Hewitt and Marriott Released, No Deals Yet for Anderson, Ambrose, Chaplow and Hunt Brothers
Monday, 18th May 2015 17:56

Town boss Mick McCarthy has released right-back Elliott Hewitt and striker Jack Marriott, while he says no deals are currently on offer to Paul Anderson, Darren Ambrose, Stephen and Noel Hunt and loanee Richard Chaplow but that they could still stay with the club.

“I have spoken to all the players in the squad today,” McCarthy told Ipswich Player.

“Of the ones out of contract, we have released Elliott Hewitt and I’ve told Ando, Darren Ambrose, Chappers, Stephen Hunt and Noel that we won’t be offering them anything at the moment.

“I’m going away on holiday, they are going away and I’ve told them I want to see what is around. They will be doing the same as well.

“There is an element of freshening things up. We need to go again and you need fresh faces to do that so we will see what happens with those lads.

“I have not closed the door on those players. They are great lads. We might be good for them. They might be good for us but there is nothing happening with them at the moment.”

Fulham are understood to be interested in Anderson, the Blues having failed to take up an option in the former Bristol City man's contract.

Wales U21 international Hewitt, who joined Town from Macclesfield for an initial £150,000, in the summer of 2012, has spent much of the season on loan at Colchester and could well join the U's on a permanent basis. The 20-year-old made only 10 starts and six sub appearances for the Blues.

Town have confirmed that Marriott has been released, while Anthony Wordsworth, Paul Taylor, technically still a Blues player despite having his contract settled in January, and short-term signing Paddy Kenny will also definitely be moving on, along with loanee Zeki Fryers, who goes back to Crystal Palace.

Fellow loanees Chaplow and Luke Varney, who has been offered the chance to undergo his rehab with the Blues, have been released by their parent clubs Millwall and Blackburn. McCarthy has said he'll look at offering terms to Varney once he is over the ruptured achilles injury which is set to keep him out of action for more than six months.

LIke Hewitt, Marriott spent the latter part of 2014/15 on loan at Colchester. Having come through the Town academy, the 20-year-old, who is understood to be interesting Luton, made his one start for the Blues in the Capital One Cup and came off the bench twice in the Championship.

Midfielder Jay Tabb is also out of contract but we understand that the 31-year-old is expected to stay with the club with his existing deal including an option for an extension.

real shame to see two young player go, especially as they were seen to have so much promise. But as always Mick knows a lot better than me, be interesting to see who of the others we keep. Would like to keep Ando personally, top chap imo.

Time to move on. Mick is right - we need to freshen things up. We have a good core but we should bring in a couple of new faces to keep the ones we are keeping on their toes.

I do hope we keep Ando though. I like his attitude.

Makes way for couple of midfield signings, I think we may offer N Hunt a deal, Shame about Hewitt was very excited about him playing attacking full back.

To not think about giving Ando a new contract and Tabb a new one is absolutely ludacris, don't criticise the work Tabby puts in but Ando is twice the player with the same work rate.

Yeah I agree with most of them but I thought Marriott was going to be the next Rhoads! gutted for him! Thanks to all the senior lads for your effort this season!! Let's hope we bring in some better quality and push on!! COYB!!!

Had totally forgotten about Fryers - not good enough even for the Championship at present - needs to develop.

Of the others, I think MM's right to take one or two 'tough calls'. There does need to be a little freshening up, and I can't argue with MM's judgement. Ando was immense in the playoffs, but I suppose you have to look at the bigger picture...

Let's hope there are some bargains around!

Slightly surprised about Ando, thought after these last two games he really put a case forward to stay as he seemed to epitomise a MM sort of player. However, we do need to be in the market for at least one out-and-out winger this summer.
Feel for Hewitt as well, will probably go on to be a decent player, just never got enough of a chance with us.

What a shame. These 2 young players for me have a bright future, especially Hewitt who I thought would feature for MM one day.

As for the others, let the Hunt sisters go in my opinion or keep them as back up, sign Ando certainly and get Chaplow, Varney and Ambrose on board.

ITFCFan - Marriott may yet be the next Rhodes, in that we've let him go, and he may well still come good! :)

MM can't get every decision right I suppose, but his hit rate is very very impressive.

Cam Stewart not transfer listed? Surprised MM is keeping him considering he hasn't picked him and sent him out on loan!

Shame about Marriott but I can understand why, he is unlikely to get game time with Murphy,Sears and Mcgoldrick but surprised about Hewitt especially as we have no specialist right back and he can wingback. We should keep Anderson and I would offer Ambrose a contract but let both Hunts and Chaplow go. I can also see Benyu and Hammond staking claims next season.

Some of this I find good news, however I'd rather keep hold of Ando instead of Tabb. This can only mean Mick could have some signings in line as he normally likes to do his business quite early in the window which I do prefer. Two new wingers needed, something Mick hasn't got quite right and maybe another striker even though I do like Noel Hunt. Really do feel we need a proper right back and a centre back as well as we were pretty lucky to have any injuries to our back line last season! Every team needs a freshen up to look forwards.

Not surprised that Marriott has gone. More surprised about Hewitt - assumed he'd be out on loan again.

Chaplow I can understand - was only ever a loan and despite his Watford goal, didn't think he offered much we didn't already have.

Also not surprised about the Hunt sisters. Stephen works hard but doesn't offer very much, and Noel has been injured, so perhaps hasn't had the best chance to prove himself. Plus, I can't see him shifting McG, Murph and Sears any time soon.

Most surprised about Ando, in particular when supposedly keeping Tabb. Agree with the above post that while Tabb works hard, Anderson equals that while also just being a better player. Covers every inch of grass and always comes off having put in 100% and absolutely blowing out his backside. Tabb really must have some dirt on Mick.

Plus, let's not forget THAT goal from Ando ;)

I am disappointed to see hewitt go, but hardly suprised. He isn't really any worse than the overrated Mings and hasn't done a bad job when he's played. Mick just hasn't shown the faith in him, the same way he has Mings. Hewitt was under valued in my opinion and could have played full/wing back or right midfield, where he played well against Fulham at start of the season. I'd have personally kept Ando too, not just because of the way he played in the play offs. Suprised that Stewart and Henshall haven't been transfer listed, but again they deserved more of a chance. Big changes in the summer

Yeah not unhappy with this to be honest. I don't think Marriot will be the next Rhodes, as by the time Rhodes went we all saw what an incredible player he would eventually be. Marriott though has only sporadically scored in leagues below us, no the best of indicators.

I'm trying my best to understand Mick's logic here in not offering Anderson, our best player in both play off games, over Jay Tabb, who has offered absolutely nothing to this squad but a good work rate. He's just not good enough for this level anymore. I can only imagine that Anderson's earning a fairly big wage that doesn't represent his value to the squad. I'll always trust McCarthy's judgement as he's proved us wrong many times already since taking over, but Tabb should be released without doubt. Both wings is where I'd look for new signings as we play 4-4-2 with no natural wingers.

I'm not surprised we are looking to off load all of them we need to free up money for some quality additions. Perhaps the only one which raises eyebrows is Anderson. Yet, for all we know he may have accepted a deal elsewhere. I would have kept him.

Bitterly disappointed that Tabb stays. Not good enough I am afraid. Great work rate, but need better if we are to press on. That said, the clause in his contract may have been activated by him rather than the club?

I'm expecting a good summer for signings. Loads of wages freed up plus possible cash for a big sale. Evans, it's over to you now.

Nothing surprises me with MM, his transfer record isn't that good when you look at some of his signings. Surprised about Hewitt, Marriot hasn't developed at Colchester. As far as I'm concerned Anderson, Hunt brothers, Hyam, and especially Tabb can all go don't really do much apart from run around a lot. Not good enough if we are serious about promotion next season.

unknown100 added 18:25 - May 18
As much as you love them, all these players need to go, or we will always just be a nearly team because of lack of quality, it's just more wage money, out with the old and in with the new

This must be the hardest time of the season for any manager! I think Ando is so unlucky - he has improved as the season went on! I thought Hewitt looked quite good in the few games I gave seen him play! We need to freshen things up, so we have to trust in Micks decisions!

Seriously hegansheroes? "Nothing surprises me with MM, his transfer record isn't that good when you look at some of his signings"

Stearman, Mings, re-signing Murphy against the wishes of most, Christophe Berra, Bru, Sears, David McGoldrick, Gerks, Bartman, Johnny Williams.

Agree with all these decisions apart from perhaps Anderson but lets be honest Ando did disappear during the season and was a bit part player. Only in the last few games has he come to the fore again with hard working displays. Marriott the next Rhodes that has to be a wind up and Hewitt would have made it by now as he has had long enough for goodness sake. Stewart has been kept as he has a 3 year contract (2 with an option) so he needs to make an impression next season otherwise he will be gone sooner rather than later. Jay Tabb is borderline for me so as always in MM I trust. With the wages freed up lets have a right back and some much needed pace in the side -over to you MM

floridaboy added 18:49 - May 18
You can't blame Tabb for activating a contract extension. Good luck to him I say

As for the others not that fussed if honest, even Anderson

Could be an interesting summer once MM returns from his hols

MICK - WHAT YOU PLAYING AT MAN

Ando kept us in the game at Portman Road a week ago and has a great work ethic. Maybe he goes cold occasionally but warms up again and is great squad player.

The rest - not to worried

Tabb was an automatic renewal based on his contract so stop getting your knickers in a twist. Still like Anderson, only criticism of him would be that he's a bit on the light weight side of things.

I think Mick's happy with the progress of Hammond, Clarke and the 'onnell' boys
