Town Target Garvan Return
Wednesday, 5th Feb 2014 12:28

TWTD understands that Town are looking to sign former Blue Owen Garvan on loan from Crystal Palace. Boss Mick McCarthy wants to add another midfielder to his squad to replace loanee Ryan Tunnicliffe, who joined Fulham from parent club Manchester United on the final day of the transfer window.

Garvan, 26, has not been included in the Eagles’ 25-man squad for remainder of the season, also having been omitted during the first half of the campaign.

The Dubliner came through the academy at Town - he was a member of the 2005 FA Youth Cup-winning squad - before making his debut in August 2005.

After making 134 starts and 40 sub appearances, scoring 15 goals, he moved on to Palace in the summer of 2010 during George Burley’s spell in charge at Selhurst Park.

Contracted until 2015, the Irishman has made 71 starts and 15 sub appearances for the Eagles, scoring 11 goals, but has played only three games this season, all in the opening month of the campaign.

Town boss McCarthy hoped to add to his midfield options before last Friday’s deadline but pulled out of a deal to sign a player believed to be Leeds United’s Paul Green having been unable to come to an agreement regarding wages.

Speaking after the Bolton game, the Town manager said he would look at the emergency loan market when it opens on Saturday, expecting other players to become available with clubs having made additions during the transfer window. Football League clubs can sign loanees for up to 93 days.

A fortnight ago, http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/24461/mccarthy-watches-palaces-u21s>TWTD reported that McCarthy was spotted watching a Palace U21 side including Garvan beat Bristol City 2-0.

what is the point of signing someone who hasn't played all season, has a slight knee problem? Hardly going to be match fit. (see: SEB )

Many comments about Garvan's lack of pace. I don't think it's essential as a playmaker. Having an eye for a good pass and the ability to deliver it is enough. Magilton wasn't quick but he could pick a good ball.

Yes please............the lad can pass, can hold the ball and I bet McGoldrick would get even more chances, bearing in mind he's got 15 goals, living off scraps with very few balls threaded into his feet around the opposition penalty area.

The kind of player that would get Paul Taylor noticed as well.........please do it MM!

I'd be surprised if Mick brought him in as his injury prone at the minute with a knee problem plus Mick tends to keep things very quiet as we all know so doubt this is going to happen some how

No I still don't believe this. It is so wrong on so many levels

Glad we didn't get Green who I believe is also over 30.

Better to have a Premiership reject than a Championship one;but this is only a rumour.

BTW have just watched Marriots goal on here kindly suppied by Phil in a eleven and a half minute clip, and the clarity of sound and vision was far better than Ipswich Player which is crap at the moment. Also noticed ball on ground for virtually whole time.

Worrying article from the mail early this season

Midfielder Owen Garvan would have been in Crystal Palace's 25-man Premier League squad had he shown a better attitude, according to manager Ian Holloway.
Having featured in the first three matches of the season, the 25-year-old was the most surprising omission from a Palace squad bolstered by a flurry of late transfer activity.

It was a decision Garvan did not take well and led him to take a thinly-veiled swipe at Holloway on Twitter, posting: 'I'll be here longer then he will...trust me'.

It goes on. I have herd mutterings of an attitude problem before but I dont know if its true. Anyone else?

I said about Anderson's brilliant assist for Murphy's goal (Reading), I haven't seen a better through-ball since Garvan left. Bring him back!

Hope he comes to PR. Do you remember when Arsenal were reported to be putting together a £6Mn bid for him in 2006 or 07? Where has it gone wrong for him? Our man Mr Keane hardly encouraged him, I think. Look forward to him playing for us & resurrecting his career.

If he's good enough for George Burley, he's good enough for me! But is he fit? If yes, I'd welcome him back.

We should never of got rid of Garvan. He does lack pace but his footballing brain certainly makes up for it. If I was one of the forwards I would at least know I would be getting decent service form a man who knows how to pass a ball.
Good luck Owen. Is football coming back to Portman Road ?

Deffo have him back.

He has a touch of class and quality about him, and can provide a defence splitting pass.

Him and skuse in the mid would be excellant.

I would rather see one of our current youngsters being given a run in the first team than one of our old ones. Garvey, try 4-3-1-2 and

Gerken
Hewitt Chambers Smith Creswell
Skuse Hyam Tabb
Wordsworth
McGoldrick Murphy

No-one needs to be signed at all!

Sorry but I seem in the minority here but Garvan had developed an attitude problem when at Ipswich. He is not the messiah you are all making him out to be, otherwise he would have a great future in the Premier league at the age he is. Garvan is another player who has not played regularly and if signed would not possibly be fit to go straight into the team. I agree he is a bit different to what we have but is he good enough, quick enough for what we want now? Personally I do not believe he is.

NoelTheDub added 17:34 - Feb 5
This would slightly improve us as a team because his eye for a forward pass, based on that I agree with most on here.If there is a fitness problem as there always it with our signings we dont need it.What annoys me most is letting these guys like garven ,trotter, go and play their best football elsewhere and then look for them back to help us.

Garvan is certainly a creative player who can score goals, but equally he apparently has a troublesome knee injury. Also, not a fan of players or managers returning to old clubs. Never seem to be so good second time round - as we have seen in the past with the likes of Scowcroft and Dyer. However, Garvan is exactly the type of player we need and will no doubt give his all.

TractorBoy666 added 17:56 - Feb 5
He always reminded me of Gerrard when we had him (not the same quality obviously) but the way he played such great balls across the pitch and also the way he strikes the ball, also looking like him! Wouldn't mind this one bit and possibly better than Tunnicliffe, but then again I haven't seen him play in a while. Lets hope he's still got it!

chorltonskylineblue added 18:16 - Feb 5
I always thought he was a class player when he was with us. Not the fastest, true, but he showed great vision and passing. Magilton was slow too, but similar vision.

As the late Luis Aragones said to his Spain team just before they went on to conquer Europe and the World - you're no the fastest lads, but you don't need to be. The ball moves faster than the players and you're able to pass it the fastest (or words to that effect).

boysinblue added 18:20 - Feb 5
Ah yes, I remember him having a brilliant eye for that killer pass. Exactly the sort of creative minded player we want. YES PLEASE
