McCarthy: He's Not JET Yet
Monday, 26th Nov 2012 13:52

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says he’ll know Jay Emmanuel-Thomas by his given name until he does enough to earn the sobriquet JET. The new Town manager says the 21-year-old has “terrific ability” and can be “anything he wants to be”.

“I’ve told him, he’s Jay Emmanuel-Thomas to me. I’ll call him JET when he looks like he’s got a rocket up his backside! Until then it’ll be Jay to me,” quipped McCarthy.

“He could be anything he wants to be,” he added. “He’s got terrific ability and I need it out of him.”

“[It has to come from him], we can help, of course, without a doubt. We quite fancy him up the pitch at centre forward.

“He’s 6ft 3, he’s a big, powerful guy, he can run at people. It’s getting him to go in the box and [knowing] what to do in the box to get a goal. Terry’s working with him and he’ll be getting more of that this morning.”

The Blues boss says the former Arsenal academy man would give him another option up front if he shows his worth as a striker: “If he does, he’s still not going to be like Tyrone Barnett, or Daryl Murphy for that matter.

“If we get him to do those things, we’ll have a real player, someone that backed in, that won headers and did all the hard yards. He’s technically very, very good, but he’s got to get other stuff into his game.”

Mick's no mug is he. I love this manager. He says it how it is and commands respect by doing the job the right way and is in no way swayed by egotistical prima donas that so many professional footballers appear to be these days.

Im really looking for ward to seeing "The Team that Mick Builds" .

His nickname should be JETLAG at mo.
He seems to suffer from it after the first 10 seconds of every match

I'm quite liking the idea of using the materials we have available and bringing out different aspects of our players to fill the required positions on the pitch.

JET (or should I say, Emmanuel-Thomas) does have the ability to run at the opposition and miraculously maneuver his way through with the ball. He does have a long-range shot on him, too. The coaches just need to work on him getting the ball into the net more regularly and he could be an outstanding striker.

I'm guessing McCarthy didn't actually use the word "soubriquet" himself? :)

No doubt about it, JET can be a match winner - a lot like dos santos- but he can also be very frustrating. If MM, but in particular TC can work on his skills and make him a decent striker, we all will be happy. I think the problem is that up to now he has been a winger, a striker and played just behind the striker role, with no-one at the club knowing his best position. Please don't mess him about at the club, stick with him as a striker and work on that!

Always thought Jay should play up top. MM seems to have a commonsense approach and to see the obvious, where others perhaps have not. If he's up there for a whole match, surely something is bound to happen!?

More good words from JET. On his day he is brilliant; but when he's poor - he's terrible!!

I just wonder if he's playing up front, will we (albeit not deliberately) use him as a target man? We all love to see him running with the ball, and we might end up having him too far forward so he doesn't have enough room to actually go anywhere. He'll get the ball at his feet with his back to goal and not have any room to turn. I fell like we should play him as a striker, but just dropped back a bit 'in the hole' kind of like a Wayne Rooney role.

From what I've seen of him this season I would be inclined to use the name
Jet Lag.

how many players have we had that play out of position.i have written on previous posts about liam trotter, jamie peters, daryl murphy, carlos edwards etc...the mantra with our game seems to be if your fast your going on the wing,if your big and strong you play center back.and if you can tackle a bit and pass your playing midfield.you have to set your team up to complement your players in their best positions no matter how tall short fat or thin. at international level i can see why this happens, but with the size of our squad we should with the number of midfielders and strikers we have this should not be a problem for us.going back to jamie peters, he could have been a latter day eric gates(with pace) for us running around up front but ended up as right back and midfield!?!. i hate the fact that we are still experimenting at this time which is always seen as the key part of any season and dont know our best 11.i really cant see us looking the part until late january early febuary.we can all have a whine at jet but a lot of posts i have read a good portion of fans think he would do a lot better in and around the strikers position.i say give him a shot but also play in a way that will play to our key players strengths.

Love the photo: "Don't look at him, or you'll turn to stone!"

Jaime Peters the latter day Eric Gates? Don't make me laugh. Bournemouth and Leyton Orient didn't want him either. How some people on here think he's a great player is beyond me. The only manager who ever rated him was Roy Keane, and he really knew how to manage didn't he?

What a waist of money Jay is and who honestly cares if Chopra is broke he only has himelf to blame and if heather Swann is looking for sympathy she should look elsewhere as he is a disgrace to this club

JET will be a top signing if we find his best position and he has the desire to be the best he can be- MM/TC could turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to him.

That's sobriquet (without the 'u' I'm pretty sure) and JET's not that anyway. JET's an acronym, being derived from the initials of his full name, whereas a sobriquet would be a nickname - like Big Apple for New York. Here endeth the lesson...

JET is an acronym and a sobriquet (spelt with or without the "u" - either is acceptable).

adamisablue added 01:34 - Nov 27
