Henderson Close to Loan Return
Saturday, 15th Jun 2013 22:30

TWTD understands that Town are close to completing the re-signing of West Ham keeper Stephen Henderson on a season-long loan.

Henderson spent two spells with the Blues during 2012/13, initially between October and January when he made 16 appearances before returning later that month and playing eight games prior to being recalled by the Hammers after their young keeper Raphael Spiegel suffered a finger injury.

With West Ham recently having signed Spanish keeper Adrian on a free transfer from Real Betis as competition for last season's first choice Jussi Jaaskelainen, Henderson’s opportunities at Upton Park would be limited during the campaign ahead.

The 25-year-old is contracted to the Hammers until the summer of 2015, having joined from Portsmouth, initially on loan, in March 2012.

Town had previously shown interest in signing Henderson on a permanent basis during the January transfer window.

Dubliner Henderson started his career in English football with Bristol City, during which time he spent spells on loan at York City, Weymouth, Aldershot and Yeovil.

Having released Arran Lee-Barrett and Jason Brown at the end of the season, the Blues look set to bring in two new keepers with out-of-contract Tranmere man Owain Fon Williams understood to have been offered terms.

Good news I think but would he still be subject to sudden recall by West Ham at any point during the season?

That's Loach on the bench then!

Not sure how he will take that.

Did well for us, be nice if he was our player rather than a loan. good competition for Loach and big Mick clearly rates him highly. In Mick we trust!

i'd rather we either signed him up, or played loach. i think henderson is better than loach, but loachy is a through-and-through tractor boy, who would do anythign to play in an ipswich shirt. but i trust mick!

Aye, the loan aspect is a bit of a dampener. But what this does provide is continuity - our defence was getting along well with Hendo.

Just bloody sign him permanently. He's never gonna play at wet sham now they have 2 keepers ahead of him. Yes if they get an injury then he'll be recalled as a bench warmer, but he's never gonna be their no 1.

I guess it's not up to him though.

Glad to have him back but feel a tad sorry for Loach who will be feeling blue on hearing this.

Why not swap him for JET or chopra. Or both?

Taylor15- I probably love the club as much as Scott Loach but I still think Henderson is better off in goal than me

I'm loving this! Loachy is grt and want him to do really well for us but Henderson is quality and once he settled he won us a lot of points! One on ones Id back him and very calm and self assured. Love to sign him permanently.

Would Fon Williams settle for 3rd choice? Three very capable keepers.

A typical McCarthy squad slowly taking shape, got the experience and fight with the likes of Jay Tabb and Daryl Murphy, players you expect to be 7/10 minimum every match.

Just need a bit of pace and flare to compliment that really.

He might as well of just joined us in the first place.

Can't see Williams being happy with being 3rd choice..Mick obviously doesn't have complete faith in Loach.
Would prefer to have our own players than countless loanees - they don't work in the long run..please let's not go down that route again.

Don't mind if he's not on 24 hour recall again! A loan I approve of, although does this indicate that we rely on the sale of JET and chopra for any transfer budget? I hope not

Would rather stick with Loach.

Good and bad. Good keeper, really looked assured toward the end of last season, happy he's back.

Here are the problems:

- he's on loan. Are we putting a loan keeper ahead of loach and maybe Williams? What message does that send out...again?
- Williams has been offered terms. What terms? 3rd choice? Pushing for second choice?
- what does Loach think about this and where does this leave him? On the bench? 3rd choice? Starting but under immense pressure not to mess up?

Competition's great and I'm happy Henderson is back all be it, it should be on a perm deal but I don't really get the dynamics of these three. If we had 2 of them and an experienced keeper coming toward the end of his career or a young up and coming keeper then that would make more sense. It'll be interesting to watch to see how this pans out if both keeper deals go through.

I'm sorry but loan signings shouldn't be happening in mid June! The only way this would be good is if there's no stupid 24 hour recall but i fear there will be.

Quality keeper. As long as its a season long without a recall then it's a great move for us.

I wonder if this is a season long loan with a view to a permanant deal at the end ?

Presumably he didn't join before because of the wages, so if this is a loan - to - buy the outcome financially will be interesting to say the least.

Loach might be this so called 'Ipswich through and through' but if we are going to do anything next season he is not good enough IMHO

Henderson was doing great when he was recalled

This is the best 'signing' we could have hoped for this summer. He is the best keeper we have had for ages. I am assuming there is no recall. Phil can you clarify?
