McCarthy Not in Hunt for Another Left Midfielder
Saturday, 28th Sep 2013 06:02

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he currently has no plans to re-sign his former Wolves left winger Stephen Hunt, who, as TWTD revealed on Wednesday, has been training at Playford Road this week. However, he doesn’t entirely rule out the possibility of adding the 32-year-old to his squad should he be required.

Hunt, released by Wolves following their relegation to League One, gave his old manager a call after a proposed move to Blackpool broke down.

“Hunty was great for me at Wolves and asked if he could come down and train and I said yes,” McCarthy said. “He adds a little bit to training, he’s a great personality, infectious and he works hard.

“He’s just hoping that something will turn up for him. But it’s not here, I don’t need a wide left player, I’ve got Jay Tabb, I’ve got Ryan Tunnicliffe, who’s playing well, and I’ve got Anthony Wordsworth, who hasn’t even featured yet this season.

“So, it’s not a position I’m looking for, but if that changed, then there’s a player like him of his ability that’s not getting a game anywhere. It’s bonkers this year.”

Tabb, Tunnicliffe & Wordsworth are what Mick sees as our wide left players & therefore we don't need Hunt. This makes no sense to me as he is a completely different option to 3 central players who have been used out of position. Anderson is the only true winger who has played left side, after that you could argue that Cresswell would be decent there, but other than that there is no width in attacking the byline on that side.
Don't get me wrong, Tunnicliffe has been a great signing, Tabb was excellent last season & has plently to offer while Wordsworth has been criminally underused so far, but none of them are left wingers. I'd like to sign him, play him & move Tunnicliffe in alongside Skuse. I feel we would gain in both areas.

Can't say I'm a fan of Hunt, but none of those players Mick mentions are 'left midfielders'.

I agree, we have zero wide left players at the club, we've just got a few central midfielders who can do a job there. Would be a great addition, but there seems very little capacity to add anyone at this stage. Maybe in Jan.

If our current wide left men are as ill-suited as some seem to be suggesting, how come the majoity of our best attacks been going wide down the left?

MM clearly has no idea what he's talking about; he talks about players as if he sees them train everyday and talks to them and all that. Sack him and get some of the News posters on TWTD - they clearly know a lot more about how to build teams and how to set them up on matchday. And I'm sure they all have better CV's than MM.

Hmmm!

I think the wings are where we are really lacking in quality/creativity. Anderson looks like he works hard but with no real quality and Tunnicliffe and Tabb are central midfielders playing left wing. I haven't seen us with decent wingers since Ambrose/Currie.
