McCarthy and Connor Sign New Deals
Monday, 30th Jun 2014 11:26

Town boss Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor have agreed new three-year deals with the club. The pair’s existing contracts were due to end next summer.

“I’m delighted,” said the Blues manager, whose terms now stretch to June 2017. “I’m looking forward to it and I’m looking forward to the new season, forget the new contract. We’ll be here for another three years, hopefully!

“Progress has been made and I want to continue making progress. I know the players have all come back. They trained on Friday, they had fitness testing and they were all better than last year, so I think they’re looking forward to it and we want another good season.”

He says he’s happy at Town having avoided relegation after taking over with the club bottom of the table during 2012/13 and then leading the Blues to ninth last term.

“It was an easy decision to make, I love it here,” he added. “I’ve enjoyed it, we’ve made progress since coming in in 2012, November 1st. Gradual progress has been made and I’m looking forward to making greater strides this season with me and TC and the rest of the lads.

“There’s a good feel about the place, I enjoy working with Marcus, he leaves me alone to get on with it and manage the club and pick the team, I get no interference from him, so I’m hoping for another good season.”

We're in safe hands for the forseeable future.

All I ask for Mick is a little more flair going forward.

Not only is this the first manager ME has given a new contract to, it's also the longest contract. All other contracts have been for 2 seasons plus the rest of the season during which the manger is hired

Done a pretty decent job so far, but you have to ask yourself.....with no money for players, how are they going to produce anything more than we saw last season?

A side of loan players will only take you so far.

Great news to tie down both Mick and TC on new contracts. Shows there is trust in them and a long term vision. I just hope we can develop a more exciting brand of football and a more positive mentality when we take the lead.

Interesting reaction from posters so far. Glad to see mostly positive comments though.

I still don't fully understand the fair play rules (or whatever they're called.)

I have to agree with Spivvy Chops. Can't we risk ME spending 3 or 4 million just to bolster the present team just enough to make the play offs? What sort of fines would be involved?

The other thing I am glad to see is we were going for academy status 1 although I've not heard anything about this for a while. Did we get it,or are we still going through the process?

The news that MM and TC have signed new 3 year contracts is excellent!! Lets see who else they can sign during close season. COYB!!

Brilliant news. It's true that money is tight, which is why it is so important to have a manager like McCarthy who has the knowledge, contacts and judgement to spend the limited money we have wisely on free transfers. Players respect Mick and Terry, and want to play for them and that is very important when it comes to attracting new players and getting the best out of the existing squad.

This is fantastic news.

It sends out a clear message to prospective new players that the management
team are fully committed and signed up. I should imagine this point is a factor in most player contract negotiations, so it really is brilliant news from that prospective too. A good start to the week!

£3-4m just to make the play-offs and possibly not succeed? Far too risky.

Good move IMO. Stability is key.

Not a massive fan of MMs tactics all the time but absolutely delighted the club has backed the manager so fully and looking at the bigger picture and the longer project , think this could be crucial . Still believe there may be money made available were just not informing all agents like we have done in previous years which pushes up fees and wages

Arnie, I think the problem is the penalties for a breach are just unknown. case in appoint if your a mega rich club apparently you can negotiate with fifa or uefea or whoever and come an agreement on a punishment (city, psg) until the situation is clearer I think its prudent to stick to the rules. Once we see some of this dished out and the effect it has then we can make a more informed choice. I think the whole system is a mess but none the less its there.

RE MM
Despite taking over a side who were bottom of the Sky Bet Championship and winless in 12 matches, McCarthy guided them to 14th that season, eight points off the play-off positions.

The 55-year-old continued that improvement last season as Ipswich finished ninth in the table, just four points off the play-offs.

Excellent news. Top signing of the Summer. Also, in an age where owners interfere with transfers, team selection etc, how refreshing that ME stays out of team business. Lets now hope that Mick gets the correct financial backing this summer, assuming Cresswell moves on!

Good news for me too. I too have reservations about the style of play, but I am sure MM and TC are well aware of this. The key going forward for me will not be an extra £3-4m people keep going on about. The 2 keys are the Academy and the quality of output - this needs to improve. The other is signings such as Veseli, Mings, Doherty, Henshall. If MM can dig out a couple of nuggets this way as well as through the academy then we will fly. That is the club's history and in the financial climate the way we must revert to. MM has a good scouting network so I am willing to be patient while the club is moving slowly forward (as has been the case over the last year).
