McCarthy: Knudsen Has Got Better and Better
Tuesday, 26th Apr 2016 08:58

Town boss Mick McCarthy says left-back Jonas Knudsen has got better and better as the season has progressed and was delighted to see him net his first Town goal late in last week’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.

“I was delighted considering the circumstances, it was great,” he said of the Danish international. “Jonas has had a really good season.

“Jonas has been a really good signing. Considering we took £8 million in [for Tyrone Mings from AFC Bournemouth] and signed him for £300,000 [from Esbjerg Fb] that’s a pretty good deal that for me.

“He’s got better and better, he’s learning about the league, he’s a great character, a great pro.

“He has been getting closer [to a goal] and it’s been a good first season for him. He’ll get better now.

“It’s no surprise to me [that he’s done well] because of his personality. He’s a tough nut, he’s a winner, he competes like that in training. He’s great.”

Knudsen has made 42 starts for the Blues this season and was recently called into the full Danish squad for the first time since his move to England but didn't add to his two previous caps.

Been a bit hit and miss for me.

I thought he was very good at Wendy bar not looking up for Pitman who rightly rollocked him ( maybe a bit over the top but Knudsen should have put his head up ) and Brighton away again I thought he was good.

At Bristol City/ Hudds away I wasn't impressed but I don't think he's been as bad as some have stated on here.

A work in progress, but not overall a bad season.

That said, it's all well and good having a settled back 5 but Mick does need to mix them up at times. Smith's comments at being shocked to being dropped I don't like to hear.

when you sell a player for 8 million that cost just 10k and then replace them with a player worth just 300k, is it any wonder we've been languishing in this league for so long! that's about as ambitious as a jeremy kyle guest! i realise the club has large debt, and it would be unrealistic to reinvest all the money from a big transfer sale, but couldn't they reinvest just a portion of it (such as 20 or 25%). so if we sell a player for 8 million, put 6 million in to pay down the debt, and spend 2 million to improve the squad. it's like p***ing in the wind trying to get promoted with a squad bundled full of free transfers, loan players and bargain-bucket buys!

Sorry Mick but I just don't rate you, and neither did Cloughie for that matter lol!

Midas - that's all well and good but our wage bill has gone up £4 mill in the past three years ( annual wage bill ) then we have signing on fees aswell, agent fees ( grrr ) and other outgoings plus the annual £8 mill or so losses. ( loans don't come free )

He had a tentative start, the long throws haven't worked out quite as we'd hoped, but to be fair he had some pretty big boots to fill.

You could argue recently he's been probably the best player in the back four. He always applauds the fans and genuinely seems to want to do well for the team.

Hopefully his goal has given him some confidence and he can improve further next year. Well done Jonas!

i hear you currie, it's about quality rather than quantity. the squad has got too much deadwood, look at toure and so on. look at our best team ever, bobby would play virtually the same team every week. i'd rather have a smaller squad stacked full of quality, rather than waste money on squad players that turn out for 2 or 3 cup games every season and then sit on the bench for the rest. the wage bill could be saved by getting rid of some of the older deadwood like douglas and exskuse and replacing them with dozzell and younger talent. that would help. i know it's a tight situation with the finances but if anybody hadn't noticed, our owner is the top 150 of the uk rich list. surely he can afford just a bit more to allow us to sign a couple of decent players. yes keane gave him a financial hit, but he's got big enough pockets to take it IMO! him pumping in 1 million on a new player would probably be no different to me or you putting in a pound or two for the work raffle! :-)

Agreed Midas - least Stewart will be gone that's a big drain we've had.

Why Coke was offered a two year deal is beyond me, I thought we'd learned from Ellington being given a two year one. I'm never against anyone on a one year deal who could prove me wrong, but two is careless.

I think changes to the loan market will encourage clubs to use academies, which can only be a good thing.

Cheers Currie. Enjoy the banter on here. We're all passionate at the end of the day. We just desperately want to see our team do well. We might not always agree on the best way forward, but we can all see the way forward isn't likely to be with Toure or Douglas! :-)
I'm sure there is more that unites us as fans rather than divides us. Although of late (or for quite a while now in fact!) Mick has certainly proved a dividing force!
I'm just concerned that Evans seems to have lost interest. Mick should go and fight his corner and demand a certain budget for next season. That's what any ambitious manager does. Martin O'Neill did it at Norwich (I live in those dark parts unfortunately so I know more about that place than I care to!) He saw the board wasn't going to back him with the finances he felt the club needed to go forwards, so he walked and went somewhere where they would back him.
Keep up the good work Currie, I'm enjoying the comments. Much obliged.

Average championship player im affraid, not good enough for a promotion side. Caught out of position far too much and is not that great at crossing. I will leave the fact that he hoofs it down the line to much to Mick rather than him as im sure he is being told to do that.

I've heard mixed reviews Presba, but I can't really comment as I haven't seen enough of him to see for myself. I'll be the first to admit I haven't been for a while as I can't justify the cost on my budget in return for the lack of entertainment I know I'm likely to get in return. Players like Ryan Fraser make me want to dip my hand in pocket, but players like ExSkuse and Douglas, no thanks, I'm staying home and watching the Channel 4 Racing! :-)

I like "Knussen" but maybe I'm biased 'cos he's a Scandinavian. But you can't fault his attitude and commitment, which goes a long way for me. I think next season he'll kick on and become a solid player for us. You don't get into the Danish squad if there is not some quality about you. Denmark may not be world beaters but they usually put out a decent side.

midastouch, mixed reviews is fair! I have seen some good in him too, but for me mixed reviews isent good enough for promotion, maybe it is good enough for scraping playoffs but im not too sure. I agree people like Fraser do excite me along with bishop and perhaps the future dozzell but until they are either ours, fully fit or given minutes it is very very hard to watch.

Yes, he has got better and this is a good news story. Unfortunately he started so poorly he could barely get much worse. Parr was far better. Knudsen appears to have finally given up on his long but slow throws which went to the opposition 99% of the time, I cannot recall witnessing a goal arising from them. He cannot defend crosses but nor can Chambers. This is not Knudsen's fault, he is improving. It is down to the manager.

Yes,your all right,The reason our wage bill has increased is due to too many overage players coming in and taking higher wages to fund there pensions. We need to bring in young Hungary players from the lower leagues who will jump at the chance to join a big club.(Not too many)but just enough to be able to fit in with a few of the better first teamers.!!But we will still need a small amount of investment in the summer if the loan players we have decide not to stay at the club.I won't hold my breath as I'm sure there will be very little money available. We will just have to wait and see.😡

Penguinblue, you make a great point. I liked what I saw of Parr. He looked a good player but because he was played here there and everywhere, it made it hard for him to settle into a regular role. I think he could have done well for us but unfortunately he didn't seem to be one of Mick's faves. Therefore, he was always on the periphery probably growing more and more frustrated by the day!
Just like a lot of us seem to be! ;-)

For his first season in a foreign Country for him , and playing in arguably one of the toughest divisions, Id say Knudsen has been pretty good. He is getting markedly better as the season has gone on. People rave about Mings , but he was not some seasoned fantastic defender - he often made crucial errors but could recover essentially because he was so quick. I suspect we would have made a PO Wembley appearance had he not given the ball away so cheaply , ending in Berra red card. However, He's moved on and so must we. Knudsen is arguably a better DEFENDER and dosent shy away form those crunching tackle s. Yes he's still learning the game but i think he will be a top Left back for us next season.

First season?.... 6/10 and improving

Most successful teams in the current era realize that fullbacks are key roles in "transitioning" play from defense to attack. We transition by hoofing the ball......inspirational or outdated....you decide!

For those judging Knuds, who I think has had a steady and progressive season, just bear in mind that when Mings was in the side, all $8m of him, MM spent more than half the season holding him back from marauding forward. Watching a frustrated Mings constantly looking toward the bench for the nod to bomb forward last year made me sure he would not stay. He was only normally let loose when we were chasing the game and was then typically unplayable.

IN the current mindset defence rules over attack, so we need to stop judging the fullback (plural if you include Chambo) as MM has limited expectations of them anyway.

Certainly gets my vote for most improved player this season. I know that sounds like very feint praise, as there's not that many competing in that category, but even so, he's been doing very well indeed in the last few months, and as others have said now he's settled in, think we'll see even better from him next season.

Stato added 10:39 - Apr 26
Trying to be pragmatic he has represented value for money and has improved from what a less than average first half of the season. I saw his role as being cover for Parr not the other way round. When Bart and Parr should of been starting we had Gerks and Knudsen and results were disappointing.

Midas, I don't understand why you have a problem with Skuse. He does a brilliant job for the team and is missed when he isn't there. If we put four "exciting" creative players in midfield we will be overrun.

Just watched the video clip too Midas. What point are you trying to make? Why take a shot at a manger by showing a clip from his playing days 28 years ago? Cloughie was way off with his comments - "I'm glad the centre half is fit....he's not international class.......Beardsley and Linneker will be rubbing their hands."

Result? England 0 Ireland 1

Seems to work fine for Barcelona! :-)
I agree there needs to be balance. But we're way too lopsided in terms of negative hard tackling midfield players who don't play probing passes, can't beat a man, can't create something out of nothing. Skuse might be the best of a bad bunch, as given the choice he's better than Hyam and Douglas. But our midfield needs to start scoring or we'll struggle again next season. So given the choice I'd prob reluctantly hold on to Skuse in front of Hyam and Douglas, but if Evans would open the cheque book, personally I'd start our midfield again from scratch. But sadly that isn't going to happen any time soon. Skuse needs to be chipping in with more goals. He's pretty neat and tidy, but how many goals and assists has he managed this season? He doesn't affect the game that much from what I've seen of him. But then again, you've seen a lot more of him than me so you're in a better position to past judgement, as I'm not a season ticket holder, but I've still seen Ipswich a few times with him playing, and every time he's not impressed me. He's not crap, he's mediocre IMO. And mediocre isn't good enough to get promoted. I'll get hammered for saying this, and I don't care putting the cat amongst the pigeons. Wait for it, this will go down like a lead balloon but I'd rather have JET back than ExSkuse!
Ask yourself, can ExSkuse do any of this?

You'll see more excitement in this one video than you'll see from ExSkuse for the rest of his career. Look ExSkuse up on YouTube, there's very little to be found because his work flies under the radar, because it's pretty mediocre and not worth posting for anybody else to see. The one long shot he scored was a cracker mind you, but you'll probably have to wait about another year to see another one!

On his day JET is a match winner. Remember how he pulled apart West Ham! Yes he's frustrating and his form can be very inconsistent. But I prefer unpredictable talented players who can produce unexpected magic. It was crazy to let him go for free and swap him for ExSkuse. Does anybody honestly think that Luke Varney or a Connor Sammon can do better than this?

JET?? Are you serious. MK Dons sub who could never get a game.

I have watched Knudsen play every appearence this season. He was lost and unfit at the start but has grown throughout the season. It is a bit unrealistic to expect someone to come in from another country with different ethos to become effective straight away. Some of his touches have been wonderful over the last few games and those are the things you look for in a players progression. When you become comfortable in your new surroundings you relax a little and this allows you to play a natural game. Will he get better in the future.. we have to wait and see. But for me a great buy.
