Town Down to Seventh
Tuesday, 3rd Mar 2015 22:13

Town have dropped down to seventh following tonight’s Championship fixtures. It's the first time the Blues have been out of the top six since November.

Brentford (61 points) beat Huddersfield 4-1 at home to leap into sixth above Town (60), who face Leeds at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, new leaders Middlesbrough (66) defeated Millwall 3-0 at the Riverside, while Derby (65) dropped to second after losing 2-0 at Brighton.

Watford (65) moved up to third via a 1-0 home victory over Fulham, while Bournemouth (63) climbed to fourth having beaten eighth-placed Wolves (57) 2-1 at Dean Court. Nottingham Forest (50) in ninth lost 2-1 at Charlton.

While Town are in action at Leeds, Norwich, now fifth on 62, take on Wigan at Carrow Road.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow, there's still a long, long way to go. Just as it's been tough for us to stay in there, it's gonna be tough for the rest to keep us out.

Derby lost to Brighton. That says it all.

As much as I am grateful for MM and the job he's done, he has done his job, hes like the tony Pulis of the champ. At the end of the season I would replace him with mark warburton who had bizarrely been let go at the end of the season, the job he's done there, if he came to ipswich he would do a terrific job with better players...

Brighton have to play top 5 all at home. Let's hope they win them all.

Lon Long way to go
Given top 2 may be too much of a stretch, 9 points from the next 5 games would be a pretty good return and set us up to take our chances in April run in

If you play with an attacking instinct then you have a hell of a chance and you take it to the wire.
If you continue to play hoofball and just kick it up then you get caught out.
McCarthy's style of football has been caught out by all the opposition and we are getting our just rewards.
No doubt against Leeds, he will play with a single attacker and persist with players out of position and out of form but he won't change his way.
We had a chance to break away from early January but his one dimensional defence-ridden hoofball has to take sway.

Our way of attacking may not be subtle- but is it a defensive team that concedes as much as we have done recently from break away goals?

Draw or better tomorrow and we'll be back in the play-offs.

Why are so many having such a go at McCarthy? Having spent £10k we're 6 points off the top with a game in hand and statistically only need another 15 points from our remaining 12 matches to secure a play-off place. What the hell do people want after the past few seasons?

Hopefully we will get something against Leeds but I'm not that confident. Teams seem to have sussed us out now. This season we have had around 6 or 7 chances to take advantage of teams around us and to build a points buffer, either while sitting in the top 2 or in the Pay-Off positions and we haven't taken a single one of those chances. Meanwhile, Norwich go from being 10 points behind us to potentially being in the top 2 tomorrow night and it pains me to say it but I think they will be nailed on for automatic promotion.
To stand any chance the route-1 has to stop, especially when we play the likes of Middlesborough, Bournemouth and Wolves. It is telling that the Norwich defence were finding it easy to deal with our Route 1 style but the one great chance we had on Sunday when Sears was through against Ruddy in the first half came about not from Route 1 but from the one time that we played a slick passing game with Bru passing to Murphy on the wing who played it into the middle for Sears. And yet we didn't get the hint that it was the only way to stretch and beat Norwich's defence.

Mccarthy is a miracle worker to have this team anywhere near the top 6. We have virtually no investment in players and yet we are up there with clubs who have spent millions, because we do not win every game apparently everything would be solved by dropping Tommy smith and playing 433. It wouldn't. I think for some on here, there is a need to lose graciously and accept you can't win em all

This story strikes me as a little premature, given that we don't play until tomorrow night...

We are having a strong season. I think we will get 6th but if we don't we will be stronger next year. Fans can be so short sighted. Agree with Muccletonjoe about the fact that we have spent 110k on our entire squad and yet we are competing with teams who have spent millions. It's impossible to please some fans, I genuinely don't think any other manager we could realistically get could do a better job that McCarthy is doing with the funds available. We do have a tricky run of fixtures coming up but I think we will be in the play off mix.

Brighton made 6th place last year on 72 points

We got 68 last year so 3 win from our last 12 games and we have more points than last year

We would have all taken play off at the start of the season so 6 wins in 12 will see us there

Green_Army added 23:24 - Mar 3
17 points from our last 12 games will get us a top six place. That's five wins and two draws (from the remaining 12)...that's all we need to focus on!

Guthrum added 23:27 - Mar 3
And at least we're in the leading pack of eight, 10 points clear of 9th, 14 ahead of 10th, but within six points of automatic promotion with 36 to play for.

People should stop moaning about MM. He has done absolute wonders with what he has. No money to spent and still withing touching distsnce of top 2. Look at teams round us and how much they have spent.
Just look at the possitives and I am sure MM will get it all sorted out.
Top 6 for sure. COYB.

muccletonjoe

It would! it compensates for our lack of flair in midfield, creates balance and allows natural wing-backs to bomb forward. It worked for us before why do you think it would not work now?

Looking at our remaining fixtures, even play offs is now looking unlikely. I am afraid Evans not choosing to invest in the squad is having an effect when you compare the quality of some of the players in these top 6 teams. But if we can keep McCarthy then I am sure he will be looking to bolster the squad this summer. If it takes us 3-4 seasons to get a squad strong enough to play in the premier league then so be it. We are not strong enough at the moment, we would come straight back down.

Yes MM has worked wonders and done very well on the budget he has had. I can understand fans frustration though 1. at his hoof ball tactics which arent historically the way ITFC play, and 2. with his stubborn loyalty to favourites (skuse, tabb etc) at the expense of Parr most noteably. He isnt going anywhere though considering the job he has done (imagine the mystification form the football world were he to be sacked?!) so time to accept and get behind him and the team...
