Wordsworth Available as Ambrose Joins in Training
Thursday, 21st Aug 2014 14:06

Town boss Mick McCarthy has made midfielder Anthony Wordsworth available for loan or permanent move. Meanwhile, ex-Blue Darren Ambrose is training back at Playford Road.

McCarthy told the club site: “I have spoken to Woody and he’s available now to go out on loan or to join a club permanently. He needs to be out there playing games.”

Wordsworth joined Town from Colchester in January 2013 but has never established himself as a regular in the side, making only 10 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring twice.

The 25-year-old was close to a loan move to Preston North End midway through last season.

McCarthy says free agent Ambrose, who was released by Birmingham at the end of last season following a loan spell with Greek side Apollon Smyrni, is simply training with the squad at present.

“It’s not a trial or anything like that,” he said. “It’s just like Jack Collison, who is also with us.

“Darren asked if he can train with us. We’re happy to let him do that but it’s no more than that.”

Ambrose, who moved to West Suffolk earlier in the summer, played for Colchester against the Blues in pre-season.

The 30-year-old came through the Town academy and made his senior debut at Arsenal close to the end of the Blues' 2001/02 Premier League campaign.

After establishing himself in the Town side after relegation he was sold less than a year later to Newcastle for £1 million as the club sought to raise cash having gone into administration.

The Harlow-born midfielder subsequently moved to Charlton before rejoining the Blues for two months on loan during the 2008/09 season but failed to win a permanent deal.

A spell with Crystal Palace followed before he joined Birmingham in July 2012.

Elsewhere, former Blues striker Michael Chopra has joined the Kerala Blasters in the new Indian Super League, a club owned by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed that they have received an offer from Premier League Hull City for another ex-Town striker, Jordan Rhodes.

Well he was never a starter so no real surprise - I feel before we can bring new players in we have to offload another out !?
If it is Collison then ok - still need another one in CM

Shame this, as I think he's a better attacking passer than anyone else we have at the club. Skuse seems to only go sideways or backwards and Hyam isn't a passing midfielder, he's a ball winner. Plus he also gets stuck in which is surely a trait MM appreciates and he likes to get forward and attack. He's got the same amount of goals as Skuse and Hyam combined despite playing about 80 less games and most of those were as sub. Can only assume that he needed to free up some wages (not that he can be on that much) in order to bring in a replacement (Collinson?).

i thought Ambrose looked the best player in the first half in the Colchester match...... worth a punt i think

Disappointed with the decision to let Wordsworth go. Yes he isn't a first team regular, but he is our only CM who adds a different dimension when he does play. He's our only slightly creative outlet in the middle of the park.

Although you can safely assume this means Collison is joining, I still feel we need another Central Midfielder. If the well documented rumours about Collisons injury troubles come in fruition, it leaves us very short. Especially as I feel that Skuse is woefully out of form and needs replacing, whether just until he regains some sort of form or permanently.

I would suggest more movement in the transfer window is imminent. Hopefully, Collison with join, and be supplemented with a more forward thinking Premier League loan.

We won't have any players left at this rate

Skuse is no where near 'out of form' he made one mistake against Birmingham and now he needs dropping? No. Agreed we need a more creative thinking midfielder but dropping Skuse because of one error is not the way around it.

Another player who i feel has never been given a fair chance to establish himself in the team and when did play looked like a forward thinking midfielder maybe that's the problem.

why wasn't this al sorted out pre season? we are now relying on people who have been told they can leave the club. MM must be confident because he hasn't got his squad together 2 days before the important home fixture. why have pre season if players just turn up with their kit and play?

I'm not sure Woody is the man to push us to the next level. Game time is certainly what he needs but its not going to happen at Portman Road. However the bigger picture surely indicates that MM has a player or two who'll be signing imminently. Not sure Collison or Ambrose are the answers though! Watch this space for a couple of young guns from the Premiership who don't make the registration of 25 for their clubs....

Have always thought that MM was a good choice for manager and that he had the credentials to get us out of the division, but I am now starting to get worried by his decisions it seems that any spark of creativity is being pushed out of the team to make way for hard working willing runners. Looking at the first few games of the season it is blatantly obvious that we need a creative spark in midfield. Surely with the team we have we can afford to have one luxury player who has the ability to change the game with one contribution. Not any MM but some of his decisions re the players are starting to get the alarm bells ringing for the way that we play in the future.

Woody seems a good guy but he's not good enough.

Let's all move on

Obviously Mick has plans. So that's 2 players that MM actually signed who are up for transfer, Woody & Nouble!

Jonny Williams ?

For me the worrying thing is he has now made 2 of his own signings available for transfer or loan and so has deemed them surplus requirements. He signed them, so if they not good enough now, were they good enough then?? He does have his hands tied though, what with FFP, we will only find out whether its been worth following if teams are punished

Agree with the Messiah, he's not the guy to take us into the premier league so let's not lose sleep over it. Although do think it's a shame he didn't get more chances. I would really like Nick Powell to come in on loan from Man Utd, he scored goals for Wigan last year. I have faith that MM already has plans regarding a replacement, hopefully an extra body as well as collisson because, as mentioned above, he has been susceptible to injuries so far in his career.

Blatantly letting Woody go because collison is gonna be signed! Maybe Tabb to go for ambrose to possibly come in. Even tho Tabby has been playing well!

Nouble, Lawarnce and Wordsworth both available for transfer - if I was a manger of a L1 or L2 Team I would take a punt on all three. Offer them first team football and you'll probably get them

Agreed Wordsworth like Taylor has never been given enough games to prove his worth, as mentioned many times before on this site unless it's work work work with defensive qualities thrown in Mick won't like you as a midfielder - I wonder how many games he's started compared to Tabb or Nouble?.

Have to say these players going out on loan or being offered to leave permanently so soon at the beginning of the season (not pre-season) and players needed to come in just gives the feel of poor management.

Len_Brennan added 15:30 - Aug 21
I wouldn't condemn Mick for letting players go yet, before seeing who he is bringing in & trying to make room for & money available for. Clearly there are at least 2 more players coming in, not necessarily Collison & Ambrose.
I am getting more confident of Jonny Williams coming back by the day; hope that's not just wishful thinking.

Seems as though Mick is now saying to players you either commit to this club mind and body or you can go elsewhere. It's about time.
