Town Target Garvan Return
Wednesday, 5th Feb 2014 12:28

TWTD understands that Town are looking to sign former Blue Owen Garvan on loan from Crystal Palace. Boss Mick McCarthy wants to add another midfielder to his squad to replace loanee Ryan Tunnicliffe, who joined Fulham from parent club Manchester United on the final day of the transfer window.

Garvan, 26, has not been included in the Eagles’ 25-man squad for remainder of the season, also having been omitted during the first half of the campaign.

The Dubliner came through the academy at Town - he was a member of the 2005 FA Youth Cup-winning squad - before making his debut in August 2005.

After making 134 starts and 40 sub appearances, scoring 15 goals, he moved on to Palace in the summer of 2010 during George Burley’s spell in charge at Selhurst Park.

Contracted until 2015, the Irishman has made 71 starts and 15 sub appearances for the Eagles, scoring 11 goals, but has played only three games this season, all in the opening month of the campaign.

Town boss McCarthy hoped to add to his midfield options before last Friday’s deadline but pulled out of a deal to sign a player believed to be Leeds United’s Paul Green having been unable to come to an agreement regarding wages.

Speaking after the Bolton game, the Town manager said he would look at the emergency loan market when it opens on Saturday, expecting other players to become available with clubs having made additions during the transfer window. Football League clubs can sign loanees for up to 93 days.

A fortnight ago, http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/24461/mccarthy-watches-palaces-u21s>TWTD reported that McCarthy was spotted watching a Palace U21 side including Garvan beat Bristol City 2-0.

Great passer, but didn't he have an attitude problem? Or was that just Keane?

Done well for us in his first spell, but he struggled under keane, who like mick, wanted 11 grafters in the team and didn't particularly like flair players. He is slow and too lightweight. I agree with blueandtrue82 and would go for dorrans like a flash. Owen is a bit more like wordsworth and isn't like skuse to be fair

Would be a great addition. Good at retaining possession (greatly improved since he left). He improved alot since he left and was a driving force for Palaces push for promotion last season. Scored a few goals and increases our threat from set pieces.

At this stage we need numbers for midfield and Garvan is proven at the level. He is also experienced at pressures associated with playoffs, as said earlier he came up through our ranks!

I'm just happy to see that everyone else on here supports this move! I seem to recall Garvan getting booed alot just because he was a bit slow. England's not the most hospitable place for a touch player. I said to my mate the other day the Garvan is just the kind of player we need, delighted this might be a goer...

Owen Garvan was a good player for us...not at all like Skuse. In fact not like anyone we currently have...could hit forty yard passes with accuracy and will come and fetch the ball off the back four Magilton style....no pace but if you protect him with Skuse and Hyam in a 433 he'd be great....

Like the sound of this!

I would be delighted if this came off. Would give us something that we're currently lacking in terms of a passing midfielder. Mick seems to be trying to address the shortcomings in the squad despite not having a massive transfer budget. Good signs I would suggest.

Please no. He's slow, can only pass sideways and apparently he's got a dodgy knee as well. There must be better options out there surely!

Can't see this happening, more likely another link with a former Ipswich/Wolves/Sunderland player who isn't in their first team currently. Wouldn't have thought he was MM's type of player, he can pass but doesn't track back, doesn't get involved enough and doesn't tackle much. He was good at times and proved that at times at Palace, but too often the game would pass him by particularly if he was up against a tough midfield opposition who would bully him out of the game within the opening 15 minutes. Get him in as cover at most but he hasn't played for so long he's likely to be a long way off the pace.

Based on his normal speed Owen Garven is expected to arrive in Ipswich in time for next preseason

Too much like skuse? I would have said nothing like skuse! Is not a holding midfielder is more of a creative player with an eye for a pass, was missed when he left.. Got a goal in him too. Does look lazy as lacks pace, however if this lad had pace he wouldn't be struggling to get into a premiership side he would be first choice!

one thing garvan has got what alot of our midfielders lack is that defence splitting pass and the vision to carry it off, we have a lot of huff and puff in our central midfield but no one skuse included seems to put in that attacking pass, you dont need to run around like a headless chicken to do it, so if we do get him he would defo be worth a bash

To be fair to Owen he was always tipped as a candidate for towns player of the season by the press. I think Keane was keen to offer contaracts to every out of contarct irishman he could, Garvan of course already had a contarc and i think that concept blew Keans mind and thus resulted in a managerial meltdown of epic proportions.

Like everone else I would take him over Green

Very intelligent signing if we get him. Creative spark that we're lacking, experienced at this level yet still at a good, hungry age. Also, an extra body to bulster our small squad.

I cannot see anything negative about this signing at all.

You blues.

I agree with those of you saying dorrans would be a better option but think youll find hes in albions 25 man squad(he played sunday), so cant see him going out on loan. don't think garvans fitness would be a prob as I think hes been playing for their under21 team wich plays in premier reserve league. just not sure if he good enough nemore. he certainly wasn't last couple of times we played against him. but would still welcome him back and if it happens lets hope he does the business for us

i would say he's so similar to wordsworth it's like watching brothers from a different mother.both can play that defence splitting pass, both stand there preening thereselves afterwards, both are slow to the point of almost stuck in reverse, and both have a goal in them, but are they micks kind of player??..i think we all no the answer to that !!..

Garv added 14:25 - Feb 5
Yes please! Should never have been sold, especially for such a pathetic amount.

Will mean you'll have to stop bypassing the midfield with long balls though Mick!

Whilehe would add to the team, was never anything special. Dorrans is better shout and uch more the type of player we need. Garvan seems just a left-footed Skuse to me (and i rate Skuse highly)

Skuse he is not - totally different type player
He was very good at Palace and quite afew fans of theres I know were gutted when he was not in the 25
It is a big YES from here
Dorrans is too expensive and Trotter has just joined Bolton !

I think OG would flurrish under MM as he wont be bullied like he was under keane's regime.

Maybe we get back Supps as well

Good vision and passer of the ball, but I wouldn't have thought he was MM type of player. Drifts in and out of the game.

RK should never have sold him. RK should never have set foot in our club. Enough said.
