McCarthy: No Clamour for My Services
Saturday, 14th May 2016 10:42

Town boss Mick McCarthy says there’s no clamour for his services from clubs elsewhere, despite recent links with the vacant job at Aston Villa.

McCarthy, 57, admits that he doesn’t expect to be in the frame for bigger jobs where there is plenty of money to spend.

“I’d love to be known because I’ve won the Premier League," said McCarthy, who was speaking at a press conference yesterday, where he was announced as Paddy Power’s Euro 2016 ambassador, contributing columns to the Paddy Power Blog throughout Euro 2016.

“I doubt that’s going to happen but I am good at what I do, I know what the gig is. If there are not huge funds there to spend, and we’ve been staying inside that Financial Fair Play, then I accept that. I don’t get frustrated by it. I try and make the best of it.

“I am used to doing it this way. If ever a job comes up that people think requires that sort of person, then that’s what I get named for.

“I’ve not yet been named where there’s been a Qatari billionaire and somebody says, ‘Mick McCarthy would be great for that job’.

“I’m living in hope rather than expectation. I’d like to be as good as I possibly can be, of course.

“I’m also very loyal to what I’ve signed. I’ve not got an agent putting my name for this job and the next job. I abide by the rules.

“I’ve had a pretty good managerial career. I’ve just about finished in the top six so I’ve been one of the top 26 managers out of 92 in the English League for the last 24 years. With Ireland we went from, what, 39th to 13th in the world was it?

“I’m proud of that and am not always wanting to chase something. If anyone wants to speak to me or make an offer, they have to contact [Town owner] Marcus [Evans] and he would have to tell me and would I like to speak to them.

“As yet, I’ve not had any call saying that Everton, Aston Villa or anybody else have been in touch.

“I don’t anticipate they will actually. I don’t think there’s a clamour for my services, if I have to be honest.”

Regarding his relationship with owner Evans, he added: “Marcus, who I get on great with, has trusted me to run his club and leaves me to run his club.

“We had bids for David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy but Marcus turned them down. I think that was a great level of support for me – not signing loads of players but keeping your best ones and if you have to improve the contracts, then that’s what we did.”

And that pretty much sums up the club, the manager and the season....

7th in the league and 6th last season, pretty good I'd say. But I am sure this story will be met with its usual negativity.

There is no doubting McCarthy has done exceptionally well in terms of results with the limited funding he had been given, often even finishing ahead of teams with Premier League parachute money. The disappointing run of results and poor quality of football towards the end of the season affected many of us, but let's be positive again and get behind Mick. 7th was not a bad finish (second highest for about ten years?) and we won our last two games to give us a positive end to the season, plus from nowhere we now have several youngsters starting matches. This should mean we use the young players to fill the squad numbers, meaning any money in the summer can be focused totally on bringing in quality NOT quantity.

Mick has done an excellent job, despite limited to no financial backing. As he says, there is no huge funds here and has had to make do. We are following FFP, one of only a handful of clubs in the world.

Is it me or is he parading himself for the market for other clubs?

Sorry but the budget isn't the reason the ball gets blasted by defenders straight up to a combative number 9 with little passing through midfield. Most clubs want more money and we need to accept our financial constraints but we don't have to accept the dross dished up at Portman Road.

I log on each day hoping there is a clamour for his services.
I think he does parade himself but unfortunately no takers.
You have to give him credit he has become very rich through just hoofing a ball both as a player and manager.

Please come in for him someone - or Milne/Evans review the season and decide the game deserves some entertainment.
Otherwise regardless of injuries, signings, departures, investment or not, it will be hoofball with his favourites again next season which ultimately will take us nowhere.

Totally agree with BossMan,i have always said that it wouldn't make a difference having a decent budget with
the style of football and tactics MM employs

I think Mark just about hit the nail on the head. Regardless of what camp you lie in, ie Mick
In or out camp he isn't going anywhere so I'll be fully behind him come the start of the season. Money and budget this window has to go on quality to booster the first 11 and as Mark illudes with promising youngsters coming thru hopefully we won't see the type of signings such as Coke/Toure again this summer. Should we start in the same manner as we finished the season thou I think the brown stuff will certainly hit the fan but I think Mick is well aware of this and knows he hasn't much time to get right this time around.

More money for McCarthy would mean better hoofballers and nothing else. I would rather finish lower down the table playing nice football than finishing 7th playing hoofball rubbish. No people didnt moan when we finished in the play-offs but i dont think people were overjoyed by the football either, i know i wasnt, people will just about put up with the style if it produces results.

The fact McCarthy "runs our club" pretty much sums up the lack of "football people" at our club.. Handing so much power to our current manager is a very blinkered and dangerous way to run a football club...

No clamour for your services ?? SHAME. I will drive you to anyone who is stupid enough to emplo you. As for not accepting bids for players, there is not one person who would say we were right to turn down £5m for that cart horse Murphy. He is useless and we wudnt get 5p for him now. Shocking business decision. As for Didz he is easily our most skilful player but £11m should have been accepted.

On the other hand the money would have gone in Evans' pocket and not spent on the squad so would have been pointless anyway.

With our no fee transfer policy, an owner who uses the club as a tax break, a dinosaur manager with no clue, a playing style as entertaining as cold sick and a squad of dross workmanlike journeymen we have no hope of promotion. Big changes necessary but very very unlikely 😂😂😂

Prebbs007 _ that was a good rant.
You make me sound like a moderate

I don't understand what MM's supporters see in him other than a short term hoof out of trouble
If he were successful in hoofing Town to promotion (he won"t be), the first thing you would have to do is get rid of him and his favourites as they could not even start a game in the premiership

Ipswichtown4life.Just what I was thinking when I read the above. He certainly doesn't lack confidence in his own ability;but is realistic enough to assume he wouldn't be head hunted for a top job.

However, just as previously, if Martin O'neal were to go after the Euros, which is possible, then McCarthy has made it pretty clear that he would want the job.

Must admit that although I wouldn't shed a tear, were he to depart,he hasn't done that badly in terms of league position here.Attitude to fans and entertainment value though leaves a bit to be desired.

Also the Owners track record doesn't inspire me when it comes to choice of managers;so we shall just have to take what is decided by the powers that be,as after all we have no influence anyway.

Another season were we have over performed, how we have ended up in 7th place baffles me, injuries aside we have not got the depth of squad needed to reach the playoffs.
I think this season has seen the championship at its weakest in terms of opposition.
This division was here for the taking, we have lost out on a major chance of promotion through poor tactics and lack of investment.
By putting players into the side and playing them out of position, by not being able to see what virtually every fan can see that the type of player we are crying out for.
By not having the faith to put young players in who havebeen signed or have come through the academy and give them the opportunity to gain the expieriance that they need, so as to be able to build a side if the money is not there to buy shows that MM does not have what it takes to get us out of this division.
If you dont let them play how do you know what their capabilities are, and if thats the case what's the point of having an academy.
Quite fed up hearing that players want to and have to play out of position to get into a first team slot, play to our strength's.
Is MM frightened to sign players, he must have seen something in the way Cameron Stewart was playing to offer a three year deal, is it just because he can't train the MM way that he's been frozen out like a few others that could be mentioned.
Hope to god I'm wrong but looks to me that it's going to be another season of hum drum performances next season.
But who knows with a squad that that can steer clar of injuries, we may knick a top six finish.

If I were Marcus Evans I would be concerned by how often he reads out his CV to the press of late.

Cameron Stewart seems to epitomise all that is wrong with the modern footballer....clearly a lot of talent at an early age, then money turned his head from the path he could have had....not sure MM froze him out, more like he clearly didn't attain the levels he was supposed to....hence being out at Doncaster and up for sale with no route back to Town...blame Mick for some things but the mass hysteria of chucking everything at his door is a tad errant
