McCarthy: Taylor Never Showed Enough at Town
Friday, 5th Sep 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says Blues striker Paul Taylor never showed the type of form which is winning him rave reviews at loan club Rotherham United while with Town. The 26-year-old joined the South Yorkshire side three weeks ago and has impressed in his four games for the Millers.

Following their recent 1-0 win at Millwall, in which Taylor created the winning goal, Rotherham boss Steve Evans told their official site: “He’s been terrific every day I’ve seen him, he was at Peterborough, which is why he went for £1.5 million to Ipswich Town.”

He added: “Paul’s a player we’ve always liked and we convinced him to come here and he was excellent [at Millwall].”

McCarthy says he’s aware that Taylor has his fans but says the summer of 2012 signing from Posh didn’t show that sort of form when in his Town side.

“He’s there until January sometime,” McCarthy said. “I know there are a lot of people who have got a really good feel for Paul Taylor, there’s nothing I can do about that.

“I haven’t seen it in my team, whenever he’s played, whether he’s started or gone on as a sub. If I had I wouldn’t have let him go.

“Maybe however he’s playing at Rotherham suits him. I think he played wide on the left against Millwall.

“I don’t know how many glowing reports he’s getting but good luck to him because he’s still our player when all’s said and done.”

Taylor is joined at the New York Stadium by fellow loanee Anthony Wordsworth, while ex-Blues loan duo Paul Green and Frazer Richardson joined the Millers in the summer, as did keeper Scott Loach after settling his contract at Portman Road.

The Liverpudlian, who scored only one goal in nine starts and 16 sub appearances for the Blues and is yet to net for the Millers, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Rave reviews, but still doesn't find the net....we don't need another striker who can't score, we've got a plethora of those......never rated Taylor, but would still prefer him to Sammon, who offers precisely nothing.

Bit of spin by Mick I think. If he hasn't been shelved and ultimately shipped off for attitude and off field antics, then I'm a budgie!

Four games no goals one assist.
Hardly setting the world alight???

I dont pretend to know the rights and wrongs of this and at the end of the day only MM and Taylor really know what has happened between them.

Having said that given MM hardly ever used Taylor, and even when he played well he was immediately dropped for the next game, I think MM should probably just keep quiet about the whole matter now rather than trying to come up with what look like increasingly weak excuses to justify his decision!

Not gonna use this issue as a stick to beat mick with, because he has got the majority of things right and is generally doing a great job with what he's got. But Taylor and wordsworth he has got wrong in my opinion. Taylor has shown that kind of form when playing for you mick and has deserved the same amount of chances that "Big Frank" who you often described as outstanding, even though he couldnt score in a knocking shop!! When taylor has played really well Mick has begrudgingly admitted as much and then dropped him for the next game. This is where micks stubborn side comes into play he def has talent and ud think that if he is playing well then we'd recall him, but no chance sadly

Sick and tired of mick slating players in the media, if my boss did this to me he'd be sacked. Wish mm would admit Taylor and him just don't get on and be done with it.

In the first three games he played for us (including the one he was injured in) I thought he was brilliant, of course Mick never saw those games, he is an exciting and very talented player, Mick I like you generally speaking, I recognise and appreciate your proven qualities, however you are totally wrong about Paul Taylor, you deliberately never gave the boy a fair chance, be a man and admit then I will have total respect for you, bring him back and play him in a suitable position, he has a great deal to offer our club if you will give him a PROPER AND FAIR chance, he may not be a prolific goal scorer but his assists can be accurate and superb and we could certainly do with some of that, this is my opinion and I have expressed it several times on this forum, I know that some of you have differing views.

During pre-season Mick came out and said that Paul Taylot come back 4th fittest in the whole squad and has obviously worked hard over the summer(which he was very pleased about). After a few pre-season games where Taylor looked bright and creative in the majority, he is then frozen out AGAIN.

The fact is, he doesn't fit into our squad because of our style of play. Isn't that depressing? He's shining at Rotheram because they like to play the ball on the ground to feet(and not just playing the ball backwards).

Currently IMO our team is crying out for some "bums off seats players". IF we could manage to get Williams, our team could become a very attacking force in the championship come January. Wouldn't ever expect MM to have anything like this but the sad thing is, this team is doable...

Bialkowski

Chambers Smith Berra Mings/Parr

Hyam

Hewitt/Stewart Williams Taylor

Mcgoldrick Murphy

If you could get the wingers Taylor and possibly Hewitt to safe it up a bit with chambers to be up and down, this team has 3/4 players that could get a goal from nowhere, when was the last time a town fan said that??

afcfee - I am absolutely serious that we should be looking to build a team around Taylor. He is a footballer with a bit of talent unlike several others currently at our club. He excites the fans and annoys the opposition and on the few occasions I have seen him puts in a good display. He may very well be a pain in the ar$3 and a bad boy off the pitch but a quality manager can manage these individuals - see Cantona at MUFC, see Suarez at LFC.
MM is to old to change and too arrogant to try. Yes he saved ITFC from relegation when he arrived but he is not capable of getting us promoted and totally incapable of getting his players to entertain the fans. We are and will remain a Hoof Ball team for the foreseeable future under MM

To use your infantile language McCarthy that is a bonkers judgement from a pig headed stubborn man.

Football is all about opinions. When MM took charge we were adrfit at the foot of table having spent a fortune on the likes of Chopra, Bullard, Bowyer, Rio Joker etc.... on wages. We had plenty of ability (some proven) but had a dressing room that didn't give a toss (Hutchinson's comments after 0-3 Sheff Wed). Drastic surgery required and achieved by removing bad apples. Taylor is a good player but at what cost to the team spirit? Lots of rumours of tantrums etc.... Would Fergie take it? Ask Ruud & Jap Stam.

It's a personality clash, nothing more nothing less.

Just because he runs around like a headless chicken people think he's better than messi! He always fails to play that "final" ball, either deciding not to pass it to a team mate or running it out of play! I don't doubt he has some skill but mm wants players committed to the team and the club, not just someone who only looks out for themselves which is what I see Paul Taylor doing EVERYTIME I've watched him play.

In Mick you trust!?
If he said that he didn't want people in the club who get convictions for GBH, fine, can't disagree with that. But not a decent footballer?! Not better than some of the crowd he has kept?!
Goes a long way to explaining what is wrong with the football at ITFC.

Who knows what goes on behind closed doors. MM seems to really value team spirit and the team getting on well and wanting to play for each other. I guess that's why Hunt got the contract (mind you an expensive occasional sub/clown).

Possibly the talent didn't weigh up against the fact that the dressing room didn't like him.

But what do any of us know what goes on behind closed doors.

The truth will out about PT I for one am glad this guy is not around ,when and if he reforms which I hope he does I wish him good luck and good riddance to waste your talent is a tragedy ,but when you sign for a manager you adapt to his ways he's responsible for your wages so let's see some loyalty commitment from you if not why did you sign .Money lots of it p/bro took a massive chance on him after his ban from football what did he do ,jumped at the money and flew away. Then sulked because he could,nt get in the team no place for him in a our club thank goodness well done mick

A bit of perspective peeps. He's playing well AT ROTHERHAM!
Its not like he's gone to Arsenal or Liverpool and has turned into an essential element of their team. AND its only a couple of games he's played. Maybe at the end of the season MM will be proved wrong, who knows yet?
He showed glimpses of talent here, but with no end product (i.e. goals) and its obvious he wasn't pulling his weight at training either. Managers call. No biggie.

Sometimes Mick you talk utter tripe! He has never been given a proper go since you have been manager, and I dont mean one half here, 20 minutes there, I mean a proper go. He has pace something we are crying out for, he may not score many goals but he will create space for others that I have no doubt, So tell me what has Tabby and big Frank done and Skusey that is so amazing. Face dont fit does it! Jobs for mates

Utter rubbish and quite bizarre from McCarthy. Taylor was always a cut above when he came on as a sub, it just so happens that he was always introduced with about ten minutes to go and asked to turn the game around all by himself.

So what about the Blackpool game, the QPR game, Birmingham? Was Mick never impressed with these performances?

I don't think this is just a Taylor point although my opinion is that he was never given a run in the team to show consistency or get settled with other players game style , which was allowed to other players time and time again after poor performances .
Any manager that picks players like Tabb , Tunnicliffe and Nouble above players like Edwards, JET, Taylor , Wordy is setting up for one game plan only , that is the style MM has chosen and his judgement , he will be successful or fail simple as . The fact that we may have done better with other players in is hypothetical as we will never know , you can only judge by how players do elsewhere . It says something that Taylor is still in the championship playing as is Edwards where as Nouble has dropped down a league to get a game so we can compare him to how JET has done ?
But to those saying how MM had to clear out all of Jewells rubbish , his most successful period as Ipswich manager came with the team he inherited not the team he has put together

funny how this fantastic player , when given a chance against the world beaters of crawley could not manage a decent pass all night , very selective the posters on here and while theyre at it, feel free to press the minus button , infact I would prefer it if you did.

Fans have short memories. If it wasn't for MM then Town would be playing League One football. Players like Taylor and JET are frustrating for managers, brilliant one game and anonymous for the next three. Some fans view the so called "flair" players performances through rose tinted glasses. It's the expectation of what they can be rather than the reality of what they actually are. You judge a player on performances, you have got to do it on the training ground/pitch. If Taylor and JET were so brilliant then how come bigger clubs didn't come in for them? JET had a good season, but he's still playing in League One isn't he?
