Murphy "Top of Cardiff Wish List"
Wednesday, 3rd Jun 2015 10:19

Welsh reports continue to link Cardiff City with a summer move for Town’s 27-goal Championship top scorer Daryl Murphy.

Claims that Bluebirds boss Russell Slade is keen to sign Murphy first surfaced a week ago and now WalesOnline reports that the Irish international is top of the Cardiff manager’s close season wish list as he looks to take the Welsh club back into the Premier League at the second attempt, having finished 11th in 2014/15.

Slade is said to have been given owner Vincent Tan’s backing to move for Murphy, who some sources elsewhere claim is also interesting Fulham, with Cardiff believing an offer of £4 million might be enough to tempt Town into parting with the former Waterford, Sunderland and Celtic striker.

However, Murphy has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of leaving Town as he and his family are settled in Suffolk, while manager Mick McCarthy and owner Marcus Evans have said they are determined to keep hold of the Blues' key players this summer.

Murphy, who is currently away with the Ireland squad, signed a new contract with Town last July, which currently has another year left to run, while the club have an option to extend it for a further season.

Hmmmm, personally I think 4m is q good for a player that age. Yes he was immense but you should be able to buy the cream of the lower leagues with that money - maybe 2 top strikers..! Yes h is unlikely to get 20+ next season...

If he's keen take the money. What we all couldn't bare is seeing top players go for peanuts/free like in the past. There aren't many town players that have gone for £4m are there?!!

Every player has his price. For me if we could get 4 million for Murphy then take it. He had a poor end to the season and there is no guarantees that he will repeat his goals from last season

As for the assumption that if he goes Bishop and Mings will follow is complete rubbish. Both are under contract and unless really stupid money is offered then it won't happen plus neither are going to set the premier league alight if they even get a game.

With us both will be regular starters therefore gaining more experience.

If Murphy moves to somewhere like Cardiff it will only be for money nothing else

I just don't understand some of the comments on here. We've been waiting for a 20+ goals a season striker for years and now people would be happy to see him go for 4 million. Whatever money we would receive we would not get a better replacement. He won't leave anyway so it doesn't matter.

Well, Cardiff is nearer to Waterford, and for Murphy it is not just a percentage of the fee but the salary package also. This could happen, what then? McGoldrick or Sears to lead the attack, or a bigger name coming in? That could upset the existing set up, Let's hope that Evans and McCarthy are preparing to deal with this first day back from their holidays. It is one thing to let every other Championship team deal away the summer and then make signings once we know how their stalls are set out but we have been rummaging through the bargain bins a quarter of an hour before closing time too often these past few seasons.

Murphy is under contract, so if he is happy in Suffolk as he has stated, and doesn't want to go, then he won't. Obviously if Cardiff offered us a few million, and also Murph say £15k per week, then I guess both ITFC and Murph would think that's a good deal, particularly considering he's now 32 years old.

Still seem to be a fair few Murphy doubters out there. The guy scored 27 goals from open play, with one of he worst midfields in the league in terms of attacking attributes, no service from wingers and with two different strike partners. The guy is a very very good player at this level and we won't replace him I can tell you that!

If the offer is a genuine £4m then that would probably be enough for the club to say to Murph that he is free to have talks.

It will depend on what they have to offer him. Murphs has said that he is settled in Suffolk but he only has a year left on his contract. There's no guarantee that he will get another and then may have to move anyway.

What if Cardiff offer him a 3 or 4 year deal. Even at the same money, that would have to be tempting.

If your looking at a price for Murph then don't forget Ross McCormack - (Top Goal scorer in the Championship the season before) sold for £11 Million after one good season.
Murph has stated on more than one occasion that he is happy and settled here (including loans he's been here 5yrs!)

Even if Murphy only scores 10 goals next season he will still be worth having in the team, or at worst bench every week without fail. We saw what happened when we were without him last season, we didn't know how to play.

Maybe in a different team he wouldn't be so important but let's face facts, we are direct, and we are quite good at being direct, and Murph is the main man in this respect.

£4m is a decent amount for a 31 yr old, but we have a better chance of promotion, so it'd seem like a backwards step for a bigger pay check.....

$4m? Murph is at his peak. Why would we sell him? It will never happen.

NSL- you hit the nail on the head about the great ability of Murf despite our midfield not being able to string two passes together - also why on earth would he want to play for Cardiff?

It's not so much about how much Murph is worth as a player, but how much it would cost us to replace him. £4M is not a bad price for a 31-year old striker, but I'm not sure we could replace his worth to us for that money.
Unless we buy another 40 Freddy Sears' of course :)

But I doubt Murph will be going anywhere.

If true, and I see no reason why it wouldn't be, it's over to the owner to convince Murphy that significant funds will be available to turn us into genuine automatic contenders next season. Cardiff will invest which will stand them in good stead. At 32 years old, Murph may not get too many more chances to play in the premier league, so who are better equipped to achieve it? Cardiff or Ipswich? With investment we are looking good. Murphy has already stated we need to bring in more quality and spend. He is right. From Christmas last season we slumped due to having a really small squad and lacking that extra quality in key areas I.e midfield. Murphy knows we need more quality as do realistic fans. The question is will Evans address the squad size and back Mick in bringing in that extra quality, which may cost a fee. Almost certainly the answer to that question will determine whether the likes of Mings, Murphy and McGoldrick will hang around next season.

cardiff with that nutty chairman ! who changed their kit colour and all the malky wrangle, reckon slade will be gone by october if they aint in top 6 be a backward step for murphy i reckon what murphy really wants is someone who can give him a decent cross corner etc!! god we miss cresswell for that

....... take this as read - If we DO NOT strengthen the squad in terms of quality and numbers, AND Murphy gets the chance to move on for a more ambitious attempt at winning things - HE WILL BE OFF.

At this stage of his career, and with the season he has just had behind him - he will want to make the most of his chances right now.

Over to you MM and ME in respect of the above - make your statement, and state your ambitions, for the forthcoming season as soon as possible WITH ACTION and NOT JUST WORDS.

The question is has Murphy had his one big season. 4 mill might be worth taking if that is the case as long as the money is re invested and does not go into the coffers of Evans PLC. There are good players to be had in the lower divisions (Sears) or how about showing some real intent by putting the money and some more to get Jordan Rhodes back
