Town Confirm Jewell's Exit
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 13:00

Town have confirmed that manager Paul Jewell has left the club "by mutual consent".

A statement from the Blues reads: "Ipswich Town Football Club have today parted company with Paul Jewell by mutual consent.

"Jewell, who has been in charge at Portman Road since January 2011, finalised matters with club owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg this morning and all parties agreed that he should leave his post as manager."

Owner Marcus Evans added: “Since he first walked through the door here, no one has worked harder to bring success to this football club than Paul Jewell.

“Unfortunately his outstanding commitment has not been rewarded by results on the pitch and having spoken with Paul at length, we feel it’s best for him and the club if we go our separate ways.

“I’m bitterly disappointed — as is Paul — that it has not worked out as we had hoped when he became our manager 21 months ago and I would like to put on record my thanks for his services to the club and wish him every success in the future.”

Jewell himself said: “I could not have had any more support than I have done from Marcus Evans and Simon Clegg. I have enjoyed working with both of them in my time as Ipswich Town manager.

“We all know that football is a results business though and I’ve never hidden from the fact that our results have not been good enough.

“It’s been a privilege to be manager of such a fantastic football club and I want to thank the staff and the supporters for the backing they have given me in my time at the club and wish Ipswich Town the best of fortunes ahead.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg said: “I am bitterly disappointed that we have parted company with Paul, but we accept that this is in our respective best interests.

“Paul has worked tirelessly to try and deliver the levels of success on the pitch which we all aspire to but the recent results and our position in the table required us to make a change.

“The search for a new manager of this football club is well under way and I am confident that we will find the right man to get the best out of the players, both individually and collectively, and lead the team to future success.

“The immediate focus is to ensure we secure three points on Saturday and in this regards I have asked Chris Hutchings to take over as caretaker manager.”

Town have called a press conference with chief executive Simon Clegg for 3pm.

Ivorfeeling, are you bonkers:Harry for Chief Exec? We'd be broke inside a couple of months.I'd like people on here to name 3 "footballmen" who are successful Chief Executives at other clubs. The reality is that ME being a very successful businessman will keep SC as CE until he is unhappy with him.

Agree with previous comments about the running of our club,it`s time we had people in charge who understand football. We need a manager who gets the best from the Acadamy and dosen`t get journeymen looking for a last payout or lonees who don`t care about the club. Don`t normally like the Director of football position but this club needs one right now in place of Mr Clegg, someone with football knowledge,Mick Mills maybe?

Thank god! Really did feel sorry for him last night, but enough was enough. We really need to take time getting the right man in now. People that are saying Owen Coyle and Mick McCarthy...no thanks?! We really don't need another manager coming in who has just been sacked.

Sorry if its been mentioned already, but why has Hutchings and the other wally retained their jobs. Surely Klugg/Osman would have been a more appropriate stop gap. Now, we continue with the same crap tactics and lose to Sheff Wed

I'm sad it didn't work out, I really wanted PJ to succeed but it was not to be. No hard feelings against the man though (unlike for Keane), he tried but ultimately got it wrong.
Thanks for halting the slide when you came in early last year PJ but I won't be thanking you for the position you've left us in (I think he'd understand those feelings) but I will wish you good luck in what ever you end up doing.

Here's to a new start and to climb the table.

COYB!!!!!

Please god not mills, yallop, mariner, holland or any one else that once pulled on the blue. Good players yes, managers to get us out our current position never. With what we have available to us we need intelligence, tactical nous, drive, ambition and man management.

For me Billy Davies or Glenn Hoddle would be my choices although don't be surprised to see a dark horse appear.

It's a tough world PJ. Good luck as you never intended for this to happen.

I feel a little bit sorry for PJ, he did not want to be bottom of the league,I just think Itfc was not the club for him,bit like Keane, no one wants to fail sometimes it happens.Anyway upwards(not difficult) and onwards.Up the Town!

Good luck Mr Jewell. It was a nailed on certainty you would get your p45 today & in truth, this decision should have been made months ago, however, i feel as supporters, the majority have shown patience way beyond that of most other clubs. Evans, Clegg & the players now also need to take a good hard look at themselves.

Definitely the right decision as the last few weeks had been very damaging to everyone associated with the club Jewell included. He tried his hardest but it never really worked for him and his decision of the last couple of months have at times been very strange and very wrong. His reliance on older players failed and I think he was very much yesterdays man.
Evans/Clegg now have a big decision to make on who's next and what direction the club will look to go in. After 2 dud managers in a row they cannot afford a 3rd mistake. I dont envy their task. I just hope they make a long-term decision to build from youth with young hungry players the Ipswich way, even if that means a step-down in the short-term.
I feel relieved that we have a chance to get out of this nightmare now

Unlucky jewell great effort and commitment though, saved us from the keane era but never really progressed any further than mid table, thanks for trying a nice bloke and i wish him all the best! What now? start from scratch and build up a strong team and spirit wipe the slate clean, onwards and upwards COYB!

PJ worked hard from all reports and I'm sure was doing his best. At least he had the humility and sense to admit the time had come (as had ME obviously), even though he'll know he'll find it hard to get another job at this level.
With our squad (even if new man doesn't keep all these loanees) I'm sure we can still have a decent season and build for 2013-14.

I don't think PJ's effort was ever in question and to a degree his plans were hampered by a tight wage cap, but unfortunately poor team selections and a lack of tactical nous and flexibility were his downfall.

Good luck and all the best in the future.
