Foley and Gerken Fit, McGoldrick Making Progress, But Bishop Could Miss Whole Season
Monday, 14th Mar 2016 13:44

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that Kevin Foley and Dean Gerken are fit again after missing Saturday’s game at Cardiff and says David McGoldrick is continuing to make good progress, but concedes that Teddy Bishop now may miss the remainder of the season.

“They’re both all right, Kevin’s trained and Gerks has trained,” McCarthy said. “Gerks was just violently ill on Friday night. Kev Foley had had a bang in the ribs, he’d got sore ribs but they both trained today and are both fine.

“Everybody else is fine. Didz has trained today. I only had two on the list from the Grim Reaper today, there was only two first-team players on that.”

Gerken will replace Michael Crowe on the bench with Foley in the running for a place in the midfield.

McCarthy says this weekend will come too soon for McGoldrick, who has been out with a hamstring injury since mid-December, but says he’ll play in the U21s next week and has been pencilled in to travel to Wolves after the international break: “He’ll play against Forest in the U21 game on Monday.”

Bishop has been out of action for the entire season with a succession of injuries, most recently a hamstring problem, and McCarthy admits that the 19-year-old may soon have to write off 2015/16.

“It’s getting that way,” he conceded. “We’ve not got that many left. He’s not going to be available before the international break and we’ve only got eight after we come back. It’s looking like a season written off.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy could add a loanee to his squad before the deadline on the fourth Thursday in March: "Possibly, if there's something around, if the right one's around."

Two of our most talented footballers been missing most/all of season
That is what still makes me question the 'Cannot find anyone better than what we have . comment
We haven't had these two so tel me we didnt need o strengthen ?
Anyway Pringle seems ok Foley better than most others - Digby and Coke etc - pass
No news on 'our' other creative player Fraser ?
I wonder if AMN will get a look in again ?
Some strange results happening at the moment so cannot see any 'gimmies' coming up as some seem to ! this is where anyone really can beat anyone
Our home form is poor so even though it is a Tuesday night at PR not expecting an easy time

Real shame about Bishop. We've really missed him pushing on from what he achieved last season.

Well,it will make the bench a little stronger.I just wonder what changes MM will make for tomorrow night. There's not much he can do really except keep the ball on the ground and go for broke, that's all there is left now I fear, sorry but True.

There has to be to this Bishop thing!! Can't honestly believe he has been out for the whole season plus a few rumours flying about. Really hope it is just a spell of bad luck and he will be back soon

Bad hamstrings? What does this mean exactly!? A whole season with bad hamstrings!? I don't get it. Even if you have really bad hamstrings that are so tight it effects your posture and your joints, surely 8 months of yoga and pilates would solve that? Weird.

Great news regarding Foley as he is one player who seems to actually want to play on the ground. Massive shame for both Didzy and Bish as they are two players who can inject some flair into our game.

He mentions he might get in a loan, but the only ones who are available to him, will be ones who can hood the ball up in the air 40 yards! What happened to getting in loans like Gio Dos Santos!!?

Hes an adolescent thats been playing in the senior league , who then got Shin Splints (Tibal fractures) that alone would be enough to rest most eleite athletes for at least 9 months. So Bishop was always going to be sidelined for a fair while.

Then he gets hamstring injruires , yet another complication of growth spurts. What makes his normal growth spurts problematic is the simple fact that he is an elite athlete whose body is changing whilst there are excessive demands being made on it , that the normal run of the mill teenager wouldnt have to cope with at this point in their life span.

Bishop , wont be rushed back. MM has always known this and so has the player, despite whatever has been printed in the media or elsewhere.

For me it's now essential that we add that creative spark to the midfield. Someone to come in and get two or three goals. We have lacked it all season. Bad news for Bishop, but I think most of us expected it. I doubt McGoldrick will play too many games either.

'Gerks was just violently ill on Friday night.'

Many years ago I frequently suffered this condition. Nasty.

Good answer on Bishop, ArnieM. Shame though, but we've seen a number of very good UK players suffer in the same way in their youth before returning stronger and fitter than ever.

Just to add to Arnie's very good answer, Bishop has had hamstring tendon issues I believe, as Mick stated a while back, which is much more concerning than a hamstring strain or pull. The recovery time and treatment is longer due to the deeper lying cause of the injury and any long term issues could be career threatening, hence the caution taken with a 19 year old.

Agree that mm must be able to find better on loan than coke and digby but if we lose tomorrow it really dosnt matter a great deal

Ive said it before ,creative players have dominant twitcher muscle fibres , hamstring issuees for `frazer , bishop and mcGoldrick Bru this season. Yet Chambers , Skuse and Hyam do not suffer with them.
I know i got slaughtered for suggesting that Frazer would be next with that injury ,but look what happened. Its our style of play and training. Those fibres cannot take the beating they get.

Glad Foley will be fit - like to see him in again with Hyam (as per Forest game) they seemed to compliment each other but this would be at the expense of Skuse. 'McG is making progress' - well we heard this at the begining of February doubt he'll be back before April and even then wouldn't surprise me if he picks up another injury thereafter.
Shame about Bish...and as others have mentioned I think the club knew all along that he might miss the whole of the season - please more creativity needed.
