Hewitt Aiming to Push On
Thursday, 30th May 2013 16:11

Right-back Elliott Hewitt says he’s hoping to get a good pre-season under his belt this summer and then push on during the new season proper. The Wales U21 international missed all of last year’s pre-season having undergone two hip impingement operations while still with Macclesfield.

Hewitt, who celebrates his 19th birthday today having joined the Blues on a contract until 2015 on his 18th, told the club site: “I obviously missed all pre-season last year because of the injuries and I didn’t think I would play much.

“It was a bonus to get in the first team and play as much as I did and I was really pleased with the way things went.

“It was a big step up for me and I’m still adjusting to it but I’m looking to get a good pre-season under my belt this time and really push on from there.”

Having made his Blues debut as a late sub in the 3-0 home victory over Millwall in December, Hewitt has now made three starts and five appearances from the bench.

Think maybe it's time we gave him the chance at RB - assuming we're not bringing back Stearman?

He's got a great future ahead of him I'm sure- Jewell may have made some mistakes but he unearthed a couple of young gems in Hewitt and Cresswell

I payed this on the other article but here it is again:
On the subject of another keeper, gosport boroughs Nathan ashmore is attracting interest from Pompey Bournemouth and Walsall. The club has just been promoted to conference south and they are not asking for a lot of money for him. I watch this team every week and he is a supers keeper. Great going forward, needs work defensively so he'll need to work on this in pre-season to make a MM starting 11 on the back of last seasons defensive reorganization.

murraybrunning - too right. Jewell has made some decent signings (unlike Keane). Its a shame the bigger signings he made didn't work hard enough or come off for him: Chopra, JET, Taylor. Ellington, Bullard...
They're the reason he failed in my opinion, well, to a large degree anyway.

Played excellent every time i've seen him play so i say if you're good enough you're old enough. Just hope he has a better run without getting injured. Would still make Stearman number 1 summer target though.

Happy Birthday young man. Look forward to you becoming a great right back at Ipswich. MM will help you mature. Agree with above posts, jewell made some good signings.

He has a good attacking game which is what the modern game is about
A good buy and hopefully he will be able to push on and make the right back spot his own

If we do manage to sign Stearman (massively important signing imo, was instrumental in us tightening up our defence towards the end of the season) why not give Hewitt a go at right midfield? We're desperate for a young pacey winger who can deliver a cross, isn't that essentially what we have in Hewitt?

@Londonben

This idea is definitely one I agree with. It's well documented that MM likes to play with pacey wingers, and Hewitt's crossing and pace puts him in this category. Also he could learn much from Edwards, who could act as a mentor this season.

Additionally, Hewitt appears to be a switched on young lad with the right attitude, who if asked to work on a new position would give it the time and attention to do it well.

I would give him the No2 shirt and make him first choice right back, looks a class act to me. Why buy Stearman it will only hold Elliott back.
George Burley was a regular at 17 and I think this boy will be as good as George. If we have money to spend I would rather see MM buy a class midfield player.

He's 19 now, and as he is so highly-rated I would hope that he would be good enough for the first team now his injury is behind him.

The trouble is, if we sign a permanent right-back that player would stand in Hewitt's way, whereas if Elliott comes into the side and does well he could be worth multi-millions if a Premier League club comes in for him now they have their collosal TV deal. We have to develop youth to take us forwards on the pitch and to bring in additional income through sales.

Our major problem with Hewitt, will be hanging onto him. Id put money on it as soon as he gets a run on the side PL clubs will come sniffing round . I seriously doubt we will hang on to Cresswell or Hewitt. That's the penalty of being an "established" 2nd tier Club.

However I really hope we get see Cressie and Hewitt marauding down the wings a lot this coming season.

@londonblue - I'm in favour of trying that too but don't forget, there's bags of competition for that place: Edwards, Taylor, Carson and JET.

Retroblue i agree... But hopefully next season we will be heading for the prem and cresser n hewitt will stick with us. Also agree with comments about hewitt down the wing.. He really has potential in that area.. He's also pretty damn good at throw ins as well. COYB

Keaneish,

what competition ? Jet will be gone if we can unload him Carson is going on Loan Taylor is going inside & Edwards is going for his bus pass, all that's needed is for MM to have the courage to play him out wide,........ assuming we get Stearman..

@keanish - just an observation, you say in one post that Keane never made any good signings and that JET and Taylor were failures for Jewell (although Taylor got a serious injury in his very early days) then in the next post you say that right wing has lots of competition in Edwards (signed by Keane) Taylor and JET. Slightly contradictory I think.

Anyone heard Cresswell in talks with Villa ?

Keaneish added 19:35 - May 30
Not really - they're in the squad so they're direct competition. Whether they step up the plate or not is a different question.

Dont agree about chucki g him in. A double hip operation and still only 19. He needs to be nurtured and tutored. Handful of games and lots coming ofthe bench then great player for 2014/15

right back is a position which is easier when your younger
as u get older those runs back after getting forward get harder and harder
tell him he is gonna be number 1 right back and throw him in there
if ur good enough ur old enough

I really like the look of this boy, when I have seen snippets of him he looks like he has got the lot, crosses a fantastic ball.

If he keeps progressing he can go right to the very top.

If they are good enough they are old enough most good players are getting regular games at nineteen.

Kilgallon deal a real possibility at the moment but if it goes through unsure as to how our defence is going to be lined up next season.

You can see already that MM's emphasis will be on defence above all. The big clubs won't come in for Hewitt till they're sure that his hip problem has been sorted. Even so, he needs cover in case he is injured . Creative midfielders are still required though. Even Chopra will look good if we have a midfielder who can slide a ball through to him. I don't know about you lot but I'm getting anxious already.

I think that Hewitt (like Cresswell) has the potential to be a very good player indeed.

That said he has an injury record and we need cover across the back four.

That means re-signing Stearman who can play both RB and CB. Without him I don't know where we are if we get injuries.
