billy Davies with his 5 top 6 finishes including a promotion; knowledge of the Championship, Scottish grit etc. Whoever does come in though needs to appoint a defensive coach. Somebody who has played at the highest level and can really drill the back line into an inpenetrable wall. Last season Arsenal had the 7th best defence in the Prem, then Steve Bould came in during the summer and after 8 games they have the joint best defence. Could work for us???

If I was Jewell I would be fuming! Watching that DVD after the game yesterday was a waste of his time - I'd be livid.

In all seriousness though, it's never nice to hear of sackings really. Good luck Paul Jewell, very sorry it didn't work out for you.
