Chambers Signs New Deal
Friday, 17th Oct 2014 13:16

Town skipper Luke Chambers has signed a new contract until the summer of 2017 with an option for a further season. Yesterday, the 29-year-old revealed that he was in talks with the Blues regarding new terms.

“I’m absolutely loving my football right now and I couldn’t be happier at Ipswich,” Chambers told the club site having put pen to paper.

“I’m happy here, I’m proud to be captain and, most importantly, I want to play for Mick McCarthy.”

Loving life under big Mick, talks of contract extension only yesterday, and signed today, no pissing about for months wondering will he, won't he.

Great news. Amazing to think that it was just 2 years ago when Paul Jewell was in his last week as manager, the club was a shambles, and looked nailed on certs for relegation. Now we have a settled strong competitive side, with expectations of play-offs at the very least. Our best players want to stay & sign new deals. What a turnaround in such a short space of time, and with virtually no transfer fees spent. MM = Marvellous Mick

Added to what Muhrensleftfoot said, how many players at that time were also coming towards the end of their contracts, without any sign of discussions being had? This is so much more positive - get deals done sooner for players we definitely want to keep.

McGoldrick next please.

Chambers has been a great signing for us; solid, dependable, experienced and someone who ddin't whinge when asked to play out of position for full season.
We are in the happy position where we have 3 of the best centre halves in the Championship (& Mings capable of playing there, with Clarke coming through also) and the current partnership of Chmaber & Berra looks very solid.
The idea that 1 of the 3 coulsd be left out of the starting XI would have been, & indeed was, regarded as madness by some just a few week ago. Even more than that, the idea that Tommy Smith, a young lad who has come through the ranks & some difficult times to establish himself as a quality Championship & international centre-half, would be the one to drop to the bench would be regarded almost as treason.
It is a testament to Chambers's ability & approach that (a) The manager trusted him to play centre half when a change to the backline was made, (b) that the fans have accepted his inclusion to the omission of one of our own, and (c) that the result have been so positive with the defence been rightly lauded during that time.

Somebody was always going to be unlucky when Mick decided to play Jonny Parr on the right. Berra has been outstanding for us and is our best defender (in my opinion) so he was never going to be the one to lose out. I'm sure it was a toss of a coin between Chambers & Smith, with Chambo's right-footedness just winning the day.
I don't really see Smith as having been dropped, as that kind of suggests a dip in performance more than the reality of a change in how we are set up. With suspensions & injuries bound to come our way, Tommy is very likely to get in the side again sooner rather than later & we are steeped to know that it will not weaken us to any great degree.
I am glad that Chambers is getting his chance in his best position now though and that he is being recognised by the fans for the effort he has put in since his arrival.

Good. Another key player tied down. And how refreshing it is to have watched Town getting this done in recent months - McGoldrick pending, of course.

I see three reasons for this:

1.) We've actually got the right staff at the club who can get the deal done.
2.) We're not going down, so there's no need to wait on what division-dependent resources we'll have next season.
3.) We might be going up, so players want to stay!
