Derby Striker Linked
Wednesday, 4th Dec 2013 18:55

Town boss Mick McCarthy is considering a January move for Derby striker Conor Sammon, according to a report in Ireland.

The Irish Independent claims the Blues and last night’s opponents Blackburn are amongst a number of Championship clubs eyeing the 27-year-old, who is currently out of the Rams’ starting XI.

The Dubliner played youth football with local side Cherry Orchard, then moved on to UCD, Derry City, Kilmarnock and then Wigan before joining Derby for £1.2 million in the summer of 2012, signing a four-year contract.

Since then Sammon, who has won nine full Ireland caps, has made 47 starts and 17 sub appearances, scoring 12 goals.

Another senior striker wouldn't appear to be top of Town’s January wish-list as things stand at present with David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy McCarthy’s first choice front two and Frank Nouble and Paul Taylor also regularly in the 18.

Youngster Jack Marriott is currently on loan with Woking, while veteran Alan Lee signed non-contract terms in the summer.

Meanwhile, Blackburn frontman Jordan Rhodes says his goal celebration during last night’s match wasn’t aimed at the Town support: “I got a little bit of stick from the fans which I probably brought on myself,” he told the EADT.

“But I enjoyed that goal for personal and family reasons, not to wind up the crowd. I’m still an Ipswich fan, I’m one of them.”

Rhodes, who departed the Blues reluctantly in the summer of 2009 having been sold to Huddersfield by ex-boss Roy Keane for a fee which eventually reached just over £1 million, added: “I grew up supporting this club and I always wanted to run out there at 3pm and put on the shirt, but it wasn’t to be.”

Not sure about Sammon, rather see Marriott given a proper chance or buying Rhodes back, looking forward to going further up the table! COYB!

Mmm ch of a Murphy-ypeplayer. A RB and a playmaker are the more pressing priorities.

All paper talk (I hope)

I'm nervous about this idea as well. Derby fans have been consistent in their view of him every time we have played them. He is a great striker at disrupting defenders and getting inside their heads, but he is just not a finisher.

If he joined, I reckon that there would be ten page threads about him over here within a few weeks.

No, play Marriott

As for Rhodes, bit of a silly boy last night with his reaction.

We all need to move on from him, an for that matter the recurring requests for Stearman.

Another physical Mick style player. Give Marriott a try out when he gets back (at least as a sub).

Roy only signs Irish players....let's hope Mick doesn't sign this guy, given his poor scoring record.

Sammon would not be high on my list of signings I must say. Hopefully he also isn't high on Micks! But if he does join I will support him, would prefer a pacy wideman & a cheeky contract offer for Hunt

I would like us to sign Wolves B. Bergman Sigurdarson. He wants away and leading the chase for his signature is former wolves manager and current FC Copenhagen boss Solbakken. I rate him above many of our current attacking players, he has strenght and flair. Anyone? Mick! Terry! Phil1 !?

More likely ebanks-blake coming in than sammon I reckon, needs creativity in midfield and a bit more pace imo

I'd leap at the chance to sign him

Conor Sammon is one of the worst strikers i have ever laid eyes on. He is no better than any of the strikers we have. This better not be true

Do we even need him?

If you're on here mate, which you will be if you're a fan, you're welcome back any day - you'll have to take a cut in wages, a small price to pay for playing for the club you support ;)

Anyone saying we should get Rhodes back is being slightly unrealistic, do you really think we could afford the transfer fee?
Sammon isn't really what we need, he's hardly prolific. We have other forwards in the shape of Murphy, Nouble and Lee (if he gets a game) who can do better and more importantly are more likely to put the ball in the net. If we must have another stirker then it should be one who is capable of scoring, someone like Ebanks-Blake because if we're ever faced with a period of time without McGoldrick we will lose out on a few goals, not to mention his ability to play the ball in an almost play-maker fashion as well.

Weird story. Why would he leave Derby for us, doubt we could offer what they would want and for the player it is a sideways step at best.

Would have looted to have seen Wickham come to us instead of Wednesday if we were on the hunt for a striker but Mick isn't doing much wrong so happy with his judgement.

Unless he wants rid of Murphy I'm not sure of the point? Marriot to come back. Spend the money elsewhere.

Buying him would not be the result of the 'Sammon' of wisdom swimming up the Orwell.
Newspaper/agent story.

Spoke to a Derby Season Ticket holder this morning, his assessment "works really hard, doesn't score enough, if there's a fee involved I'd take it" - Enough said really.
